Today, I finally went to the bank and opened up a checking account. No minimum balance and no per check charge. And I ordered some nice-looking checks as well .
I did have a checking account awhile ago with one of the big chain banks. Let's just say I'm not their number one fan. I actually became a big chain bank customer by default. The bank I started my account with got swallowed up by a big bank, and that one got swallowed up by an even bigger one. Everything was ok until they took over the bank I got my car loan from. They made a mistake and refused to rectify it.
I've noticed that the small, local community bank is making a comeback. Evidently, there are people like me who are tired of dealing with big box banks like Citibank and Charter One. The bank I opened my account with bears the same name as the bank my first account was originally with. It was started by some of the officers who worked there.

I always preferred smaller banks also. Even better yet, I prefer Credit Unions. My wife and I joined one about two months ago, and they already know us by name. We don't even have to present ID anymore. I did have an account with Wachovia for about 6 months, but they sucked! Go little banks!
Glad that you found one you like, Mike. I know it's hard.
The smaller the bank the better! It seems I have a new account with a different bank every other year. One bank actually took over a year to get te title of my wifes car to us after it was paid off!
Errr! Banks. Will have to try the local credit union thing.

You know, there's a credit union about a mile or so from my house, and I never even considered it.
Oh well. Too late now.
BTW, when I told my dad that I might consider Beverly Bank (that's the name of the bank), he was like "WHAT!?!", thinking I was going back to my old bank (the one I had so much trouble with). I had to tell him it was the new Beverly Bank.

It still may be a great Idea if you set up an account with the credit union, even if it's just a savings account so that if something should happen with the new bank you are establishing a relationship with the credit union....It always helps to diversify your funds!
Since I am a member of a Bank only Military Personnel (active / retired) can join I don't have that problem. The only drawback is there are no branches anywhere or ATM's but since I get refunded all my fees from them because of it - I don't mind. and I found ATM here which don't charge at all. And all the rest I can do over the phone or the Computer.
But those chains driving me nuts - nobody knows anything. They can't answer any question and have to ask the supervisior - which wouldn't know either.
I remember in Germany whe had a small bank there and they knew us by name within a few days. I miss that a lot.
Yeah, just over $900. I cashed a starter check for $40 today. I had to get it that way because my debit card and real checks don't come in until either Thursday or Friday. Then I will change my PIN from its preset number (the last four digits of my SSN) to one I'm more comfortable with.
Several years ago, I was a walking messenger in downtown Chicago for one of the local messenger services, so I used my employee ID number as my PIN for my last debit card. I figured not too many people would be able to associate that with me.
I ordered them through the bank. I would've ordered from one of those companies that has the ads in the Sunday papers, but I would've needed the account and routing numbers. They have a better selection. These'll work for now though.

I also use a Credit Union. We have never had a problem with it. We live in a small town so not only the banks know your name but every where you go. Sometimes its a plus and sometimes not. We have 7 banks and plenty eating places. Ha that is about all there is to do here. LOL
