Celtic Radio Community > Technical Support > Penny Arcade Retired?

So with Adobe getting rid of their flash player does this mean the end of the Celtic Radio Penny Arcade?

I receive an Adobe Flash error every time I attempt to open a game. First Farmville and now Penny Arcade! I'm too old or technology is outdated too quick. Perhaps both!

Happy New Year!

Hi McRoach,

First I want to thank you for your long time support of Celtic Radio! We are so happy that we have managed to keep Celtic Radio going even in the face of extreme disruption that is being caused by Google and their browser chrome.

Yes, Google use to be the underdog and we took their browser and dropped Microsoft as we deemed MS as the evil empire.

Now, the tables are turned. Every step of the way Google is trying to create a new internet that requires much more advanced technology then most mom and pop sites have. Behind the scenes for almost 2 years now we have been trying to figure out ways to keep our site going from TLS handshaking to our streams which must now be SSL created. Probably soon google and other browsers are going to pull the plug on regular old internet streams and they will not work in the App store or the browser.

We setup a new secure server about 2 years ago to handle all of this and it has been a tremendous amount work, but not everything can be upgraded on a website that has been around since 2001! Still we are happy that we have kept most things going and our new website will be built on this new server - but we plan on keeping the old site going too.

Now they have pulled the plug on Flash and I do believe it is more about tech controlling who can use their platform rather than a security risk.

Here is what we are going to do:

1. If you have access to IE 11 (Internet Explorer) I would suggest keeping that running. I confirmed my version of IE11 on windows 8 can play all of the flash games. This flash issue effects:

a. Our Celtic Radio Penny Arcade.
b. Our chat room.
c. Some not often used preview players.

2. Eventually we will have a solution for the Flash issue, but the developers have not completed their work on the plugin it is called Ruffle and we will install it on the server so that Flash components will work. I tried it last night but the beta is not ready for deployment so we will keep checking monthly and once it is our flash components will work again.

3. If you notice at the bottom of our pages we recommend the Edge browser by Microsoft. So we have come full circle. The edge browser gives less errors and warnings then Google does. While you might be included to use IE11 for our entire site I think it does have a problem with facebook login, but regular old style login should work.

We will post something later here about our recommended browser, but thank you so much for raising this question and let us know if you can get IE 11 dusted off and working to enjoy the Penny Arcade - if not - I can tell you that our plugin solution will work but not until they reach version 1 of the plugin. You will not have to do anything or install anything it will just work in any browser once this new product is completed.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was able to play around with my security settings and get the penny arcade working again through my incognito chrome browser. That's right, Celtic Radio is part of my secret browsing but mostly because I do not have to clear cookies as much. Sounds like there are work arounds in place and if I have issues I will switch over to edge.

Keep up the great work and cheers for keeping the site going for the last 20 years! I look forward to telling my grandkids that I used CR "back in the day" and that it is almost as old as the world wide web! LOL

Thank you McRoach. Actually I didn't think the new browsers would work with these games, but I see now Microsoft Edge has the ability to display flash, you just have to enable it under settings. The one pain is that if you to click on enable adobe flash for the first game you play but hey it is something so not knocking it.

Thanks again for your kind comments. Yes amazing to think when we started people were still using Windows 95. Heck we were using windows 95 for some of our first servers and Windows 2000. We have come along way.

Sorry to say that it looks like they pulled the plug on all flash content as of today January 12th, 2021. We will keep this part of our site going and also like we said above there are a few minor preview players that use flash on our site.

It goes without saying that this is an assault on small individuals that run websites trying to create the next big thing or just offer a place other than facebook or google to hang out. There are probably millions of webpages that ceased to work following this move and while I don't claim to know the history behind this why would a company yank a product that is used so prevalently used on the internet I would suggest perhaps they were pressured by big tech to do so.

Flash is Dead RIP 1/12/2021.

We will continue to look into a third party developer for flash and hopefully have the penny arcade back up and running later this year....

Good news, we have successfully installed a flash emulator on the site and now most of the games are working in the Penny Arcade. The emulator is being developed open source and the programmers are working on it every day with nightly builds, so while most of the games do work there are a few that don't. Keep checking back and when we update the emulator they may work.

Some of our favorites are Beer Golf and Ask Guru. Also Ant City is working although could be called a little disturbing.

Enjoy! thumbs_up.gif
