I'm going with my team this year to Scotland and some other places for our 'British Tour' I've never been to Scotland, so am unfamiliar with the football, as in soccer, and things there. I was hoping someone who's familiar could help me out here. I want to know if there are teams I should be aware of and such....I'm so excited to go!!! We leave in August....(that's in like 7 months but oh well)

Hello
Scottish football (we never refer to it as soccer - we believe that there is only ONE football..... not Aussie Rules, not American, biggrin.gif is almost a religion in some areas. Scotland has had some of the finest players in the world, and for a small country that is no small claim to fame.

For instance, in Glasgow the two main teams are Glasgow Rangers and Celtic (pronounced unusually with a hard 'C').

I'm from Edinburgh where the two main teams are Heart of Midlothian (Hearts, known as Jambos - from Jam Tarts) and Hibernian (known as Hibs or Hibees). I am a Hibs supporter.

If you arrive in Aug that may be before the new season opens, although that is brought forward every year....

Here's a site for the Scotland team http://www.scottishfa.co.uk/index.cfm

and another one to get you started on your quest to find out more about Scottish teams

When i was in Scotland - i was amased by all the "no football colours" signs in pubs. Though i know the reason why. It is safer that way.

It is not only the sectarian problems. It is also a matter of a dress policy. Some pubs/clubs feel that football shirts are just too casual.

Hmmmm
When they have that sign in pubs in Edinburgh, and it is MUCH rarer than on the West Coast, they often have it as a dress code - ie no jeans/no football tops.
'Smart Casual' seems to be the doorman's acceptance level.

And let's be honest - judging by the size of some of the women I've seen in Glasgow wearing Celtic hooped shirts, it's perhaps no bad thing to have standards!!!! biggrin.gif
