Our weather has been mild the entire month of December. Even broke a couple of records. Several days in the 60s to 70s. I would have liked for the grandkids to have snow on their Christmas break, but since they didn't, I hope this mild weather lasts the rest of the winter!! biggrin.gif

Thursday we went to see Eragon with the family (eleven in all). We all thoroughly enjoyed it (ages from 56 to 7).

Has anyone seen We are Marshall?. Looks like it would be a good one.

QUOTE (zeryx @ 23-Dec-2006, 05:17 PM)
Janet what a lovely tradition that is smile.gif

Thanks, Lynda. This year hubby decided that since we all live on the same farm he would put some blankets in a farm trailer, attach it to the tractor and go to the kids homes and pick them all up Christmas Eve. I could hear them singing Christmas carols all the way here! Now the grandkids think he should do it on New Years Eve too! biggrin.gif And another family tradition begins......

Happy New Year, everyone!!!

We have our family gathering on Christmas Eve with children and grandchildren. One tradition we started when the grandchildren were born was to bake a birthday cake and we all sing Happy Birthday to Jesus.

Happy Holidays to all

I, too, want to add congratulations to grandpa Madadh. What a wonderful way to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus, with your very own miracle.

Antonio.. You must be very proud of your grandson. We all need to remember to pray for these fine men and women.

Merry Christmas to all!!

Ribbon Candy and chocolate covered cherries are favorites, but my all time favorite candy is my sister's fudge. She only makes it at Christmas so it's a special treat.

My daughter makes a yummy chocolate cookie with walnuts and raisins that is a family favorite. Mom makes great date nut bars but since she is in Florida this year, I guess we won't get any. sad.gif

Aaediwen...you don't want to give away any family secret recipes! biggrin.gif I had to practically take an oath to guard my husband's grandmother's coffee cake recipe with my life before my mother-in-law would give it to me 36 years ago. Now I am the only one in the family that makes this family favorite. wink.gif

Happy Holidays everyone. First chance I've had to check in for awhile. Got my husband's favorite cake (a coffee cake from his grandma's recipe) in the oven. Only make it this time of the year! biggrin.gif Daughter just stopped in to give her dad a batch of his favorite chocolate cookies, with raisins and walmuts (this one is his mom's recipe). She always makes him a batch at Christmas time. She won a blue ribbon at the county fair with this recipe when she was 12. tongue.gif

CR..in 1998 we took a trip to Alaska. Left home in May and returned in August. It was a fantastic trip. We took RVs, which is the best way to see the country (in my opinion wink.gif ). Maybe you could take a road trip, then you could see both Alaska and Washington state. If you do go, I would recommend spending some time in the Canadian rockies. They are magnificent.

Rindy..yes, it has been hectic around here, but with our family gathering on Christmas Eve, whatever isn't done by now isn't going to get done. I refuse to stress myself out at this time of year. Takes some of the enjoyment out of the holidays otherwise.

Mike..I agree with CR that gift cards are always a good idea. Everyone can take advantage of the after Christmas sales.

haynes..hope the driving conditions out your way are improving and you have a safe trip.

To qwenlee, senara, JP, and everyone else, I wish you all a very
Merry Christmas

Here in south central Kentucky the weather has been unseasonably warm, temps from 50's to 70's the last month. I have mixed feelings about this. I enjoy this weather but since I am originally from the north, this warm and sunny weather just doesn't feel like Christmas.

Hi everyone...gosh, I think I just might be finished with my Christmas shopping! Was out shopping three days this week, with Thursday being the longest. Left home with the daughters at 8 a.m., right after the grandkids left for school. Headed to Lexington to do some serious shopping!! Returned home at 11:30 p.m.! Hubby (bless his heart) took care of the 5 grandkids after school (helped with homework, made dinner and finally put them all to bed). I don't know who was more tired, him or me!! biggrin.gif Friday we went out again and finished! Today we have a basketball game for granddaughter no. 2 and tomorrow granddaughter no.1 has a Christmas play at church. Guess I had better get to bed, at's almost 4 a.m.!!!

G'morning all,

Gosh, its nice to catch up with everyone. So good to know how everone is doing.

We had a great trip to Gatlinburg with the grandkids. The weather couldn't have cooperated more. When we went to the Nascar speedpark, the temp was sunny with temps around 60. The next day when we went outside after ice skating indoors at Ober Gatlinburg, snow was falling and everything was covered in white. It was so beautiful! Hubby had made the comment that the one thing missing from our Christmas trip was snow! The next day was cold but sunny, perfect for spending indoors at Wonderworks, a new attraction that is "an amusement park for the mind". Definitely a must see for all ages.

Rindy...how ya doin? Did you get your Christmas cards out? I finally took mine to the post office yesterday while out doing Christmas shopping. Hubby stayed home and put up the outdoor decorations. We haven't put them out the past few years and the grandchildren asked grampa to put them up, so..... tongue.gif The downstairs family room is a fantasyland with a snow village, a 5 foot singing dancing snowman, the train around the Christmas tree, Santa and Mrs Claus rocking in their chairs, Mr and Mrs Snow Bear dancing and much more. We try to make it as memorable for the grandkids as possible. They love it! biggrin.gif

CR...I am so envious that your have all you shopping and wrapping done. This is the latest I have been and I am still not done with the shopping. Friday the daughters and I will be heading to Lexington to finish up, then we will spend a day together with everyone bringing wrapping paper and ribbons and we get all our presents wrapped at one time. It's a tradition! smile.gif

SB..so happy for you to have your own horse. Don't blame you for not riding your Dancer, I no longer ride either. They are still a joy to watch in motion, aren't they? My daughter's show horse lived to a ripe ol' age of 30, so 23 is just "middle age". biggrin.gif

sisterknight...so sorry for your loss. I, too, lost a favorite cousin recently. Try to let the good memories help you. That's what I am doing.

MDF..hope you are feeling better now.

JP...hope your son did well on his test. How's your Christmas decorating coming along?

Roberto...bet you're feeling a bit lighter now that your research papers are done. Enjoy what free time you have cuz it sounds like you are going to be busy with your Master's thesis. smile.gif

Emeraldeyewandere...how are you doing? Good to see you. biggrin.gif

Serara, Brian, Gwenlee, Ballydun and everyone else......hope you are enjoying the holiday season.

Hi Aaediwen,

Wanted to thank you for all the info. Not sure if we will beable to manage a train trip in the next year or so, but if we do I'll keep all your info close at hand. I have been in Michigan for the Thanksgiving holiday and just returned last night, which is why I hadn't responded to your last post.

Thanks again...

Hi All,

Home again!! We enjoyed our trip to Michigan and the opportunity to visit with family and friends, but it is always good to be home.

Now it is time to gear up for the Christmas season. Hopefully with the grandkids help, the Christmas tree in the family room will be decorated this weekend. Not sure how quickly the rest of the decorations will go up. wink.gif

Good to beable to check in and see how everyone is doing. Have a good night!!

Madladg...so glad to hear that your son is stateside again. Hope he will beable to be with you sometime during the upcoming holiday season.

While visiting my sister in Michigan last week for the Thanksgiving holiday, I saw a poem that my granddad had written and sent home while he was serving in France during WW1. Thought it might be appropriate here....

Somewhere in France

Out in a war stricken country,
Shattered by shot and shell:
Thinking of home and loved ones,
And wondering if all is well
With those we have left behind us,
Who are thousands of miles away;
Oh, what would we give for a letter,
That would bring the good news and say,
That all is well in the home we left,
And everyone feeling O.K.
Out in the rain-sodden trenches,
Watching by night and by day;
Watching for Germans but thinking
While our chums in their dugouts lay,
The shrappnel may burst all around us,
And bullets whizz close to our dome;
But these things all count as trifles,
When we get a letter from home.
So mothers and wives and sweethearts,
And sister and brothers as well;
Just think of the boys who have left their home joys,
For a life little better than Hell.
And when you have time at you leisure,
Around our fair city to roam;
If there is not much in it, just spare then a minute,
And sent on a letter from home.

May we all keep our servicemen and women close to our hearts.

Hi gals,

Finished The Immortal Highlander while we were in Michigan last week. All I can say is that the series just gets better and better with each new book. The local library is trying to borrow the last two from another library for me. I'm going to call them and ask them to order Dark Fever too!!

Hi all,

CR...hope you have a great time at the festival. Be looking for those pictures!

Marti..good to hear from you. Just think of the after Christmas bargains you can get for yourself with your extra money. Shopping..shopping..shopping!!! tongue.gif

ballydun..sounds like you had a great time with your mom. How nice for your hubby and daughters to beable to enjoy time together. Kids grow up so darn fast!!

Keltic..congrats on doing well in your competition! I love to hear of fathers and daughters enjoying time together. So many father's don't realize how important they are their children. My dad was my first hero and I cherish my memories of him.

haynes..boy, this thread is filled with father/daughter togetherness. How wonderful! My daughter just turned 31 and she still wraps her "daddy" around her little finger. Course, now our daughter-in-law does the same thing. Not to mention the two granddaughters. My husband loves it!!! biggrin.gif

Roberto..those pesty creatures just seem to pop out of nowhere, don't they? smile.gif My daughter had the same experience as your wife.

gwen..what happy memories you all made on your trip to California. Never been to Disneyland but have been to Walt Disney World in Orlando. he family is planning a week trip to Florida next October. Hope to take in Walt Disney World while we are there.

Mike..sounds like you have a great idea with your holiday decorations.

Hubby and I are heading to Michigan tomorrow for 10 days to visit family and friends. Heard it was very COLD up there. Had to get our snowboots out.

Hope everyone has a safe and.... Happy Thanksgiving!!
