I was a teenager when Hank Aaron broke Ruth's record and that was a true accomplishment - Aaron's swing was beautiful, powerful, and an amazing thing to behold. I've always felt grateful that I got to see him play, along with Joe Torre (as Braves catcher, not anyones manager), Ralph 'Roadrunner' Garr, Phil Neikro (the Knuckleball King!), Red's phenom Johnny Bench, Oriole's Brooks Robinson (remember how he could get airborne sideways if a line drive even thought about going past his post at 3rd base!), oh and a host of others...
So back to topic, to me Hank Aaron's accomplishment of more homeruns than anyone in baseball was a genuine achievement, one to be admired and acknowledged and held in high respect. But Mr. Bonds, well its just not the same. The last I heard was that Bonds has always said he never took steroids knowingly... knowingly? What?? Did somebody slip one into his drink? Does he actually not know what he ingested - did he have a shady trainer who actually did give him something illegal?
If it can be proved that he never took steroids or any artificial stuff, then I'll hold him in as high regard as I do the honorable Mr. Aaron. But until then, the record Mr. Bonds holds is tainted.
