When is it constitutional to ban someone's cultural and religious practice? Below is an excerpt from an article on firstamendmencenter.org

Overview >

"Congress shall make no law … prohibiting the free exercise (of religion)" is called the free-exercise clause of the First Amendment. The free-exercise clause pertains to the right to freely exercise one’s religion. It states that the government shall make no law prohibiting the free exercise of religion.

Although the text is absolute, the courts place some limits on the exercise of religion. For example, courts would not hold that the First Amendment protects human sacrifice even if some religion required it. The Supreme Court has interpreted this clause so that the freedom to believe is absolute, but the ability to act on those beliefs is not.

Questions of free exercise usually arise when a citizen’s civic obligation to comply with a law conflicts with that citizen’s religious beliefs or practices. If a law specifically singled out a specific religion or particular religious practice, under current Supreme Court rulings it would violate the First Amendment. Controversy arises when a law is generally applicable and religiously neutral but nevertheless has the “accidental” or “unintentional” effect of interfering with a particular religious practice or belief. http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/rel_li...cise/index.aspx

(User Submitted) – A man wearing "a long black burka over his face" robbed a TD Bank branch in Maryland. He demanded money while brandishing a gun and then fled with an unknown amount. The robber, who employees believe was male because of his voice and build, spoke with "a Middle Eastern" accent, police say. They have released a description of what they believe was the robber's vehicle—and a description of the burka. Read the full article at the Washington Post.

I thought the most humorous part was the end..."they have released a desription of what they believe was the robber's vehicle - and a description of the burka"

All I know is, if my face has to be completely uncovered for a driver's license picture or a passport, theirs should be as well. That's taking things too far.

You're right. A description of the burka???? How stupid is that?

One should be allowed to wear any kind of clothing, but that should not preclude one from having ID photos with one's head and face uncovered and from being thoroughly searched at security points.

One must obey the legal requirements of the country they are in. Here, ours differ from those of the middle eastern countries. Ours prevail here, period!
