Allen, this is very interesting. I never knew there were that many variations of the Gaelic language. Is it more of a dialectic thing or regional?

Hi Aragorn!

Here is how it all breaks down. There are two branches within the Celtic Language family: Gaelic and Brythonic. There are three languages within each:

Gaelic:
Irish
Scottish
Manx

Brythonic:
Welsh
Breton
Cornish

I intend to try to put a little something of interest for people learning all 6 languages here! Hope you enjoy it!

Wow, people trying to learn all 6, that would be very confusing for me. I find it is tough enough to learn one. The biggest hurdle I am having is wanting to know how to sound out the various words and letter combinations. I see the Gaelic words and the pronunciation tables but it just is not clicking. With all the accent marks over the letters, how does one letter with an accent mark sound over the same letter without one. Am I being too critical? It is one thing to be able to write it, to speak it is a totally different experience.

This should help me out a lot. Now I need to set aside some time to take this all in and begin my lessons. I learn things better if I can listen to the pronunciation so I found this site will help me out. I hope others will be helped by the audio portion of this site.

Hmmm.... I thought the link I gave you had sound files too... Oh well, I'm glad you found a site you like! I like Beag Air Bheag too! After you get a little more Gaelic under your belt, try your hand at translating some of the Litir do Luchd-Ionnsachaidh! They can be found there at the BBC Alba site too!
