I have been recenty reminded that the Mayan calendar ( the most accurate calendar ever ) comes to an ubrupt end on December 21, 2012... I had originally thought it 2014.
I find this interesting in the fact that 12/21 is the first day of winter on modern calendars, it supports the beliefs of those ancient civilazations that this day was a special day to be revered and celebrated... it is indeed interesting that this day is marked as the end of the world by the Mayans.
Any thoughts?

I know that the Mayans were incredibly knowledgable and advanced, more so even than I think we yet know. However, I always wonder if our translations are accurate. So much is still unclear to us, and even some long-accepted theories have been proven wrong recently. I can't help but hope that we have somehow misinterpreted their system again, or that there is another explanation to the mystery.

I find this fascinating too, but I'm not sure why the end of a calendar means the end of the world. Is this someting that was specifically intended by the mayans? I mean, is is stated otherwhere than in the calendar itself?
Is it the mere fact that the calendar ends, or is it the day it ends that has you bewildered? Practically speaking, they had to stop somewhere, right?

The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

Personally - and I'm not the only one who thinks so - I don't think that the world is necessarily going to end come 2012. Just a new age or cycle is going to begin, as this old one is going to end. I feel also that it's going to be a pretty profound changeover, yeah. But the world ending, not really.

That's just my opinion, though.
The new beginning you mention is the "end of what is now known" or to put it in contemporary terms the "end of the world".
I personaly think that the end times are very near and all that are of spirit should prepare and be ready.
I see you are new to spirituality from your age, and suggest you research the elders works.
But might those words (The end of what is now known) not be connected to something? Like society, like technology? I'd go with the interpretation, that a new circle will start. No one knows what will come afterwards and maybe we'll change back to something we already once had and turned away from. And then again, what if the world would explode or something? We couldn't change it, I suppose. So... why worry? It will show

Do get over yourself, Junior. If you assume from physical age someone's knowedge or ability, then you obviously need to get out more. So do lower the level of your nose. I know children that are more insightful than you and me combined, and don't look down their nose nearly as much.
Dear Lord, lest I continue in my complacent ways, help me to remember that someone died for me today. And if there be war, help me to remember to ask and to answer "am I worth dying for?" - Eleanor Roosevelt

My point proven!
I do not refer to me as one of the elders...I am refering to the ancients, the wise ones, those that came before you and I...listen and learn from them.
