I'm trying to find dates for a couple of songs-- not specifc dates, but general century/decade stuff. Why? My Civil War reenacting unit -- well-known for our campfire singing -- can only do songs pre-1865. We have a few exceptions, but generally we try to stay period-correct. Does anyone here know when the following songs originated?
"Old Dun Cow." (The Night the Old Dun Cow Caught Fire) "The Crayfish." (Fisherman, Fisherman) "The Good Ship Venus." Also, on this one, does anyone know a source for the original lyrics? I've found no fewer than 11 distinctly different versions of the lyrics online.
(Yeah, yeah, we occasionally get bawdy... obviously. You should hear us do "One B*ll Riley." We have a regular version, and our own variation, the "waltz" version.)
Finally, "The Scotsman." I've heard that this one is very recent, less than a few decades old, but can't confirm it.
