That is good to hear - I mean that is what we think too as you listen to Highlander Radio you can hear a lot of music that is just not available or perhaps is in a format that makes it difficult to listen continuously.

We will keep Celtic Radio running and we hope to have the new site up later this year which will compliment, but not replace CelticRadio.net.

Thanks Shadows!

Just COLD COLD COLD. Looking forward to the spring when I can at least walk around the yard and to some outdoor stuff. I think the pandemic makes it worse as we really don't want to interact with too many people until we get the vaccine. Hopefully later this year things will start to come back to normal.

Glad you won that CD and appreciate your feedback. We have been trying to focus on having one really good CD a month rather than alot of CDs - more focusing on quality than quantity so hope you like the format.

Hoping for March to have the Guinness Brother's CD up if they can get it to us in time. We should have their new CD up on the broadcast very soon.

Thanks for the great feedback! I have to agree that Celtic Christmas has a very nice sound and of course Celtic Moon is our most popular broadcast three times more than Highlander Radio.

We recently made some changes to the Highlander Radio playlist. While we have a huge library of songs and audio files (59,243), we noticed that a lot of the early songs were not rotating from the early days of 2004. So we examined the reason and found out why and made some fixes. So you might have notice some songs that you have not heard in a while or perhaps never. I really enjoyed an old track of "In the Shade of the Ol Apple Tree" by Donie Carroll.

Shadows - good observation. Next year we will be sure to enable Christmas requests. Our current "A Celtic Christmas" channel is not hosted on our servers so we are unable to perform live online requests on that channel.

I guess a follow up question to explore - with the advent of all of the new streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music - is there still a place for Celtic Radio? Some of the Celtic music playlists on Spotify have alot of listening hours, but I noticed too they may not have the depth of the music we have since it spans such a long time.

First, a Big Congrats to the following member who won our January CD in our monthly CD Contest:

Tom from MA wins the Whisper Valley and Other Stories CD.

For February we are featuring 1 brand new CD donated by The Pikeys for the Sons of War & Whiskey CD - The Pikeys are the Premier West Coast Irish Punk Band. Co-created by NorCal’s 90’s Punk Scene products Ben and Mike. Their thundering Power Punk Core of guitar (Mike), bass (Glenn), vocals (Ben) and drums (Hennessey) is completely complimented by the addition of fiddle (Erik) and banjo (Buji). The Pikeys’ sound is aggressively organic. Like a visit from the Ghost of Saint Patrick’s Day Future, they shiver the heart and thrill the soul. Ranging from intensely dramatic, hair raising adventures to bawdy and rowdy limericks about liquor; The Pikeys will transport you to a time and place where the injustices of the world are thwarted by ballads and unity of spirit.

Be sure to watch this Global News video about Abbigail Cowbrough - she was a member of the Canadian Armed Services personal that passed away during a Military Helicopter crash in Greece last year.

A group of local musicians has released a song in her memory and a tribute to her life called "The Street" (For Abbigail). We hope to be able to feature this song soon on Celtic Radio and perhaps an album later on this year.

We just want to take a moment to thank all of the listeners and members that have joined us on this 20 year ride called Celtic Radio originally starting out as Scottish Radio and before that the Scottish Highlander.

I guess we lost track of time because we didn't realize it has been 20 years, but the internet archives wayback machine jarred are memories away from thinking about a new configuration of our servers and working on a few bug fixes and updates.

Here is one of the first screen grabs of ScottishRadio.net with a counter at the bottom of the page showing a start date of June 19, 2001.

The idea for a Scottish/Celtic webcast was actually born 10 months earlier at the 2000 Highland Games at Loon Mountain in New Hampshire. Myself and fellow founders of the site were listening to the great Scottish Rock band "Seven Nations" performing their towering version of Amazing Grace. With the mountains and sunset as our backdrop and our age then on our side, we knew right there and then we needed to introduce this music to our fellow Scotsmen, our fellow Irishman - heck anyone that was willing to listen and claim a bit of Celtic pride.

By 2003 we had nearly 5 million hits and we purchased the domain CelticRadio.net and went with that to bring all of our favorite music under one domain. Here is a look at the site in 2004:

Some notable accomplishments over the years definitely would be the Live365 Best in World music (we still have the microphone award from the awards ceremony), being featured in the business section of the Boston Globe which then got picked up nationally by papers like the Wall Street Journal, getting the ear of Senator Ted Kennedy during the small webcaster fight for survival and having an awkward conversation with Harry Reid not knowing who he was at the time.

But best of all we have stayed true to our roots, are still serving up some great music and keep hearing from our wonderful members that stop by once in a while to check in. We are always sadden to hear of the passing of members over the years often getting an email from a family member about how much they enjoyed the music broadcast.

So on this Robby Burns day - here is to another 20 more and hopefully we will get that new website going - someday! (CelticMusicRadio.com) Now enough with these words - let's tune into some words of Robert Burns performed by the actor Gareth Morrison on this day!

First, a Big Congrats to the following member who won our December CD in our monthly CD Contest:

Lee from PA wins the Six Months in Confession CD.

For January we are featuring 1 brand new CD donated by Bangers & Mash - When Bangers & Mash set out to create the band the idea was to do Irish rock music with a lot of their originals. Starting out in 2003 they already had a bunch of originals that had been used in previous efforts. They soon realized that they were going in a different direction then most other Celtic rock bands. Most of their songs are stories of either their experiences in life or historical events that they feel have not been highlighted. Bangers & Mash writes from their perspective of growing up in the NY City and Long Island area. As the years have gone on their music has moved to what we call Americelt. It’s a meld of Celtic Rock, Southern Rock and Folk which when driven by Fiddle or Mandolin and an Electric Guitar plus full kit drums gives them a driving sound that keeps the crowd moving while the stories keep the crowd listening and singing along.

Fun, fast, loud.. It's Bangers and Mash. Cranking out original songs or completely skewering a classic, "BAM" gives it all they've got, all the time. They'll keep you dancing in the aisles, raising a pint, and having a ball. Bangers and Mash is "Music for the Celticly Insane”. Based in Suffolk County New York the full-time line-up includes Liam Hudock on lead vocals, Carole Lesselbaum on lead vocals and Bodhran, Brian Gabriel on electric lead guitar, Seth Lesselbaum on bass, and Anthony Anastase on drums. They have played throughout the Northeast and are now regularly touring areas of Florida and the Midwest.

Finally a new poll - I admit it has been a while. What is your favorite Celtic Radio channel and if you want to provide some valuable feed back why is it your favorite channel?

Perhaps there is something you don't like about a channel, the song selection or too many Celtic Radio plugs or anything else you might suggest to improve a channel such as new songs or artists for a particular channel.

We have an awesome Scots lady that is lending a hand on our Celtic moon broadcast and she will be helping us with some new promos for the other channels very soon.

Thank you!

Shadows, that was a different problem but I am glad you mentioned it because we have some left over code in that video program from one of our older servers that apparently was causing an issue. Give it a try and see if it now works better.

I could not figure out why it was taking so long to load until I looked at the bottom of the code and saw the offending bug.

Update: It was affecting the rating script too - video ratings are now back and working.

Welcome Piperstorm. I like your interests especial Celtic music! biggrin.gif The music here has inspired writing and is great to listen to while working. A member actually wrote a Scottish fictional book and sent it to us and it was because of the music.

We can not take credit for that, we are only a place that musicians choose to send us their music and we try to promote some of these lesser known bands that really have both talent and musical ability.

Again, welcome to the site!

Do you have any animals? We have an Aussie, an almost 17 year old pomeranian, 2 main coone cats and an amazon parrot named Hector the Hero.

Well if anyone noticed Adobe ended their Flash plugin last month and then on January 12, 2021 they and others flipped the kill switch effectively ending all Flash content on the internet.

Millions of websites that use flash suddenly do not work and there are some very popular websites that made it a business such as for Games and other fun stuff.

Lucky for us, most our website is not built on flash. So far we have identified the Penny Arcade, our Chat room and a view preview players.

There is currently an open source project out there called Ruffle which is a flash emulator built on the rust programming language. They are committed to bringing back flash 100% and we have installed it on our flash content with some success as many of the Penny Arcade games work now.

Unfortunately our flash chat room is currently offline and not working, but we expect this to come back online once the Ruffle folks implement all of the features of flash in their emulator.

If you are interested in Ruffle here is a link:

Good news, we have successfully installed a flash emulator on the site and now most of the games are working in the Penny Arcade. The emulator is being developed open source and the programmers are working on it every day with nightly builds, so while most of the games do work there are a few that don't. Keep checking back and when we update the emulator they may work.

Some of our favorites are Beer Golf and Ask Guru. Also Ant City is working although could be called a little disturbing.

Enjoy! thumbs_up.gif

Sorry to say that it looks like they pulled the plug on all flash content as of today January 12th, 2021. We will keep this part of our site going and also like we said above there are a few minor preview players that use flash on our site.

It goes without saying that this is an assault on small individuals that run websites trying to create the next big thing or just offer a place other than facebook or google to hang out. There are probably millions of webpages that ceased to work following this move and while I don't claim to know the history behind this why would a company yank a product that is used so prevalently used on the internet I would suggest perhaps they were pressured by big tech to do so.

Flash is Dead RIP 1/12/2021.

We will continue to look into a third party developer for flash and hopefully have the penny arcade back up and running later this year....

Thank you McRoach. Actually I didn't think the new browsers would work with these games, but I see now Microsoft Edge has the ability to display flash, you just have to enable it under settings. The one pain is that if you to click on enable adobe flash for the first game you play but hey it is something so not knocking it.

Thanks again for your kind comments. Yes amazing to think when we started people were still using Windows 95. Heck we were using windows 95 for some of our first servers and Windows 2000. We have come along way.

We are pleased to announce that we have brought back email services on Celtic Radio. In the past we use to offer a free complimentary email address to all members, but due to the costs involved we had to shut that part of our service down.

Starting today all Founder Club members whether enhanced, premium, monthly or yearly can choose a cool Celtic email address for any one of these domains:
  • VideoCelt.com
  • CelticRadio.net
  • StormCelt.com
  • StormGale.com
  • CelticHearts.com
  • CeltRockRadio.com
  • CelticMusicRadio.com

Visit the Email section of the Dashboard to select your new email address and obtain all of the necessary information to setup in your email client or use the included web-based email system. Enjoy!

Hi McRoach,

First I want to thank you for your long time support of Celtic Radio! We are so happy that we have managed to keep Celtic Radio going even in the face of extreme disruption that is being caused by Google and their browser chrome.

Yes, Google use to be the underdog and we took their browser and dropped Microsoft as we deemed MS as the evil empire.

Now, the tables are turned. Every step of the way Google is trying to create a new internet that requires much more advanced technology then most mom and pop sites have. Behind the scenes for almost 2 years now we have been trying to figure out ways to keep our site going from TLS handshaking to our streams which must now be SSL created. Probably soon google and other browsers are going to pull the plug on regular old internet streams and they will not work in the App store or the browser.

We setup a new secure server about 2 years ago to handle all of this and it has been a tremendous amount work, but not everything can be upgraded on a website that has been around since 2001! Still we are happy that we have kept most things going and our new website will be built on this new server - but we plan on keeping the old site going too.

Now they have pulled the plug on Flash and I do believe it is more about tech controlling who can use their platform rather than a security risk.

Here is what we are going to do:

1. If you have access to IE 11 (Internet Explorer) I would suggest keeping that running. I confirmed my version of IE11 on windows 8 can play all of the flash games. This flash issue effects:

a. Our Celtic Radio Penny Arcade.
b. Our chat room.
c. Some not often used preview players.

2. Eventually we will have a solution for the Flash issue, but the developers have not completed their work on the plugin it is called Ruffle and we will install it on the server so that Flash components will work. I tried it last night but the beta is not ready for deployment so we will keep checking monthly and once it is our flash components will work again.

3. If you notice at the bottom of our pages we recommend the Edge browser by Microsoft. So we have come full circle. The edge browser gives less errors and warnings then Google does. While you might be included to use IE11 for our entire site I think it does have a problem with facebook login, but regular old style login should work.

We will post something later here about our recommended browser, but thank you so much for raising this question and let us know if you can get IE 11 dusted off and working to enjoy the Penny Arcade - if not - I can tell you that our plugin solution will work but not until they reach version 1 of the plugin. You will not have to do anything or install anything it will just work in any browser once this new product is completed.

I'm going to have to look that up - that sounds amazing!

Forgot to mention that we are playing our annual Auld Lang Syne Marathon on Highlander Radio. This is about 12 hours of Auld Lang Syne representing around 150 different versions. This year we are mixing in the Parting Glass maybe every 10th song in memory of everyone we have loss to COVID-19. We are also featuring Simply Scottish's Hobmanay show several times between now and tomorrow.

Everyone enjoy their New Years tonight. While we will never forgot 2020, let's hope 2021 brings us brighter days!

<hr>New Year in Scotland as it's known to outsiders or Hogmanay as it's known to the Scots, is one of the UK's best attractions. As a rule, Hogmanay starts at noon upon Dec.31st going through to midday on Jan. 1st, although in the present day it could actually run to Jan 2nd, all determined by area custom.

The explanation as to why Hogmanay has become so outstanding inside Scotland is simply because Christmas time had been prohibited by the Scottish Presbyterian Church from the 17th century to the 1950's. It is said by many people that the Scottish usually do not really observe Christmas, it is simply the warm up for the big event - Hogmanay!

Festivals occur from metropolitan areas to small communities such as Kilmelford on the western coast. Those wishing a traditional Hogmanay in this kind of restful landscape will get superior self-catering cottages in places such as Melfort Village.
