Celtic Radio Community > Ireland > Irish King Left A Wide Genetic Trail!

Here is an interesting article I found about Niall of the Nine Hostages:

Scientists in Ireland may have found the country’s most fertile male, with more than 3 million men worldwide among his offspring.

The scientists, from Trinity College Dublin, have discovered that as many as one in 12 Irish men could be descended from Niall of the Nine Hostages, a 5th-century warlord who was head of the most powerful dynasty in ancient Ireland.

His genetic legacy is almost as impressive as Genghis Khan, the Mongol emperor who conquered most of Asia in the 13th century and has nearly 16 million descendants, said Dan Bradley, who supervised the research.

Considering some of the practices of lords getting first dibs at new brides. I'm not surprised.

This is indeed interesting.
Last night I received an email from the Director of the Clan Donald Genetic Project.
Here's what he had to say about the possible relationship between Niall and my branch of Clan Donald.
QUOTE
the 13-25-14-11s which were earlier tentatively identified by us as McInnes or Magguinesses of east Ulster.  They now appear part of a larger group which the All Ireland Project has identified as a signature of the Northern O’Neill high kings of Ireland centered around Donegal but which extends throughout Ulster and Ireland.  An electronic copy of “Scientists Discover Most Fertile Irish Male” can be found at (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060117/sc_nm/science_ireland_dc).  These lines could have came into Clan Donald directly through the O’Neills, through the O’Cahans who were the hereditary crowning branch of the Northern O’Neills or through O’Neill allies in Ulster including the Maguires.

While not all Irish are royalty, it would appear a good number of those of Irish descent have royalty in their lineage.

Both Clan MacEwen and Clan MacLachlan claim their founding Chieftains to have descended from Niall.

What about Brian Boru? I have traced one of my surnames back to his clan. Does that count?
