Background: The surname Browne was first found in County Galway. The first Browne to settle in Ireland was descended from the Counts of Marche in Pictou, in Normandy. Hugh le Brun married Isabel, the widow of King John, and their son, William de Valence was created Earl of Pembroke. Sir Hugh le Brun was one of the Lords of the Marches of Wales. His grandson, Sir William landed in Ireland in 1172 during the Norman invasion, and his son, Fromond le Brun, was Chancellor of Ireland in 1230. From Fromond was descended Sir David who built the Castle of Carrowbrowne in Oranmore. This became the senior branch of the Brownes of Galway.

Variations: Brown, Browne, Brownie, Brownes, Brawn, Brawny, Brunach, le Brun, Brun, Broune, Brune.

More Info: Read Full Family History and view the Coat of Arms

Discussion of this family is welcomed.

THE FATHER
<hr>

by Sir Ronald Ross

Come with me then, my son;
Thine eyes are wide for truth:
And I will give thee memories,
And thou shalt give me youth.

The lake laps in silver,
The streamlet leaps her length:
And I will give thee wisdom,
And thou shalt give me strength.

The mist is on the moorland,
The rain roughs the reed:
And I will give thee patience,
And thou shalt give me speed.

When lightnings lash the skyline
Then thou shalt learn thy part:
And when the heavíns are direst,
For thee to give me heart.

Forthrightness I will teach thee;
The vision and the scope;
To hold the hand of honour:ó
And thou shalt give me hope;

And when the heavíns are deepest
And stars most bright above;
May God then teach thee duty;
And thou shalt teach me love.

To all Dad's today and to the memory of our own Fathers who have passed on...

THE RIVER DRIVERS
<hr>

A Big Congrats to the following member who won a CD in our March monthly CD Contest:

Kent from OH wins the Legends of the Chalice Lead Me Home CD.

Good news, we are restarting our monthly CD contests! Check out our <a href="http://www.celticradio.net/php/contest/celtic_radio_cd_contest.php">June Contest</a> and how to win. This month we are featuring 1 brand new CD donated by the River Drivers.

Philadelphia-based Celtic-tinged folk rock collective River Drivers is a four-piece band whose unique passion-infused style of music draws from Celtic, Americana, and Appalachian influences and features powerful and distinctive vocals.

Influenced by the likes of Billy Bragg, Christy Moore, Ewan MacColl, Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, the Paul McKenna Band and Altan, among many others, their repertoire strikes a fine balance of original songs and more obscure folk songs, resurrected from deep folk vaults.

Anchored by Kevin McCloskey (vocals, guitar, mandolin, banjo, bass) and Mindy Murray (vocals, guitar, banjo, bass) with accompaniment by Marian Moran (tin whistle, low whistle, concertina, melodica) and Meagan Ratini (fiddle, Irish flute, tin whistle), their high energy music explores pervasive themes of hard-working people and social justice.

Our June 2020 CD contest features music from <a class="link" href="https://theriverdrivers.com" target="_blank">River Drivers</a>.

Just a quick update on our Celtic Radio Store.

We decided to close the store last month due to the Coronavirus pandemic and because some of our supplies and inventory became unobtainable. Any orders that had been made received a full refund.

As of today we have partially reopened the store for downloads only. We have a pretty extensive catalog of Coat of Arm products and today you can now order any of our download products.

We probably are going to keep the other parts of our store (clothing and coat of arm products) closed for the rest of the year as we focus on our new website.

We have made available to our premium members the new pop-up player. Thanks for noticing and glad it is working good.

Personally I really like the new popup playing which has direct links for many players, album cover and the song title all in one place. I also believe the sound quality is much better.

Our premium members get three players to choose from:
  • Full Page Player (new)
  • New Player Widget (popup)
  • Celtic Radio Player (old but still works good)
Going premium gets your access to all of our channels in the App and through our desktop. Just another reason to go premium and help us support this site.

We got some great new music coming up in a few days as well as new shows. Whats interesting is that all of the music submission in the past month have been electronic - no CDs in the mail. Times have changed!

Work continues on the new website, but we are not expecting the first release for several months.

Hello AngeliqueMoorman,

Thank you so much for being a supporter of Celtic Radio!

Our player page is just a temporary solution until we have our new popup player widget ready to go. We will work on that and have it perhaps ready soon under our premium accounts.

In the meantime, feel free to use the old popup player which should work on labtops, desktops and tablets.

Here is a link to our public profile page of Highlander Radio using the new streaming servers. This employs the latest version of Shoutcast and widget technologies.

https://jenny.torontocast.com:2000/public/H...HighlanderRadio

I do believe the sound quality is much better with the new technology.

Right now the low bandwidth stream (from the drop down indicated as Stream-64) is not working. We are working with the vendor to get this bug worked out.

My does time go fast. I some how ran across this old thread and realized how fortunate we are to have had and still have members that continue to support the site and listen to the music. I have to say I do miss the days when we had a lot of discussions and traffic. I know that many members have passed on now and it was a privilege to play a very small role in their discovery of Celtic Music.

Who will join the 20 year club I wonder!

So tonight we checked on who was the first member to sign up to Celtic Radio. Jan34 was member # 1 registering on September 29, 2001.

http://www.celticradio.net/php/forums/inde....php?showuser=1

Now there might have been another registration system before that which we converted over but amazing to think we have been running this website for almost 20 years. I think the first version of the website was ScottishRadio.net. In fact the waybackmachine has a few snaps of it from 2001. Attached!

As of tonight we have moved all 7 of our broadcast channels to new servers which will result in any saved links to those channels to cease working.

Please connect using our desktop, mobile or App to be able to properly tune-in.

We are leaving the old servers for Highlander Radio and Celtic Moon running until early next week when they will be shut down.

Our new channel servers are broadcasting in SSL mode so those streams will still work once Google and the major browsers turn off non-SSL streams later this year. These new servers also support the brand new updated player widget we have featured in our news section and will be made available once our new website @ CelticMusicRadio.com is completed.

One new feature we will adding to our App and new website will be lower bandwidth channels for both Highlander Radio and Celtic Moon. For those that do not have 4G phone data or are limited speed, this will allow you to listen without any buffering. We will have links in the App to these special channels probably by tomorrow.

Update on our broadcast channel technology. We are updating all of our channels over the next 2 days. Unfortunately this means the addresses for each channel will be changing.

No worries though, just make sure you access the channel through our App, Desktop or mobile website.

For those of us on Windows 8 or Windows 7 with no intention to upgrade, Microsoft has released a new browser to replace Internet Explorer. Called Microsoft Edge.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/

First tests with Celtic Radio shows good results. Would very much recommend replacing IE with this browser (or other modern browsers) due to security issues with IE.

THE VANISHING

<hr>
Look at the faces of the light keepers Thomas Marshall, James Ducat and Donald MacArthur. These three souls are at the center of a 120 year old mystery that is featured in a film now playing on Amazon Prime called "The Vanishing".

While the film's explanation of how the light keepers disappeared is fiction, their story is not. Flannan Isles is located in the Outer Hebrides off the west Coat of Scotland. It is rumored that the Isles were once used for private purposes by a wealthy family in the 8th century. Later on monks moved to Flannan and built a church dated around 990 (it still stands). By the 16th century the Isles came under the ownership of the McLeod Clan and since 1970 it has been owned by the National Trust of Scotland.

A relief keeper, Joseph Moore, arrived on the Isle on December 26, 1900 to find all three light keepers had simply vanished. He found the entrance gate to the compound and the main door closed and the clocks had all stopped. The beds were unmade and a plate of food was on the table. Extensive damage was found on the west landing where iron railings were twisted and displaced and a block of stone estimated to weigh one ton was displaced. The relief keeper was so upset by what he found, he had to be taken off the Isles.

Over the years many theories have been presented including paranormal activity! Judge for yourself, watch the movie, view the video and do a little research. Certainly an erie mystery that will probably never be solved. <hr>

Right now on the App both "Celt Rock Radio" and "A Celtic Christmas" are using the secure stream (not the widget). Google is basically going to block all non secure streams starting on 1/1/2021 so it is great that we were able to identify a new broadcast package that also has some awesome widget technology.

We plan on updating all of our channels to this new format over the next few weeks and there should be no interuption to our services as we transition to the new broadcast servers.

The new website will be adaptive to your device, meaning it will work on a desktop, labtop, tablet or phone regardless of platform.

Are you still having any problems playing the streams on the Android version of the App?

So along with this new website we are also upgrading all of our broadcast servers to new technology since effective 1/1/2021 most browsers and Apps will no longer let you play non-secured radio streams. (http vs https).

Here is a demo of our new player widget running in secure HTTPS mode widget by itself.

<iframe width="100%" height="330" src="https://jenny.torontocast.com:2000/AudioPlayer/CeltRockRadio?" border="0" style="border: 0;"></iframe>

This will be the player we will use on the new website. We have already upgraded two of our streams and you will not notice anything different while using CelticRadio.net.

Will post a screenshot of the concept for the new website soon. Expectation right now is the new website may be completed mid to late summer.

Thank you Haynes - well put! We do have a treasure trove of music from some very talented musicians. Some of the CDs we have been provided are no longer available or in production.

Our request system is working very good lately and we have recently added support for easy to make requests within our App. Give it a try.

HILLARY KLUG

<HR>
Jack Daniels whiskey may be the most well-known export from the small town of Lynchburg, Tennessee, but Hillary Klug is moving up fast. There are many virtuoso fiddle players on this Earth, and many accomplished professional dancers, but precious few who can do both simultaneously, and that incredibly rare combination has earned her critical acclaim, honors and fans around the world.

We are very excited too! It could be several months before we are ready to release the site. First reactions to our design have been very positive. Hopefully in a few weeks we will release a few screenshots.

The new site is being built on a platform that will allow us to continue to support Celtic Radio for many years to come. CelticRadio.net and our mobile site will continue to be available and function just as they are today. The new site is not meant to be a replacement, but more of an extension and will bring our design and coding up to current.

The new site will be located at this address:

https://www.celticmusicradio.com/

Which by the way has been our plans now for many years owning this web address and offering our Celtic Music Radio bumper stickers now for maybe 15 years!

There's a new scam going around that would terrify most people if it ever landed in their inbox. Please all members of Celtic Radio if you receive such an email then it is highly likely that this is the reason why. Read the article to find out more details:

https://www.businessinsider.com/new-email-s...-bitcoin-2018-7

The emails are slightly different depending on who's being attacked, but they all have a few similar features:
  • The subject line includes a password that you probably have used at some point.
  • The sender says they have used that password to hack your computer, install malware, and record video of you through your webcam.
  • They say they will reveal your adult-website habits and send video of you to your contacts unless you send them bitcoin, usually $1,200 or $1,600 worth.

In reality, they're taking a password from a database that's available online (not Celtic Radio), sending it to you, and hoping you're scared enough to believe their story and send them bitcoin.

Some scammers have even made over $50,000 from the blackmail scheme, based on an analysis of bitcoin wallets, Bleeping Computer reported.

So if you receive such an email, don't freak out. The best thing you can do is just change your passwords and identify the email as spam or junk.

It has been a while without an update, especially with all the focus lately on COVID-19 and in protecting ourselves and staying healthy. So we hope all of our members are doing OK and we thank you for the continued support and use of Celtic Radio!

We wanted to make a little announcement that we are working on a brand new website for Celtic Radio. The new website will not be a replacement for CelticRadio.net, but will function more like an APP and be very focused on tuning into the music and providing rich multimedia experience. Focus will be on tuning into our channels and providing news and information about Celtic musicians and history. CelticRadio.net will continue to be available and will be the location of our extensive online tools and audio functions (i.e. request library, ratings, favorite songs, etc).

The new website will include brand new audio players that will work just as easy on a phone, desktop or tablet. We are super excited about this new technology we will be harnessing for Celtic Radio, and we hope to have some screenshots of the new website soon which looks absolutely beautiful.

While we are developing the new website, our updates might be a little less as we focus most of our resources on this project.

Thanks again for your continued support!

Hi IrishQueen,

Yes we decided to suspend all mailings for the time being. Until we know more about this virus and since we are shipping from Massachusetts which is having a tough time we don't want to risk anything.

We posted the contest results, check out the news page in the forum and you will see the results. Our apologies, a little delayed but so freaked out about the virus took us a while to figure it out between all of the breaking news!

Thanks Ogden, appreciate that!

When you do make a request it actually increases the weight of the song in our database so that it will be more likely to play. So you are helping out the artist get a little more airplay for their music.

Requests on our website are open to all members. For the App, we only allow requests for premium or enhanced memberships. We have built a new mobile request system in the App that is very easy to use.

Thanks for everyones continued support we very much appreciate it. As of today we have almost 10,000 installs of the App. If you want to give us a high five and post a review in Google or Apple that would be awesome!;

SONG REQUESTS

If you would like to request your favorite songs for everyone to hear, then try using our online request system. Search through our library of music either on the website or through the Celtic Radio Network App. If you are requesting through the App we have made it mobile friendly so give it a try!

Requests will play shortly and you can view the song queue for when they will play. All requests play through Highlander Radio, so make sure you are listening to that channel.
