Posted by: Herrerano 31-May-2004, 01:24 PM

CHICAGO?Americans across the nation declared Tuesday that, after 230 years of trying to prove to England that the U.S. is a worthwhile and relevant country deserving of the European nation's respect, they are officially giving up.

Peckery
You didn't save OUR asses in WWII.

I think your post is offensive - and not just to any English person - I am a British citizen too...........

Posted by: oldraven 31-May-2004, 03:50 PM
Uh-oh. Saw that coming. A ) I saw one of you Americans saying something offenseve about the UK (don't judge me on this, I've heard you guys go on about the french, don't deny it), B ) I saw a UK citizen taking offense.

Guys, come on, we've got to be more carefull. Speaking before we think, yet again.

The most important thing to remember. The Onion is so full of crap it's not funny. Their job is to stir up trouble. DON'T GIVE IN!

(btw peckery, I think the UK going along with this bogus war in the intrest of good relations is thank you enough)

OR
The Canadians have a proud record of peace-keeping..... cool.gif

And it just irritates me when anyone makes a comment like that one about saving our pasty asses...

My relatives fought in the second world war - which, on this side of the pond started in 1939, not 1942.... Two of them were PoWs. No-one saved their pasty asses....

And a lot of the people who post on here proudly announce that they have English ancestry... how does that make them feel when they read comments like that? Would we say it about blacks, about Indians? I don't think so. sad.gif

Good point. But since our people did such bad things in the past it's perfectly fine to be poked fun at. rolleyes.gif

Honestly, I don't think Peckery was out to be mean spirited. He's got a reputation for being a joker, and I think that was his point here. I just don't know if he thought through what his comments would mean to people. To him, it was a harmless joke, (I hope). Just in REALLY poor taste. Kind of like an ignorant joke I made about Scots hating the English when I first started on these boards. Completely out of order, just with no intentions to be that way. I'm sure some could take the things I'm saying in the Hockey thread as rude as well. (if so, let me know)

Peckery, please retract, or at least say you didn't mean any harm in it. sad.gif

I can't believe we are trying to impress anyone anywhere.
Britian has been our loyal supporter in too many wars and we all owe each other respect.
Let's remember to use the force and we can all stay safe.
Peckery....darling.....you have such a way with words! You should write songs while you are back there beating the drums.

I have to agree.... inappropriate. One should look before they leap..... rolleyes.gif

Iain A.D. good point on 'our' telly programs. *sigh* It seems as if they are trying to lower the national I.Q. with the stuff they call 'quality programing'. I thankfully avoid that type of shlock.

"All Parts Falling Off This Car Are Of the Finest British Quality"

Will someone please explain to this stupid American the modern day necessity for the Royal Family??? Are there really that many super market openings that need a VIP in attendance??? Do you know how many hotel rooms Motel 6 could get out of Buckingham Palace??? William and Harry could be bellboys!

Last time I checked, this was a fun place to post and have fun, and no one took offence because I always say everything tongue in cheeck, hence the king.gif .

Here's the explanation, stupid.... (your words, not mine!)

The British still have a Monarchy because 'we' want one (or the majority of British people do - I DON'T, but that's another story) and because we are a constitutional monarchy.

For your information, none of the Royal Family open supermarkets. Factories, food manufacturing plants, schools, hospitals etc - yes.

Again, I find your attitude of poking fun at the instutitions of the UK more than a little off-putting. I am unfailing polite whenever I mention anything to do with your President. Perhaps you could extend the same courtesy to the UK?

You are wrong to say that people don't take offence at your comments. It's just that most of them ignore your posts when, on occasions, you go over the top.

Pasty assed? What's funny about that, pray tell?

Obviously there seems to be a fine line between humor, and being offensive, to some.I am all for good humor. Believe me! But, I know this is *not* the first time that this issue has been crossed. I would think that it would be a common curtesy not to make those type of comments about 'the English', or whomever else.
It *is* just as racist as other derogitory comments to some people.

I am so glad you have had the free time to poll everyone on this board and ask them how they feel about my posts.

Guys, you should resolve this. Now. If not here, then through pm. And I mean resolve, don't just post arguments back and forth like bickering kids.

Peckery, if you didn't intend to offend, then damn well say so. Don't just try and sugar coat the comment with other poor ones and call it all in fun. You stepped on some toes, man, it's time to admit it.

If a kid trows a rock at someone, you make them say sorry, no matter how much they want to just throw another one. Or at least, that's the way it should be. sad.gif

After that last post, you're stepping on my toes too. And she doesn't need the whole board to back her. If you offend one, you offend all. Practice some restraint.

I?d like to make a few comments here. First, there is something to be said of stating facts properly. I have said this before and it has been an issue before, if you venture off to make statements not supported by fact, you are going to get whacked. Be prepared to backup what you say, just don?t say something and not expect someone to question it. The U.S. did not single handedly win WWII. We did not by ourselves save the world from ternary. It was the combined efforts of millions of people from countries like Canada, U.S., U.K., Soviet Union, China and others ? that stopped the Axis countries dead in their tracks. I?m not a historian, but I think the U.K., against all odds, ceased Germany from invading their country. BY THEMSELVES! Before the U.S. got involved in the war, or enough to make a difference.

It is a disgrace to the soldiers that died to say such a thing. People don?t realize and will never comprehend the sacrifices that were made so that we could live in peace. I know it is hard to imagine a world different than what it is today, but people gave their lives so you could walk around and voice your opinion, freely, openly and without retribution.

In the honor of the WWII generation, I can certainly say with 100% belief that you would never hear them utter such words. Nor would they ever claim such thing. Take a lesson from them and before you actually make a claim like this, talk and asked them your question/statement.

I may be coming off a little strong on this, but both my wife and I have fathers that fought in WWII. One at the Battle of the Bulge and one at Okinawa. Especially coming off Memorial Day, it is a little disheartening to here such a claim.

Sure the whole forum isn't going to post how they disagree with your comments but as one can clearly see she wasn't the only one perturbed by what you have said. I for one agree with her whole heartedly. But in addition, I should say this. Your first comment could have been enough to poke fun, but after you saw how other's felt you could have stopped but instead you keep throwing in insults. You did not defend yourself without using insults on someone else. Yeah it is a little late but I had to add two pence.

There was no reason for this thread to have a rebirth. This was a dead issue long ago. Both of these people are no longer on this forum. One by choice and the other was removed by Mac.

Mac knew the real reason behind the hatred of these two. Mac, at that time, choose to not acknowledge that fact and let the issue die, which is what should happen to this thread.

LET IT DIE!!
