I said in another topic I went to the harbour to see the international meeting of old sailing ships called Brest 2004. Beautiful ships, great atmosphere, music, sea shanties, people dancing in the street. Unfortunately the wheather is not so beautifu...but never mind the sun is in our hearts ! laugh.gif
Here's a link where you can see some pictures of the feast ! "What shall we do with a drunken sailor..." note.gif

biggrin.gif And now we're all chatting together. So it only comes every four years? Is it a big race or just a showing of the boats. I live on a port and just this morning the Mackinaw Race began. It's a large sail boat race in Lake Huron, which starts in Port Huron. Last night was what we call boat night, which is a big party for the town to show off the boats and have fun before the race.

Hi Em!

It may be a few days before Celtica gets back to you with this one. She sent me a PM the other day saying that she was going on vacation to visit some family! I hope she has a wonderful time!

Have you ever been on Mackinac Island for the end of the races? You get to see all of the boats come in hell bent for leather for the finish line over several hours into the next day.

I worked up there when I was in college. We watched both races ( from Port Huron and Chicago ) come in from the porches of the large houses that overlook the straits. It is a great experience.

No, it would be cool though. I live right on the lake and the race is always fun to watch. It never gets old for me. But I am always busy with work or school. I will one of these years. cool.gif

Just a recap, if anyone was reading, the race ended today and all safety arrived. They are just waiting for the last of the sailboats to hand out the pickle award, the award given to the very last boat.

Hello Emerald !
Sorry not to have answered sooner but as Wizard said to you I had a few days of vacation. wink.gif
Yes this event only comes every four years, because if you want to have many boats to come you have to wait a little. There are many old sailing-ships meetings in France, and the more beautiful boats want to participate to all of them. Some towns build a ship only to be present at the next meeting and it's impossible to do it in one year. Above all it's an international meeting so it's very expensive and heavy to organize, you have years of preparation to allow things to go well !
Every edition has it's theme, this year it was Brazil (there was a regatta of the skippers on the brasilian jangadas - very funny, these very little boats are difficult to sail...).
To answer your question it's mostly a showing of the boats but every day you have some regattas. Strange to see a race between a big privateer fregate and a fishing ship ! laugh.gif

But I have a question for you Emerald : who winned the pickle award in Port Huron ? laugh.gif

MACKINAC ISLAND -- Fickle Lake Huron winds kept most of the 2004 Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race fleet from the finish line Sunday night, with only three boats reaching the island as of 1:30 a.m. today.

The 90-foot Turbo class entry Genuine Risk and the 60-foot open class Earth Voyager battled closely at the end of the race, with the 90-footer -- a brand-new boat from California requiring a crew of 24 to handle its sails -- maintaining a five-minute lead to cross the finish line first at 9:39 p.m. Windquest, another Turbo class boat was the third arrival at 11:11 p.m.

FIRST TO FINISH: Genuine Risk was the first boat to reach the island.

I was looking but I couldn't find the last place sail boat. There are many different catagories depending on age, size and such. I did find a picture of this year's winner though.

Well I hope you had fun on your trip and seeing all those ships. I love the idea of themes! Very cool thumbs_up.gif
