Music Taste Question, Why the dislike?

Listening to this song, have to wonder what it is that people seem to dislike about it. It's got a rating of less than two, for six votes, and two of those are mine (came up twice today). I really like it, but I must admit I'm a fan of techno and rock, and it seems to incorporate aspects of those in w/ pipes...

One of those votes is mine from a few days ago. I don't love it but I like it.

The only thing I can think of for the lower votes, would be the simple fact that the majority of music played on CR, is the more typical Keltic style music. That is why most of us get drawn in to hang out here.

I try to keep an open mind to most of the music played here and Saul has a lot of potential (in my eyes). He gets a little carried away sometimes and looses focus and makes a mess of things until he gets back on track.


Now, if someone could explain why we are having Aselin Debison jammed down our throats every half hour!!!!???

Agreed. She's ok, but far from great. Aselin is certainly not worthy of a place in my library.

She's nice enough. I'd probably collect that CD and listen to it occassionally... On the other hand, I get a little tired of hearing "The Highwayman" by Loreena McKennit three or four times in a day, for several days. I mean, yes, good enough song, but I just get tired of hearing that particular piece so often. I don't like it that much. It's depressing, and something about that particular piece I just don't find all that appealing.

Now, her Marco Polo piece (I think that's the one) is REALLY good. It's on one of the two CDs I have.

Oh, as for non-traditional... Airplang, by Rodney Miller, has some variations on the more traditional fiddle styles that's really good. One piece has some electric guitar, and there are a few other things you might not have for a dance (time changes, etc), but it's some FINE music. Needs to be in this grouping.

Nice enough song, but the Nickel Creek version is better, IMO. Just a little ... different. Cleaner sounding.

Ok, got another question for you, along the original lines... What've people got against BarleyJuice? Decent music and lyrics, quite fun, very singable. Yet, for quite a while they had one-star ratings. Anyone follow that?

I saw that coming up, and avoided it, and the one before it. Nice, but I can't take them for too long. Not sure why.

Actually, I think I know what it is. If it's a depressing lament, I like to hear the lyrics. Not being able to hear/understand them really irritates me. That would be why Tristan and Isolt and The Highwayman irritate me. You can't make out the lyrics. The vocals obscure the words as they're said. Just the way they sing the words, they get a little garbled. I think that's what I don't like. 'Cause I LOVE laments like And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and I think that's partly because you can really concentrate on the beauty and sadness of the words, instead of having them muddled by the singing style.

If Mike Oldfield ever hears how bad she butchers "Moonlight Shadows", his head would be spinning and he'd be spitting pea soup.

funny, I'd always thought that Gordon Lightfoot was one of the hardest people when it came to understanding what he is singing.

Yeah... I can understand Heather Dale just fine. Hmm. Maybe it's just instrumentation. There is a different quality to the singing in the two I listed that I like and the two that I don't. Odd.
