I received this email from a military families organization I am enrolled in. Anyone who has ever tried to get private or "filler" health insurance knows that if these things are left to private health care it will drive their premiums sky high and make it nearly impossible to even get health inurance! What an insult to our veterans! Please do what you can to help and spread the word. Thank you

Dear Military Families United Member and Supporter,

President Obama announced this week that he is considering a plan to make our veterans pay for treatment of injuries they received while serving this country. For the first time, President Obama’s plan to charge veterans through their private insurance for service-related treatments will expose wounded veterans to co-pays and deductibles for care of their war wounds. A policy like this would amount to a betrayal to our troops.

We Can Not Allow This To Happen

Military Families United, the nation’s leading military family advocacy organization, has joined America’s veterans organizations in adamantly opposing this fundamentally flawed change in policy. Obama’s plan will drive up premiums for veterans, make it more difficult for veterans to find and maintain health insurance, and hurt employment opportunities for disabled veterans.

The Veterans Administration has a responsibility to care for our current and future veterans. This plan falls drastically short of the support that our veterans deserve.

Today, we ask you to help us fight this apparent abdication of the Obama Administration’s responsibility to our veterans. We ask that you:

1. Send an email to President Obama letting him know that you will not tolerate forcing our veterans to pay for injuries they received protecting this country

2. Forward this email to 3 friends

Our veterans are our nation’s heroes. They answered the call when our country needed them most. They served their country with pride, with honor, and with courage. For their sacrifice and their service we owe our veterans a debt of gratitude. As the thousands of troops return from Iraq and Afghanistan, they deserve to have the full support and resources of the Veterans Administration.

I sent this to a few folk on my personal email and had some replies doubting the validity. Here is a story fox news did about this issue:

Wait. Is he asking Veterans to pay for their own treatment, or asking Insurance Companies to cover the costs? It sounds like the latter. That being the case, wouldn't a policy banning those companies from raising rates over service related injuries take care of the problem? I really have no sympathy for any kind of Insurance company, and them turning around and raising rates for Veterans makes them the despicable folk in this tale.

I can't say enough that this problem wouldn't exist with public health care, and even less with special concessions for injured Veterans.

If it does, in the end, cost the Vets themselves, then yes, it's a very bad plan.

Ishillinger;

If this is true them Shame on the American Government. What's next ask them to pay for the ammunition they may have expended.

Camac according to fox news this is indeed true. I posted a link to the article regarding this matter. The president has already met with several vets organizations that were basically told if they didn't like thsi plan to come up with another way to get 500 million dollars.

And yes Oldraven it is going to hurt the vets in the end. Higher insurance rates, deductibles, co pays, and private insurance has a lifetime maximum that they will pay. Mine is 1 million dollars for expample, which can go very quick if you are seriously ill/injured.

What the president is suggesting is the private insurance provider of the individual vet pay reimbursement to the government for the healthcare. This even applies to wounds received during wartimes etc.

I too sent this on to my friends I email.They ask them to take a chance with their lives and then to know that our government will not back them up if they should get hurt well that just isn't right. What would they do if they can't get anyone to inlist start the draft back up. I think some would live the country like they did back in the 60's.

Ischillinger;

If this happens it is beyond the pale, it is contemptible, disreputable, and immoral to say the least. I can't see it ever going into effect as it is totally disrespectful of the sacrifices made by the American Military and their families. What is this the 10th Century? It can't be true a mistake has been made. No civilized Nation would even contemplate such action.

Many American families are, even now, shouldering a portion of the responsibility for medical care and rehab for their children injured in recent combat. Especially that for psychological disabilities. Some of the most critically injured are languishing in extended care facilities with no VA assistance. Should this proposed action become law, the military will cease to exist and we will have nothing but a nuclear umbrella. That in the hands of a politician with no other options is scary.

SCShamrock and I had both started threads on this, so any who don't believe it we both quote different sources. Those threads ca be found here But I Won't Back Him On This One, Dumping on Vets and here Obama Administration: Bill Vets Insurance, To care for him who shall have......

Glen Beck was reporting this afternoon that the President had backed away from this but I expect they'll come back to it later when the administration thinks we're not paying attention.

Our wonderful city has something like this that they are considering although not with vets. They want to start charging a fee for fire services. If your house burns down you will get charged for the fire department coming to put out the fire. Nice huh?

Wanna see more than the stock market drop? Watch Obama's approval percentage if this thing goes through.

I truly hope that this is somehow an exaggeration or expansion of the truth. I'm just hearing about it for the first time here. Why would anyone continue to serve this country if they feel their president is not behind them. I also heard that Obama is talking about a mandated service from all Americans as part our citizenship duty. Perhaps these are tied together? Roll up the welcome mats at VA's and force everyone to serve. Whoa...new world order here we come.

Should mandatory service come into the picture, politicians children will be exempt as in the past and there will be a mass exodus of our brightest young people seeking political asylum!!
