Come on. Somebody's got to have an oppinion here. It's the playoffs. And in good ol' US vs CANADA style. The way it should be. sly.gif

My team got knocked out in the second round, and my backup team didn't even make the western, so I'll cheer for Calgary, no matter how much it hurts.

LET'S BRING THE CUP HOME, B'YS!!

I'm with you OR!!! Three more wins and Calgary brings home the Cup. Then, next season, we can all jump off of the Calgary bandwagon and resume cheering on our teams (if there is a season).

Posted by: oldraven 26-May-2004, 07:24 PM
Winning or losing, as long as they're playing I'll be cheering. beer_mug.gif

I had to adopt this attitude when the Habs started losing again in the mid 90's. But hey, it's a beautiful thing to see the faces of all these Oiler fans to see Calgary go to the finals, and know Edmonton didn't even make the Western. After hearing all the cracks about the Flames over the past five years, I think it's bloody karma. laugh.gif

That's like ball for Canadians. Yeah, there are Canadian baseball fans, but most of us just can't be bothered. I wonder sometimes how you can sit through a whole game without flippin the channel. Actually, now that I joined a local beer league, it's starting to hold intrest. tongue.gif Still can't watch a whole game on telly, but I find myself yelling at some outfielder from time to time.

So, when do we battle next? ..... erm, when's the next game? brb

Thank you Peckery. I have never heard of the Flames either.

So I take it that the Flames is a Hockey team. unsure.gif

I would much rather watch Hockey than Basketball anyday and that goes for Soccer too.

Down here, you don't see Hockey much on TV. And I do not watch the Sports Channels. The only Sport that I half way watch, other than Flyfishing, is American Football. wink.gif

Posted by: oldraven 26-May-2004, 07:51 PM
You leave me wondering why there are more American hockey teams than Canadian. blink.gif

And the next game is tomorrow night, @ Tampa.

The Flames are Calgarys team in the NHL. Considered to be one of the most overlooked teams in Canada, and for a reason. They don't win much. It's been since '89, I think. Did they ever win another cup? So don't feel too bad. But yes, we even know who your bad teams are down there. tongue.gif

GO LIGHTNING!!!

I have to root for them since your bloody Flames knocked my Red Wings out of the playoffs.

Many 'Mericans on the board may not be hockey fans, but so far none that have weighed in are from Michigan. Hockey is huge here. In the Detroit area there are enough arenas to compare with a Canadian city. That's why we have 5 NCAA Division 1 hockey teams here.

I'll be interesting to see what happens to the Wings roster next year. A lot of legends nearing retirement.

Posted by: Aaediwen 27-May-2004, 07:00 AM
Hockey? hmm. ok.

It's almost blasphemous around here not to watch Wildcat Basketball. I do on occasion, but I don't make a point of it. Not one for sports of any kind. When I read the first post in this thread, I was wondering what I was supposed to start flaming you for...

Unsolicited flames are never a good idea, but if if someone asks for it? You trying out a new pair of asbestos longjohns, OR?

Posted by: tsargent62 27-May-2004, 07:09 AM
Where I live hockey is so huge it's hard to imagine it not being as big elsewhere in the US. I never had the opportunity to play when I was a kid, but both my boys do. You even see girls and grown women wearing Red Wing jerseys. Girls hockey leagues are springing up. It is a challenge to get tickets to a Red Wings game, and if you can find them you're going to pay big bucks.

It is strange. I always thought it seemed unnatural to have NHL hockey in Florida. Hockey is real big in Minnesota and New York. But, based on the number of dates for travelling hockey schools, Michigan is biggest.

You may to be shocked to learn this Adam but California records the largest amount of anual snowfall in the United States with averages well ove 600" in some places. wink.gif

It does tend to produce some warped personalities which may explain the presence of a hockey team tongue.gif

Hockey is big in Florida because of all the retirees that move their from the cold northern states. Ever look at the crowds at one of those games??? Looks like a private party for the crypt keeper.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not, Raven. It wasn't a game, it was the war. A long forgotten skirmish where the US tried to take over Canada, but were sent home. Come on, they must be teaching this one in the Schools down there. I feel a song coming on.

Billy Green
-by Stan Rogers

Attend you all good countrymen, my name is Billy Green,
And I will tell of things I did when I was just nineteen.
I helped defeat the Yank invader, there can be no doubt,
Yet lately men forget the name of Billy Green, the Scout.

'Twas on a Sunday morn' in June when first we heard the sound,
Three thousand Yankees on the road to camp below Greentown,
Two Generals, Artillery and Company of horse,
With many rank and file afoot, they were a mighty force.

Says I to brother Levi, "Well, we still can have some fun!
We'll creep and whoop like Indians to try to make them run!"
Which then we did both loud and long, much to the Yanks' dismay.
They fired their 'pop-gun' muskets once and then they ran away.

Well, first they plundered Stoney Creek and then John Gage's farm.
They cut his fences for their fires although the day was warm.
They bound my brother Isaac up and took him from his home;
They pillaged all the countryside, no mercy there was shown.

Then says I to myself, "Now Billy, this will never do.
Those scurvy Yanks are not the match for Loyalists like you".
My brother's horse I quickly caught and put him to a run,
And reached the British camp upon the heights of Burlington.

Says I to Colonel Harvey, "Now, let there be no delay,
If we're to reach the Yankee camp before the break of day.
I'll take you through the woods by night where I know every tree,
And ere the dawn you surely can surprise the enemy."

With men and guns we then set forth the enemy to seek,
Across the beach at Burlington and then to Red Hill Creek;
We came upon their sentries; we surprised them every one.
One died upon my sword, and all the others off they run.

And so it was we were in place one hour before dawn.
We fired three times upon the camp and then we marched along.
We fired again and charged as Colonel Harvey gave the word,
And put the enemy to fight with bayonet and sword.

With great confusion in the camp, two Generals were caught.
The Colonel and his men made their artillery as naught.
We killed over two hundred and we captured all the rest;
Nor did we lose but eighty men; of them we had the best.

And so it was I played the man though I was but nineteen.
I led our forces through the night that this land would be free.
I foiled the Yank invaders and I helped put them to route,
So, let no man forget the name of Billy Green, the Scout.

Adam this is all very far fetched. The government is in charge of the military down here in southern North America and I really can't believe that they would ever have their hand in anything like that. Surely it would have at least have been on the news and I can not recall that ever happening.

I never understood why everyone just quit with the space race. And what's the story with the space station? Wouldn't it have been much easier to build on the moon itself? It looks like their star player does best for the team when he gets benched. laugh.gif

Calgary took it again last night 3-2 in overtime. We were getting updates at the ball game last night as one of our players spend half the game on his cell. Watching one game and listening to another. tongue.gif

Oh, but we lost. sad.gif again.

I've been talking about the whole Nieminen issue with a lot of people over the past few days, and my opinion is starting to change on that. It seems the hit was a lot worse than I thought. I hadn't actually seen the hit, but I was under the assumption that it was just a blind checking from behind. I guess he was bleeding a lot when he got up, so it couldn't have been too minor. And seeing as it's his second time in these playoffs, and doing it at the end of an already lost game, I'll have to agree that he needed to sit out. Looks like we're all paranoid after the Bertuzzi incident.

Alright, come on boys, one more and you can rub it in Edmonton's face all next year. tongue.gif
