but, I"ve never been there.

Posted by: Lady of Avalon 05-May-2008, 05:41 PM
Yes ctbard actually we'll be living on farms in differents parts of the country and planning rides on Icelandic horses.
Gees my poor ar.. will get it, it's been years since I've practiced horseriding. But hey! no pain no game...isn't it the saying? fear.gif LOA

Icelandic horses have a very smooth gait, their a gaited horse, their "tolt' gait is amazing.
One of my friends horses, named Juni, was the Icelandic horse of the year in his day, he was born there, he's now about 30.
He's so sweet. I think I'll put his picture up in members photos.

Posted by: Lady of Avalon 05-May-2008, 06:13 PM
Hi ctbard, what a wonderful horse indeed.
Very sturdy, the Mongols use to ride a similar kind of horse and even today's tribes in the mountains, that's the kind of horse they still rides for it's sturdiness and stamina for long distance in rough terrain.

Posted by: Finduella 24-May-2008, 08:09 AM
Hi lady of Avalon. I rode Connemarra ponies in Ireland and was a bit nervous as I hadn't ridden for years and certainly didn't want an injury miles from home. No worries at all. The Connemarra is a sturdy short legged breed that looks similar to the lovely photo c.t has of the Icelandic horse. I felt very safe on the sturdy little ponies.

I would love to make it to Iceland and will be very interested in your trip, how exciting!

Posted by: Lady of Avalon 25-May-2008, 04:36 PM
Hi Finduella, I see that you've change the name, I was not sure who you were at first.

Yes I think I'll quite safe on the horse's back, actually it's my own back that I'm worried about. I don't have a strong back anymore. And I know that horse back riding is not the best thing to do when one doesn't have a good back to start with. But we'll see once there how it goes.

Iceland seems like an incredibly beautiful place, one of which I'm sure we'd love to see pictures of after you go!

Posted by: Lady of Avalon 27-May-2008, 05:48 PM
Hi jime307, you can be sure that I'll put up some pics in my profile.

I just can't wait to see that wonderful country with so many places to explore and meet icelandic people and learn their cultlure.
This fascinates me and so far (touching wood) in our travels we never met unfriendly folks.
You'll have to wait a bit though because we leave at the end of september and back in the middle of October.

I've been to Iceland twice before and will be back there in 2 weeks team to see the Scottish football team play Iceland.Pity your going to just miss that.
Its a stunning country like no other I've been to.
As you come in its like landing on another planet.
I've not seen much outside of Reykjavik other than for the air or a bus.We did go to The Blue Lagoon which is a must for any tourist.
One big big drawback though, the cost, its very expensive.I know Scotland isn't cheap for tourists but Iceland beats us.

Posted by: Lady-of-Avalon 26-Aug-2008, 06:21 AM
Thanks Jacobite,
Yeah I know it's expensive but a vacation like that in my eyes in an investment. Too bad we will miss the match though.

Well the countdown has begun for me.

In 12 days I'll be leaving for Iceland. Tonight I started the preparation so that we won't forget things needed for the trip.
This is getting exciting now day by day for we've been looking forward this trip for 2 years. As soon as we got back from Wales we started to plan for Iceland and here we are just 12 days away from it.

Almost everything is packed up for the trip.
Everyday I visit the net to look at beautiful pictures from this country.
Fantastic vistas that I just can't wait to see with my own eyes and then have them frozen in time on my camera.

Only a few days left (less then 8 days) and my dream will come true.

Well, now in less then a week I will be off to Iceland.
Today I typed our log journal for the trip, completed the list of things not to forget and so on. Pretty much everything is ready only a few trinkets to drop in the trunks as the last minute on Friday.

My Dickens (my cat) seems to have adopted my bags this week-end and he makes this little annoying noise when I take him down from it he just jumps right back on it.
He knows that we are about to leave soon, he follows me everywhere in the house.
I think he remembers the last time when we left for Wales for when we came back he snobbed us for a couple of days...rotten cat.
Oh! well I guess this time he'll snob us for longer then the last because now he'll be completely by himself since his old sister passed on last november.

The countdown is on now...

LOA

Excitement is in the air at home now as we get nearer and nearer our departure on Friday...especially me for I hardly sleep in the night thinking about everything.Try not to forget this and that and so on.

And cat is getting more frustrated by the minute, the snobbing as started (the traitor)because now in the morning he goes down in his room and doesn't come up...poor baby I'll miss him.

Tonight it'll be the final check on things and then closed the bags and all 'til Friday.

2 days to go...

LOA,

I hope you have a wonderful trip. I can just imagine the look on your cat's face. I wonder if they have any concept of time. I know when we go on trips our dogs take full advantage of my daughter who looks after them.

I have a friend who brought me back a product from Iceland called Blue Lagoon Geothermal skin care. It is a very nice moisterizer and also there was a face mask. Do you plan on enjoying the thermal waters?

Stay safe,

Flora

Why thank you Flora, we will and don't worry we'll stay safe and as much as we like to discover and explore we always travel on the safe mode and caution especially in the unknown.Even here it is our way.

As for the geothermal waters and lagoons you bet that we will experience them and plan a massage in the lagoon itself. I'll be in complete bliss I may fake amnesia not to come back..hahaha!!!

Thank you for the well wishes...

Good afternon all,

Iīm in the town of Selfoss right now logged in at the local library looking up personal emails and log in here as well to tell you that all is right though a bit tired and looking forward to get home.

For today my stomach doesnīt sit well and need to relax and quiet things down before leaving.

Iceland is a great country and people are just so friendly and easy going
we are in a small cottage for our last days here and the view is simply unbelievable.
This morning we went out to view one of the most active and unstable volcano of Iceland "Mount Hekla" we were able to go at itīs base for this morning it is covered in snow. But what a view for one can very clearly see the central crater still smoking for it is still hot from the last eruption in 2000. Canīt wait to share my pictures with you guys.

By for now and see you all soon.

Hi Harlot, what happened to your avatar?

The temperature was quite changing from one place to another. But for me it's never cold enough for I like cold. I breathe and live cold.

I'd that mostly it was around 2 to 3°C except when we went up on the glacier it was -3°C in a matter of minutes and when I say minutes it's about 2 minutes!!!
But since it is very dry cold it's not the same as cold with humidity which is a killer, though dry cold can kill as well but it's not the same.
It got really cold when we were on top and the wind picked up then it was real cold.

Harlot

Yes I like it very much it's a nice one.

No, not in a near future anyways for as much as I would like to go where it is warmer climate I would not enjoy myself for I have asthma and migraines and these two unfortunate health weaknesses are not compatible with hot and warm.

Even in the lagoon, the thermal waters could be very warm at some spot and even though my old bones hurts like the devil sometimes I do go in it but is out very fast. And a second handicap is that my body doesn't cool off by itself when doing physical efforts for a time instead of cooling off by sweating I keep getting warmer and warmer and that is not good for I end up weak with not resistance so I have to either cool off in cold water like I like to do or drink cold water or eat ice cubes and then I'm fine...even husband don't come near me when I'm hot for I am like a furnaise and can't stand myself that is why we have a pool here and in summer time if water gets too warm and doesn't refresh me I empty some of it and refill with colder water.

Maybe when my thermostat get better and IF it gets better for even young I was like this, well then maybe we'll plan on going in warmer countries.

Awesome pictures, LOA. Thank you for sharing.
Was that a blue sweater or coat you were wearing? I loved it.

Val

Valpal59,

The sweaters that my husband and I are wearing on the pics are called "IceWear" and we found them while visiting a wool factory in a small village in Iceland.

They are made of pure wool and have an insulated inside made of polyester and polyurethane material. It is wind proof and very warm when worn with a good sweater under it and very light...better then a big coat.

But as warm and wind proof as it is it would not be enough to only wear this sweater in temperature say in minus 20°C alone one would definetely need a warm big coat over it.

For as we were way up on the glacier the temperature dropped form 1°C to -4°C in a minute and add the windshill factor with that...so just the sweater would not have been enough for staying out for long hours.

But they are very comfortable to wear for their lightness.

Glad you enjoyed the pics.
