I was just reading some of the threads, and was reminded of the good fortune I've had and the tough decisions that influence every aspect of it. We all have, I'm sure, this one ultimate dream of how it might be if money were no object and we could do whatever we wanted on a whim. I figured I'd start a thread asking what these dreams are and how has the dream impacted your reality? Have you obtained elements of that dream?

I don't have any specific dreams for myself right now, I'm the college kid who changes her mind every three months. But the only thing I wish for myself, and pretty much everybody, is just to be happy with my decisions in life, hopefully no regrets, and to make my loved ones proud.

This topic is very deep for General Discussion. smartass.gif

When I was moving up the career path, every year we would have a review of goals. My long term goal was to be "Recognized as an expert in my field". In the mid-eighties, I achieved that goal in being part of a development team that designed an computer interface that was used in many computers built by many manufacturers. After that, I changed jobs a couple of times and attained the expert recognition in other fields. What made this goal effective was that it could be attained more than once with equal levels of satisfaction.

Now, in retirement, my goals are more personal and family oriented. My current goal is to recover the physical flexibility, strength and endurance that I lost when my shoulder was replaced. I would like to be able to hike the Appalachian Trail, canoe the Boundary Waters and climb various mountains that I didn't have time for when I was working, but the shoulder prevents me now. I have found that the alternative medicine of massage therapy has done wonders on relieving the pain in the shoulder, while fitness therapy restores the strength and endurance. It may be a multiyear program, but I have time.

I've been milling over my ultimate dream since Middle school. A large mansion on 10 square miles or more, with a private railroad, and sections designed to emulate periods from today back to 1000 AD, and a nice forested area for horseback riding and a walled garden on part of the roof with arrow slits in the walls, and a path down toward the back to the edge of the woods... And the walls made to seem to deteriorate to ruin as you near the bottom walking out to the woods....
There are so many elements of my dream home it's not funny, like a basement home theatre with all the equipment centrally controlled via computer console and all built into the walls with a passage in the wall for matinance....
A writing office with track lighting....

Between this and wanting to take the trips, I had plenty of dreams. Then in ~y2k, my tape deck died in the old SounDesign system I was using. I had a job, and was able to start thinking about a replacement. I wanted to do it right, so I shopped around and didn't worry about price while shopping. Wouldn't you know it! I found a cassette deck with almost all of the same features I wanted in the deck for the system I mentioned above! (except only one deck is remotely controlled, asside from both computer controlled per my dream) I spent the money and got it. It still blows me away. What scared me even more was when I compared it with my dream above. Indeed a module could probably be built to comtrol one deck of it from a computer. Same think with both decks controlled like that would be exactly as mounted in the walls of my dream room above.

Realising how close I'd gotten, and how well I was in position to do, I decided to go ahead and work on building a home theatre. I knew I wasn't going to get exactly as my dream, but I wanted to do it right and I will say that several elements of the system I'm using today would be right at home in those walls.

This experience had me realising, I have an element of a dream I thought would always be just that. I had part of my dream, and could still do more. I'm currently trying to plan for a trip to Ireland, and the numbers look doable for repeats to other places. A lot cheaper than I had figured (3-5K instead of 10-15K).

In light of these experiences, I'm trying to be careful and not mess up. I can see how fragile my position is, and I thank the Devine and my family for their assistance. It's interesting that I'm sitting here thinking seriously about things that so many dream of. I still couldn't build the Mansion of the Ages, and I've questioned if I would if I could. Perhaps the dream should remain just that, the ultimate dream. Because as such it gives me something to work toward! I can look at that, and work toward making certain elements of it a reality. I'll post more of it here over time; although a lot of it is blurry and incomplete. No telling how many issues there are built into my ultimate dream home. I never have gotten all of the details or very much of a floor plan drawn out. Although I've tried several times.

Wow a couple people beat me getting mine started smile.gif Perhaps it is a bit deep for General, but couldn't think of a better place for it, and figured it could be moved if a better spot was found smile.gif I've got detail on all sorts of parts of mine which haven't been posted yet, and change every time I think of them.

Secret passages abound, much faster in many cases, although perhaps not as comfortable as the main hallways.

My ultimate dream is to make a living out of music. I've been a pipe band drummer for 31 years. It isn't just a hobby for me, it's part of my soul. Some people think drumming isn't real music and that drummers aren't real musicians. I would have to differ. Listen to a Grade One pipe band and you'll know different.

Anyway, it is extremely difficult to make a living at pipe band drumming. You have to be very successful in both your band and in solo competition. Well, I'm putting those pieces together right now. I've put together a very respectable drum corps and have written scores that are, all modesty aside, quite good. I want to get back into competing in solos next summer. I'm hoping that if I work hard at it I can garner the kind of success I'll need to at least get started.

I may never be able to make a living at it, but I'll have fun trying!

Cheers!
Todd

Thank you to all who have shared their dreams. Very interesting. My dream is to take my singing career on a tour of the British Isles. I sing in a Celtic band, but have wanted to make a solo CD of my own music and very old traditional tunes which I have written lyrics to. An amazing thing happened Sunday. A company near where I live wants to pay for my solo CD. I start recording in January. And they want to release my CD with a big concert and then send me on tour. At this point I'm still pinching myself to be sure it's real.

Ultimate Dream...to live somewhere in the woods or rather somewhere in the Highlands, in harmony with all around me and to have the time for writing without any thoughts about time or money...

I'm far from that as a single Mom who still has to care for her kids for quite a couple of years and to earn a life...but I will never quit dreaming...and then...you never know...

Ivory,
Congratulations! It is a very fortunate few who really get to live their dream. I hope it's everything you hoped for.

Ivory,

That's so incredible! I'm so happy for you, and I also hope it's everything you want it to be. Let us all know where your concerts will be once you've gotten your schedule worked out, okay? I'll look forward to coming!

Sounds great smile.gif And cheers to you all! Here's to all of us making our dreams a reality!

cheers.gif cheers.gif cheers.gif cheers.gif

Keep up the posts, and I'll post more elements of my own dream home over time. here's one I've done some math on:

A room where the floors, ceiling, and walls are computer controlled video displays. on one side, about half way up the wall, it slants inward at an angle. I imagine some sort of ventalation system to let in outside air and redirect environmental sounds from outside into the room as well. That way I could either simulate an environment or enjoy a rainstorm while inside, yet surrounded by it. I've also wonderd what it would be like to be in such a room with morphing fractals on all the surfaces while listening to music with a spectrum analyser on the afore mentioned slanted section. Not quite sure where I'd get the tech for it tho, given if the room were 14x14x10, I'd need to put something like 15 Terrabytes of data to the surfaces in any given second. That's not counting the bandwith required in transferring and processing it all to generate the fractals or whatnot. To put this in perspective for some of you, Most people are still hard pressed to get one Terabyte of hard drive space online in a home PC.

Good luck to Ivory and to everybody here.
Dreams... When I was a schoolgirl I dreamt of freedom from classes and all this daily routine. I dreamt of being middle-aged, A Person Who May Decide For Herself. These times have come and oddly enough all dreams have gone. Except for a fantastic one: I wish it to be summer, always, light and sunshine, green grass and flowers, and to to be able to get out of the spinning-wheel from time to time.

Leto, Welcome!

I don't believe we've every had a Russian on the forum. It truely goes to show that you don't have to have Celtic roots to love Celtic music and culture.

I like your summer dream. No more winters. I think I could handle that. smile.gif

I have some pretty weird dreams! Is there someone here going to interpret them for us?
