Maybe the author of the article didn't do a good job of summarizing the address or I'm missing something, but I don't see the correlation between a declining birth rate and the economic crisis (if there is one) as there are fewer workers contributing to pension programs, and the decline of belief in the Biblical God.

I'm thinking that the author is trying to link the lower birth rate to either abortion or people's unwillingness to have children in this day and age. Didn't the Pope (new or last one, I'm not sure) encourage Italians to have more babies. Must be some connection somewhere or they are just scared that there will not be enough future workers to take care of the baby boomer generation when it hits retirement so they are trying to bring in a religious angle.
