Ploërmel, Gates of Brocéliande
This former city of the Dukes of Brittany, at the entrance to the ancient forest of Brocéliande, reveals a charming town centre and a very big lake. It is an ideal place to stay for those who like outdoor activities and water sports.
Ploërmel, former city of the Dukes of Brittany, still has the traces of its prestigious past in the town centre. Apart from the remains of the fortifications, you can admire the narrow streets lined with fine residences such as the Marmousets House (1586) and the old Dukes of Brittany Hostel (1150) in the "Rue Beaumanoir", the Bigarré House (16th C), in the "Rue des Francs Bourgeois, or the "Cloître des Carmes" (13th C monastery) as well as the pretty little blue chapel of Sainte-Marie des Carmes (19th C). The latter houses two works by the artist Valérie Rauchbach, as well as exhibitions from 15th June to 15th September (Tel: 33 (0) 2.97.74.02.70). The St. Armel church of both flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance (15th C) styles, has a splendid Northern portal. Inside you will not the beauty of the stained-glass windows, among which the Tree of Jesse (1552), and the tombs of the Dukes, Jean II and Jean III.
The Jean-Marie de Lammenais Museum recalls the life of the Freres de Lammenais congregation founder. In the courtyard, there is a very beautiful atomic clock (1850-1855), with altogether 10 faces, it is listed as a historical monument. The gallery grave of the Ville-Bouquet is concealed in an attractive country site at the confluence of the Ninian and the Yvel.
The "Lac au Duc" (duke's lake) is the ideal place to enjoy water sports. It is one of the biggest, 250 ha (618 acres), natural lakes in Brittany. You can go walking, sailing, and fishing. Its environment is the perfect place for countless outdoor activities and it is very relaxing here. At the sailing centre you can go on catamarans, go canoeing and water skiing (Tel: 33(0)2.97.74.14.51). There is a 4 hour (16 km/10 mile) walk around the lake, leaving from the Hôtel Roi Arthur (King Arthur) car park.
