Today on CNN Headline News there was a report from Washington state....

...seems a town in Washington state has ruled that there will be no Halloween festivities there because it is insulting to Wiccans....

I for one don't celebrate this commercial holiday, but in the area of the country I live the uproar is from christians that this holiday is a day of Satan.
I find it ironic that both of these different view points are really both against the same thing. OK which is it....

Halloween is also the the day before Samhain (Celtic New Year). Why not celebrate it as a Celt?

Here is some information about the day.

As a Christian, I can only answer from my point of view. I don't view any day as a "day of satan". David says in the psalm, "This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. " So I don't know about the rest of you, but I know what I'll be doing on that day. wink.gif

I did not say I did not celebrate Samhain... I said I do not celebrate Halloween.

Modern Wicca is nothing like the supposed witches of the past...those poor folks were victims of mass histaria... modern Wicca is an attempt to emulate the pagan practices of the past... I will leave it at that.

What utter BS. Wiccans have nothing to do with it nor does political correctness. Follow the money. It's about allocation of time for hospitals to x-ray candy, about police overtime, about vandalism, it has not one thing to do with insulting anyone.

If you think that's bad, there's a group within the Republican Party that wants to make the US a Theocracy, giving law enforcement the authority to use the Bible to overrule the law, eventually making the Bible, as they interpret it, the supreme law of the land.Welcome to the new dark ages. rolleyes.gif

I'm already thinking about seeking political asylum in Canada. I don't see the US getting any better for a long time. Fact is, I see it getting more authoritarian and oppressive.

*sigh*
ugh

the country is a republic headed for a dictatorship.
Fascists on one side and cummonists on the other(extreme I know)

I couldname a half dozen times where the bible was used as law..dark ages, crusades, persecution of the huguenots(told to change religions or die) pagans, holocausts, and many groups like the kKK use it as well..
*sigh*
dark times (whomever wins) seem to be on the horizon.

sorry...that will prolly spark a debate..if I offended anyone, i apologize..just rambling out loud

I did not mean for this thread to go into a political discussion about the US and other countries... my observation was strictly about the celebration of a "holiday" and how it is being percieved in this country and how those on different sides seem to come to the same conclusion with different reasons.

Kind of like when Harry Potter first came out and Christians condemned it saying that it was a "recipe for witchcraft" and the 'witches' condemned it saying that the portrayal of flying on the brooms was all wrong because they were flying them backwards.

The average person in the US has no clue what Halloween is about or where it came from. Fundamentalist Christians teach it is a "Devils holiday" and condemn it. They have no idea beyond the idea that witches are evil, even though witchcraft was originally about healing. IMO, Chistianity turned it's back on the message and went for power instead and all of it is about controlling the people and maintaining power rather than the original message of Christ. All holidays have mostly lost their meaning in modern society and become little more than an excuse for a party and/or a day off from work. (end of rant)
My own view is this regarding Halloween, or Samhain. The Last Harvest. The Earth bids a sad farewell to the God. I know that He will be reborn of the Goddess and the cycle will continue. This is the time of reflection, the time to remember and honor the Ancients who have gone before us and the time of visions. As I contemplate the Wheel of the Year, I recognize my part in the eternal cycle of Life. The trappings of the modern holiday have little relevence.
