As far as military goes Scotland has seen its share of the defence budget cut. We have had air fields shut and army numbers cut. The Russian navy has twice sent ships into Scottish waters in recent years and it has been up to fishing boats and the Norwegian navy to keep an eye on them as there are no naval surface ships in Scotland.
Scotland has no wish to try and claim to be a major player in the world. Our role will be like Norway or Denmark ,quietly efficent.
Scotland currently has no world role. Many people across the world do not even know we exist. To many we are English. I'm not claiming we are going to burst on the world stage and take it by storm but we will finally have a place at the UN and the EU we'll even be allowed our own Olympic team.

Some interesting comments.
As to the union. Scotland did not have a vote to willingly join the union. There was rioting in the streets when it came about but in those days power was held by a few men who were paid handsomely for selling Scotland's freedom. That and the fact that Scottish trade was being badly affected by the English blocking Scotland and an army ready to invade didn't really make it democratic.
As for our size. Scotland would be a small rich country much like Norway or Denmark.I know some countries had problems on gaining independence like when Yugoslavia broke up but this is not the same situation or anything like it
I know some especially in the US look at the influence of Braveheart. That was a film that was out many years ago. It was mostly fiction with some basis on facts. There have been Scots campaigning for independence since the day we lost our independence. The SNP have been around for 80 years ,Braveheart maybe got some Scots many years ago to read more about Wallace but it will not influence the vote in Sept.
We are not splitting a country apart. Scotland is a country, one of the oldest in the world we just want to have decisions about Scotland made in Scotland. We want to retain the money made in Scotland in Scotland,we just want to be a normal country again.
I reckon you can tell I'll be voting YES.

Just some points of interest.

The vast majority of the Jacobite army was non Catholic.

The Prince was such a devout Catholic that he converted to the CoE though he was supposed to have come back to the Catholic faith prior to his death so really he wasn't that caught up in all the religous stuff.

The name Stuart supposedly came about when Mary Queen of Scots went to France the French had problems with the letter W so it became Stuart.

We are over 250 years away from those times we think differently and live differently.
I enjoy reading about Jacobite history and visiting all the sites of Jacobite interest.
And just because you don't stay in Scotland doesn't mean you can't have a view or a say.Remember the Jacobites weren't exclusively Scottish either French,Irish and English lost their lives as Jacobites as well.

I've seen one of the copies that was made in the 1950s.And I emphasise it was a copy not the real thing as it wasn't a very good copy.
The story I like to believe is that the good monks of Scone knew Edward was coming and hid the real stone and replaced it with a cludgie (or cess pit) lid and thats what was taken.
Edward never built the ornate chair that he had planned and he also sent soldiers back to Scone. So who knows maybe the Scottish monks had the last laugh.

I've been to Iceland twice before and will be back there in 2 weeks team to see the Scottish football team play Iceland.Pity your going to just miss that.
Its a stunning country like no other I've been to.
As you come in its like landing on another planet.
I've not seen much outside of Reykjavik other than for the air or a bus.We did go to The Blue Lagoon which is a must for any tourist.
One big big drawback though, the cost, its very expensive.I know Scotland isn't cheap for tourists but Iceland beats us.

QUOTE (glaswegian @ 22-Aug-2008, 11:24 PM)
Coming from the westcoast of scotland, we have hundreds of thousands of scots whos' ancestors were irish. While a lot of them are proud of this fact, I have never met a scotsman who described himself as irish. to call oneselve irish because they had irish ancestors 2 -3 generations ago would be even more ridculous.

Are you being serious with that statement ????? I to come from Glasgow and there are plenty of Scots born and bred who would look to Ireland as their country. You only have to look at a Celtic match to see that.Where a proportion of their fans would choose Ireland over Scotland.

And before anyone jumps in the other side can be even worse looking to England over Scotland.

And its no problem to get rid of the butchers apron as your flag and get our own flag on there.

I think a lot of this is a matter of opinion.I have travelled in the USA and Canada and yes sometimes there is a misty eyed view of Scotland but whats wrong with that.
Many people in Scotland think the USA has a huge hot beach and theme park in Florida and maybe some shops in NY.Thats no more the real USA than Glencoe is the real Scotland.
Scotland is moving on but so are other countries. However I believe our culture remains strong whether through our music or the way that many of us view ourselves as a country now and our place in the world.
A friend of mine explains it best when he told me "The USA is my country of birth and I love it dearly but Scotland is where my blood comes from"
I can understand that.Scotland now has many new Scots living here and while they are Scots they also remember the traditions of the countries where their parents or grandparents came from.
And I would hope that any visitor coming to Scotland to seek out their roots and see where their family came from would be treated with the same respect I have always been treated with while attending games and visiting in the USA or Canada and if they are not then we in Scotland have a lesson to learn from our cousins.
