"Do they? you passed the void already, my dear, and nothing happened to you."

Lierin got up slowly and with the help of one crutch limped out of the room. When she came back she balanced a few volumes on her arm, half limping half jumping into the room. "This is all I have of my predecessors. A few dusty tomes handwritten with some stuff no one wants to know.. I read through them all but never was really looking for something." The books clattered on the table as she sat down again, a cloud of dust rising.

I sneezed heartily, raising another plume of dust.

You're right. I passed the void. I certainly didn't stop to linger or chat with it's various inhabitants though. I mumbled. And you did all the "doing" I continued, having realized that Lierin may very well have heard my words as clearly as had I shouted them. Her sense of hearing must be nearly as acute as that of the wolf over there. All I did was hang on and try not to 'void' in my pants. Besides, I still don't see what use I could possibly be in such a place.

I opened the volume that had fallen closest to me. Actually I just sort of let it fall open of it's own accord. Old books tend to develop a sort of 'memory'. There's nothing magik about it. The binding just tends to stretch at pages that are opened more than other pages. Usually an old book will fall open to the page that has been most often read in the past.

I was ever so careful about it, though. The pages were of parchment (raw-hide) rather than paper, scraped ever so thin. I feared they would crumble to dust if they were in the least way mishandled.

The scribe who wrote this considered it to be very important. It took an incredible amount of time and work to record it so. The scribe had to prepare his parchment and make his own ink. Only a master could make ink that wouldn't fade away to nothing after so many years, yet this is as clear as though it were written only a decade or two ago. I see he was laevus levus, left handed, you can tell by the slant of the pen strokes. I heaved a sigh. What language is this written in? The letter forms seem to be Romanic, certainly not Hebrew or Latin. I don't recognize a single word of it. I'm afraid I'm not much good with written languages other than English, a bit of Latin and enough French to avoid barging into the Ladies' room.

"Oh, I apologise.. maybe you should give me that one, I can read gaelic quite fluently. I was brought up on the islands where they still speak it sometimes. There are some english ones in that pile as well.. as.." she pulled out an even bigger volume "this one. Written by a young monk, he actually got banished into the void because he used the gates for his own purposes. And no, he wasn't irish, he was actually half french or something. A cisterncian. About.. eh... 14hundred something. His description are getting a wee bit lusty from time to time.. " She smiled mischievously. This particular young monk had ached after some non-human forms of the Otherworld... the guardians had him banished.

I allowed the volume to fall open, as I had the one before. Although the book was probably newer than the one I'd looked over before, it wasn't in nearly so good condition. The pages were of paper rather than parchment, and the ink had been more acid than that of the previous book, so quite a high proportion of the writing was obscured.

The page I first skimmed, then read, was astonishing even for our own day.

It's no small wonder this is the page the book falls open to. I commented. Even academics are attracted to pornographic description.

I turned a few pages lest I become distracted. At least one of the beings in that void have some rather unusual talents. I wonder if it was truly attracted to our young monk, or had some more sinister motive for it's dalliances. In any event the scribe was not particularly prudent, or he'd not have recorded this. It's hard to decide whether he was confessing, or boasting.

Boasting probably.. he's one of the less useful sources... she rolled her eyes. I wonder... she looked up fully into his face.. Is your full name Bill or William? she mumbled the rest barely understandable.. Or is this question too personal?

She turned another few pages of her book. I'm earliest written History here... so I doubt that I will find anything.. this is actually something transcribed by the first gatekeeper that had writing abilities.
Let me think.. Your Knights Templar.. they came over after the crusades went horribly wrong didn't they? When was that? About 13 or 14 hundreds? She thought about it. Or earlier? When did Antioch fall? When was Rosslyn built? By the way.. if you want to use the net for research, my notebook is somewhere over there she gestured vaguely into the direction to her left.

Oh.. if you want we can visit the infamous Rosslyn Chapel tomorrow. You will have to drive though.. I can't. She looked down at her leg with a disapproving look and stuck a cold pakora into her mouth, then began chewing slowly.

(just found the official website of the knights templar??? thought they died out ages ago? *grins* well... let's see...))

No, it's not personal Ha, she's not the only one with good ears.

I'm afraid I don't know my own name. At least not with any degree of certainty. I was orphaned when I was just a wee baby and apparently no one knew my parents. You could call me "Joe Schmuck the rag-man" and be as close as anybody. sigh

I use about any name that seems convenient to the circumstances, and have no need to feel guilty about it. Anything I make up might actually be the name I was born to. Besides, what's in a name? A rose is a rose and by any other would smell as sweet. Time to change the subject and get back to our purpose.

I moved Lierin's laptop over the the central table where we were working, its plastic case incongruent among the ancient books resting on the worn oak tabletop. When the machine booted up I plugged my flashdrive into a USB port.

Here are the web pages about the Knights Templar that I copied from the web while I was watching over the chapel. It's little enough but it gives us a reasonable overview.

Knights Templar

Mey Castle - Templar

Guardians of the sacred relics

Rosslyn Chapel and the Knights Templar

Templar History

Many of the surviving Knights Templar sought refuge in Scotland when the order was disbanded between 1307 and 1314. Rosslyn Chapel was founded in 1446 by Sir William St Clair of Orkney.

I pulled up the Mey Castle web page and read aloud.

The St Clairs with their medieval Knights Templar connections appeared to be right at the centre of [a complex web of religious power that ran throughout Scotland]. "These St Clair castles are all aligned on a religious grid system. It involves re-usage of ancient megalithic and druid sites," Cowie says. "When Christianity came to Scotland, earlier sites were replaced with chapels and castles to herald the new faith but Templars followed the teachings of the pre-Christian Jerusalem church, and the St Clairs were at the head of it all."

The Templars adopted the five-petal dog rose to symbolise the ancient Celtic five pointed star sign connected to Venus, which denoted knowledge. "I started investigating Templar history and learned about the 'Rose lines' that connected important places for them," says Cowie. "The village of Roslin, and its famous Rosslyn Chapel were derived from that name. I did more research and found the stem of the rose - the rose-line - ran from the ancient sites round Rosslyn through all these others to end up at Mey. At the top of the stem in Caithness, the castles align perfectly round a five-pointed megalithic stone arrangement - everything placed with perfect mathematical precision. The whole county was a Templar stronghold."

He found himself on a roll - no surprise there's a book in the offing. "I discovered the Hebrew word 'Baal' meaning 'Lord' was very important to Templars - hence the name Balantrodoch, just beside Rosslyn. Balerno is just a few miles away, and others, including Balmoral, lie on that Rose-line. I can guarantee that under every one of them, including Balmoral and Mey, you would find an ancient site or castle, to protect or preserve the old beliefs."

The cherry on the cake came when he deciphered some fifteenth century scratchings on the wall of the Rosslyn Chapel crypt and found they joined up to make a map linking sites he'd found. (This is the best bit he says - he's keeping it under wraps for the book) Persecuted by Rome as being heretics, the Templars were said to have been given refuge by Robert the Bruce and sanctuary by the St Clairs. Many castles were thought to be secret meeting places where they could practice their beliefs. The ancient rituals were later absorbed into freemasonry and
a hidden chamber with symbolic references can be found behind the library
wall in Mey.

I pointed to the book I'd been reading earlier. You mentioned that the young monk who wrote that was Cistercian? The Cistercian order was rather closely associated with the Templars. In fact, if a Templar was expelled from the order, he was required to seek shelter in a Cistercian monastery in the hopes that he could be rehabilitated. One Templar Master who quit the order sought shelter in the cloisters of the Cistercians and lived out the balance of his life there.

I glanced into Lierin's haunting greyish eyes and was struck by an unpleasant odor.
I'm sure I was blushing with embarassment as I continued. Remember I said that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet? Well, that would be an improvement over smelling as sweat, and it's been a couple of days for me. Would it be a terrible imposition if I were to make use of your bathroom to clean up a bit? It would give you change to look over some of this material.

(OOC - and what IS this thing we have with bad smells? angel_not.gif )

One of the castles the st.clairs lived in is actually in Kirkcaldy, Ravenscraig. Originally built for Mary of Gueldres but she died before it's completion. Later granted to the Sinclairs as residence.

The Bal- in some Scottish placenames actually means "town" or "village". It is a pictish word-stem. Most of these places existed before the templars came over.

She smiled as he mentioned his odor... alas she had inherited a good nose, but being polite she just not mentioned anything. Feel free, first door next to my bedroom. If you need anything look through the cupboards, there should still be a razor and shower-gel of my ex. And there should be more toothbrushes in one of them as well. Towels are in the cupboard next to the door. Make yourself at home. How cute, he's blushing! She winked at him and got up. "Just wait a minute, I need to heat the boiler up first, it's off now." she looked at her watch which showed 11pm.

She could be heard doing stuffs in the kitchen and hobbled back with two cups of tea. "you're going to have to wait until the water is heated, I hope you don't mind tea, I ran out of coffee." She put the cups on the table and sat down again, reaching to the chest of drawers behind her and taking out a packet of Boasters ((biscuits with hazelnut & belgian chocolate, just sooo jummy!)) and put them on the table.

((OOC: hehe, well I'm half wolf with a sensitive nose, deary =) ))

Just thought it sort of fits

Iron Saviour, album unification

9. Prisoner Of The Void

[Music and lyrics by P. Sielck]
[All vocals by Piet]

Have I returned from the dead
a lightning was striking my head
Clarity's filling my mind
I am refined

Unlock the gate to reality
Leaving the maze to be free
Tangled in a realm
of fantasy and dreams
Blinded by delusion and pain
I must escape - break the chain

Countless years
of existence in the cold
Now I'm at the mercy
of the one I've once controlled

From far beyond the ending of all time
I saw the light saving me from the night
Eternal slave your master has returned
Obey and release me
The prisoner of the void

Uhh, I've been traveling
the darkest dimension
A disembodied soul
in damnation
But then I found sanctuary
Peaceful rest in my own entity

Now I realize
We have reached the final shore
Oh, I can't allow him
To destroy it anymore

From far beyond

Demons of time I have felt your embrace
Out in the vastness now I know your face
Oh I gave into the power of thought
Now I must use it to leave my
Sepulchral vault

[Solo: Piet / both/ Kai]

From far beyond
the ending of all time
I saw the light
saving me from the night
Eternal slave
Your master has returned
Hear my command

From far beyond
I have been seeing the light
Eternal gods
Hear my entreaty and free me
Release me from the void

While Lierin bustled about the kitchen I returned to the young monk's writings, which essentially seemed to be a journal. As I read his descriptions of the some of the beings in the void, it struck me that the place seemed to contain many of the creatures of human fiction and fantasy. There were dark and dangerous things similar to Tolkein's orks or Dante's demons, of course, but also a fair proportion of creatures that seemed more positive. The creature that the monk had so lusted after reminded me of the 'Sirens' associated with Jason and his Argonauts, and a race of neo-humans he described could well have been the basis for the Valkyries of Nordic legend. It would make sense to me that if the void could contain souls form our world then it could also contain those from the other.

As the monk described it, the void seemed like a world of it's own, where 'good' and 'evil' are more or less equally balanced, or at least seemed to be in as much a state of dynamic equilibrium as our own existence.

It occured to me that some of the things I've hunted in the past, including a Sasquatch and maybe some chupacabras might have originated in the void and somehow made their way through a gate or portal to our own world.

When Lierin returned I sipped the tea and munched on a biscuit, allowing my mind to drift a bit.

It seems to me that we've been assuming that the vampire wants to get something out of the void. Do you suppose that it's possible he may actually want to take something into it? Could that serve any purpose that may interest him?

"I'm not quite sure, these books, apart from two, are dealing with the duty of gatekeepers rather than with the void itself. I have not many dealings with the void since it is my duty to protect the gates rather than the void. The Guardians are there for that. This monk should have written about them, his affinity lay with the falcon, while mine is the wolf. Others may have had a stronger relationship with horse or stag.. It usually depends on the gatekeeper."

She sipped on the hot liquid, thinking. "Well, if the gatekeeper fails, they can be banished into the void and the gates will be protected by that guardians for the time it needs to select another keeper. The duty has been in my family for a while now, well, about 150 years, but it might move on if my child, if I'll ever have one, is not suitable. The gates will choose the keeper by itself."
The shock of a sudden recognition flared through her as she thought about it. "The Guardians will protect the gates and the void should the keeper die unexpectedly or be banished into the void. That means the gates as well as the void will be easy to reach for anybody in that time..." Her eyes grew wide. "If he manages to banish me, he might have almost free access because the Guardians can be influenced by spells. If he knows the right ones.. " she did not speak the rest of the sentence, her tongue seemingly numb with shock.
Not the void! Not me!

She's truly afraid.

Lieren had turned pale and beads of sweat popped out of her brow. I was astounded that this woman, who had picked up a strange American walking along a roadway without so much as a second thought, rode her motorcycle like some a Hell's Angel on methampetamine and fought off vampires and ghouls with cold, calculated determination could show such true, deep-seated fear.

I saw the wolf leap to his feet in my peripheral vision, and felt more than heard his rumbling growl as I reached for Lierin's hands. They were icy cold to the touch.

To hell with him. If he rips out my throat at least it'll be a fast death.

You're neither banished nor killed yet. You still have control over your destiny.

I have no clue from what part of my being those words came from. I'm afraid I'm not much good at offering comfort. I've never had much opportunity nor need to do so.

I gazed directly into Lierin's eyes, trying to lend her strength, even as the wolf's warning grew louder and stronger, a palpable force in my head. I glared his direction. It took great force of will to keep the tone of my voice controlled and quiet, but I knew that shouting would be of no use. Nonetheless, the wolf wasn't the only alpha-male in the room and it was clearly high time to remind us both of the fact.

For goodness sake, either kill me or shut the hell up. I'm doin' her no harm.

Damn, am I a suicidal fool tonight???? If he springs I can't do a thing about it. I might be able to shoot him, but I've no doubt that killing the wolf will kill the woman just as surely as if I put a gun to her head myself.

(OOC - Please excuse me for writing for Calum, but it seemed a logical reaction on his part to the reaction on my part, "Cubby" wink.gif )

Uncle.. leave it.
Cubling, you don't know this human!
But I can decide for myself if I like somebody or not.
The wolf lay down again, a suspicious look in his eyes. Do what you want. But if he hurts you I will rip his throat open.
Aye...

"Thank you" she couldn't quite manage more than a whisper. "It is my worst nightmare.. being caught in a place without darkness nor light, no colors, no white, no black, not being able to communicate with my kin anymore and worst of all.. I would have failed my duty." she squeezed his hands tightly, but did not smile. Just thinking of this fate let her freeze inside to a statue, screaming but no tone coming out of her mouth.
"I'd rather be dead." She was feeling cold suddenly. All these years and she had not thought about that fate very often. What in all hells made her talk to him about it? After all, she barely knew him... a week? Less, probably.

She realised she was still holding his hands as if they were the anchor that would keep her steady in a flow that was not under her control. With a slight blush she looked down on the table, then pulled her hands away, getting up to get a fire going.

"You know, Bill, I never talked to anybody about this. I.. she faltered and with trembling hands finally managed to have some small flames licking at bigger logs. She steadied herself, got up and hopped back to the table sitting down again but facing away. "Well, this is my worst nightmare. One keepers duty starts when the old one dies. It is weird. You don't get schooling, you may know the old keeper and he.. or she will tell you what your duties are, what rituals to perform, but never the deeper things. And suddenly the knowledge flows over, suddenly you know all that you have to know, new things unearth every day. And I never had anybody to talk to about this. I'm probably not supposed to. she cursed inside, trying to stop her hands from trembling and watched the fire as it slowly got stronger...

I spared just a bit more time for the suspicious canine, a quick second to nod my head in thanks and respect as he lay back down. Smart wolf It was the second time in only a few hours the thought had passed through my mind. These two make quite a team.

Lierin had mentioned an "ex" earlier. I wonder if he became an ex before or after she got this gate keeper job. I glanced over at the still-glaring wolf. After. I decided. Two alpha-males can't exist in the same pack.

The heat from the fire was comfortable and comforting. There's something about an open flame that soothes the spirit as well as the body.

So you know whatever you need to know when you need to know it? That's an enviable thing. It saves time over sitting around in libraries or surfing the net. Damn, I'm talking just to break the silence. That's not like me. What the heck is going on here?!? Her fear makes me afraid, but of what? Her description of the void, as a great nothingness, disturbs me. Not even a vampire would relish a visit, let alone risk incarceration in such a place. I sipped at my now cold tea when my eye fell back to the book on the table.

I gestured toward the book. That monk was never in the void. I spoke softly as the thought matured, then in a more nomal volume. All the various creatures he described, including his bizarre lover, were 'somethings'. They were tangible things that he could see, could describe in color, could feel and could communicate and interact with. His descriptions are inconsistent with a vast nothingness. If his experiences weren't in the 'other world', then neither were they in the void you describe. I s'pose he could have been taking some good drugs, though. Ergot? Possibly. Is there something else, or somewhere else that may be accessible through the gates?

The theories of quantum physics suggest there may be an infinite number of alternative planes of existence.

Y'know, I thought Aidan's murder was a warning to me, but now I'm not so certain. I don't think this vampire views me as much more than a persistent distraction. Our encounter at the pub is the closest I've come to actually putting bullets into him since I began this chase six months ago. Can he gain anything by having you banished that he can't gain by simply having you killed? Neither thought is particularly attractive. I like this lady. I startled myself with the thought, but it was true. Hmmm. I really do like this lady.

This whole thing is just too darned complicated. He apparently wanted whatever was in that box, but if that was all he wanted he could as easily have overpowered Aidan and took it without killing the poor guy. Throwing the body at my head was certainly a dramatic way of returning it.

I don't think he wants to frighten us off his trail. He knows enough about the both of us to know that neither of us is likely to stop chasing him just because we're afraid. I think he's trying to draw at least you, if not both of us, into some kind of a trap or ambush.

Calum was still watching my every move.

Wait a minute. I did a job in Canada's Yukon Territory where I hunted a creature the Han people refer to as "Hairy Man." It's a sort of sasquatch thing, only shorter and uglier with a serious taste for human flesh. Anyway, while I was up there I learned a little bit about the way the Native people trap wolves. What they do is find a place where the trail passes through a willow thicket. They put a foot-hold trap in the trail, and then hang as many snares as they can in the willow thicket.

When wolves are traveling on a trail the alpha-female is almost always in the lead, followed by the alpha male and then the subordinate members of the pack. When the alpha female steps in the foothold trap and becomes distressed it puts the rest of the pack into a frenzy. They dash about through the willows and brush without direction, and many of them then get caught in the snares. A lot of times they use a relatively weak foothold trap, to intentionally allow the alpha-female to escape unscathed with whatever pack members have avoided the snares, to ensure survival of the pack into the future.

It appears that in your relationship with Calum, he considers you to be the alpha-female. I think it's likely that our vampire may be interested in trapping you in order to get to HIM.
I turned my head and pointed my lips at Calum. In the wild, wolves will do whatever they must, even sacrifice their own lives, to protect the alpha-female. I presume that he is no different? Although a question, I was confident I already knew the answer.

"Mmh.. I think he was more after the creatures of the other side, not the void itself.."
She sneezed and took a deep breath. "The Otherworld or Faerie as some might call it."

"You know, I don't think he could use my uncle for anything. He's a normal wolf, the only unusual thing is that he is the brother of a shape-changer.
No.. but if I would be banished to the void before it is my time to die the order of things would be disrupted. The Guardians would have to protect the gates for a time as well as the void. And they would have to find a new being to be gatekeeper. That can take a while. And during that time, the gates might be vulnerable to attacks.
"
She sighed and moved from her chair to the floor, sitting right in front of the fire, trying to warm her ice-cold inside.
"Calum is here to keep me company. This is not his actual pack, I am just his niece who needs him from time to time. He usually decides if he wants to stay or not. If not I open him a gate to where his pack is and he goes back on his own kin."
