I usually name my vehicles. I thought since Cars is one of the top subject here why not find out how many out ther names their and a story if the have one.

Ms. Grebe is my 1979 Jeep J10 Pickup Truck.

First of all, it is pronounced Gree - Bee

There is a little humor behind this story. But first you need to know what a Grebe is.

Harper & Row's

Complete Field Guide to North American Wildlife
Eastern Edition

Grebes
Order: Podicipediformes
Family: Podicipedidae

These ducklike birds sit low in the water and have thin necks, sharp bills, and no apparent tail: their feet are very much to the rear. They are almost helpless on land, but are excellent swimmers and divers. They hold their heads erect when swimming and run along the surface of the water before taking flight. They fly with neck inclined downward, Most eat aquatic invertebrates and fish.

Any how, I was taught a long time ago that the pronunciation of this birds name was "Gree-Bee". I was out creeking with Melassa one day when we came across some of these birds, and I called them "Greebees" and Melassa (a Science School Teacher and a former Naturalist for the State of Ohio) informed me that it was pronounced "Greeb". We argued about that for a while and she showed me what it said in the "Book". So I quit arguing.

When I bought my Jeep. I informed Melassa that my Jeep's name is "Grebe" (Gree-bee). She tried to argue with me on this again and I said to her that this was my Jeep and I can name her anything I want. We both laughed and it has been that way since 1997. She even gave me a sticker that said Grebe on it with a flying Grebe on it.

And now you know the rest of the story.

My car's name is "Bessie". I call her that because sometimes she acts like an old cow and I have to coax her to go where I want her to go. tongue.gif

My Justy I called Bubasu, because it was a play on Subaru (obviously).

My fox was named Mulder (get it, Fox Mulder, from the X-files? yeah, it's lame).

My '91 Thunderbird was named Tbert, just because.

Ange's Tercel is called the Tertle, for two reasons. It's close to the actual name of the car, and the damn thing looks like a little burgundy turtle.

My Chevy pickup is called http://www.cardomain.com/id/doasa, because it's blue with a Superman decal over tint in the rear window.

My Turbocoupe, I simply call http://www.cardomain.com/id/oldraven, although I sometimes refer to her as oldraven. Plans were to paint it black, and so that would have been appropriate. But I painted it myself, and black shows all imperfections, so Candy Apple Red she be. And TC she stays.

Is it a Beetle?

I don't have a name for my current car, but my first car I called SOW. It was an acronym for (blank) On Wheels.

Also, I have a friend who named his 2nd car Eddie, after Eddie Vedder, the lead singer of Pearl Jam.

My Subaru Forester's name is Subaru-san (Ryoko-chan to her intimates).

The old Isuzu Rodeo's name was Bertha to me (but The Sneeze to my husband. If you remember the old Isuzu commercials, you know why).

Funny, but I never felt the need to name a vehicle before I had a truck/SUV... Guess it's a redneck thang...

The current truck was named by the locals "The Surf Truck Of Love" due to the fact that the bed is pretty plush with its black satin sheets, down comforter, boxed in and carpeted storage areas front to back over the wheel wells (for the DVD, wine rack, etc), rolldown black-out curtains....stock looking on the outside but a real pimpmobile on the inside.

I never named any of my cars - a horrible lack of imagination on my part, but back in the 80's my sister had a Mercury Lynx.
She named it Cuff. Get it? Cuff Lynx? laugh.gif

I never really named my cars either...still getting the list of them together....it's like old girlfriends, you THINK you remember them all but then another one makes herself known......I just usually swore at them: the cars I mean.

The girls I usually left before it really got to that stage.

My first car was an '88 cougar named "Anya"
My second car was a '95 Escort named "Scooter'
Now this car has gone to my husband, and I have a 2000 black ZX2. anyone have any good ideas? It's a stick shift and not "inspired" a name for it yet.

Since we had been talking about this I decided I needed to name my new Truck a 250 Diesel, awe awe, more power work truck!

I love me toys! So I decided to name it "Buckie".
Everyone always "ie's" my name so I figured if it was good for it's owner it would be good for it....

I named my car "Rusty Beaver". It's sort of an orange rust color and when you look at the front of it it looks like it has to big front teeth

My last Safari van we affectionately called ticker due to this constant loud ticking in the engine.

Our current Safari van we call Sticker because the the gas pedal sticks. You keep applying pressure trying to accelerate smoothly and it lets loose all at once. This can be quite exciting especially when backing a trailer full of band gear into a tight spot at a venue cool.gif

I also have a 2 tone Ford Escort that I call Beater Because when you look at it from any angle it looks like a beater biggrin.gif

For a while I had an old Dodge van I named "Probable Cause". No matter what angle you saw it from, you could articulate probable cause to make a stop (it's a cop thang).

For several years I rode a '74 Harley sportster name "Piglet" (with the image of the Winnie the Pooh Piglet holding a lance painted on the oil tank.) For those you who don't recognize honest to by-God American motorcycles, the sportster is the smallest of the Harley line. If you call a big Harley a "Hawg" then a little one just has to be a "Piglet".

My current ride is "Big Green", a '98 Dodge Ram 2500 extended cab, 4X4, heavy 3/4 ton pickup (1 ton rear-end and suspension) with a turbo-charged Cummins diesel.

My 1995 Miata is named Grover. He's blue, like the Sesame St. character. Like Grover, he has been known to fly. He also sings quite well. (his exhaust plays a great tune).

Does this mean that guys name their cars after the female gender and women name their cars after the male gender....what does that really say?

Hummmmmmmmmmmmm? Thinking? What out folkss, I'm going to blow!

yep, thinking! Ouch, this hurts!

Annabelle

Posted by: McHaggis 16-Nov-2003, 10:49 PM
Well, as long as you don't get those ".....you know, headaches with pictures? 'You mean ideas?'..."[ obscure FUTURAMA reference] you'll be OK, Annabelle.
What about us that don't name our vehicles gender specifically...

..or do gay people stay gender specific, or do bisexul car owners tend to name them stronger toward one gender to another...or............what about animal names?

Pretty much exhausted that side trip, eh, my dear?
