There may not be a lot for me to add to this forum, but this I can say.
Whenever I've lost someone close, they always tend to visit me one last time aday or two later. I will dream of them, and that is where I get to say my goodbyes. Not at the wake, but at night, when they visit my dreams. I remember my grandmother asking me, right after she passed, to look toward the window in thedining room of her house. in the dream I saw a tornado, but I didn't see anything special a day or two later when I was over there and looked. Thought there would have been something. Maybe it was something else she wanted to tell me.

My wife has visitations everytime a relative dies, she knows before the phone call, they all come see her in her sleep.

That is so cool. Such a personal connection.

If society prospers at the expense of the intangibles, how can it be called progress?

O'siyo, Personally, I don't believe there is such a thing as a 'final farewell'~~ I believe we lose someone, animal or person, here on Mother Earth but, they are never 'gone'..Do I believe they 'hang' around, in some cases aye, but, they have already 'done their time' here and it is time for them to move on but, never further than a whisper, prayer, thought or wish~~ Some of the Native American tribes believe that when a loved one 'passes on' that for 3 days the tribe mourns, celebrates, gives thanks and sends many well wishes/gifts to the 'departed'...On the fourth day the Chief, Shaman or Medicine Man or Woman comes to the people and tells them, 'Enough'....our people need to eat, hunt and continue the journey of 'life'..once these words are spoken many tribes believe it a 'wrong-doing' to the departed to continously speak their name for it brings the loved one back from flying with Grandfather Eagle back to an attachement here on Mother Earth and never abeits for the loved one to be at peace because, when their name is spoken it is their duty to come and comfort us...It is a lesson of sorts for us to 'see' them, know they are still 'with' us but, to never be selfish as to forget the true meaning of the term 'departed'.. Tis why I really don't believe in 'final farewells' ~~May this day/eve find you with many blessings and much peace ~Sty-U

The beliefs also go even further...
The spirit of life is in everything and you treat all life as if it were someone you lost in this life... all spirits are connected.
Talk to your tribes shaman.... they will be able to enlighten you more...
O'siyo Shadows, ~ Reincarnation of sorts? ~Everything has Spirit according to Papa Bluefeather, Sioux Shaman/Medicine Man and as you said, 'treat it as such'..the only difference perhaps in my thinking is life doesn't necessarily mean/guarantee spirit~ I know many spirits that no longer have 'life' and I know many people that have life but lack Spirit~ ~Just my two-cents ~~Sty-U

Maybe you think they visit you becuase it's to hard to let go?
Just my personal opinion!
O'siyo dragonboy, ~ I don't believe they 'visit' me persay, instead I believe I 'intrude' on their space, their 'world' so to speak~ In turn 'they' have no choice but to allow me to 'see' them~ I also believe that certain people have an enormous amount of energy that 'spirits' are drawn to~ I happen to believe that I am one of those people and 'spirits' feel comfortable if you will, to carry on with whatever it is they need to do and really pay no attention to me~ I just happen to be around and each tyme I experience such a sighting I feel so blessed! ~~Sty-U

O'siyo dragonboy, ~ For me they just 'happen' for the most part I have on occasion been thinking of them, people or animals, and when I least expect it, they appear in spirit before me..The Native Americans believe, at least my people believe, when we mourn for a loved one being human or animal that if we don't 'get over it' or 'having a difficult' tyme with this 'departure from Mother Earth' their spirit will visit us to let us know they really are 'okay' It's their way of comforting us and trying to assist us with the hurt and tears..many tribes, especially the Hopi believe there comes a point in tyme that we must 'move on' and this usually means not mentioning their name out of hurt for it prevents them from being 'fully at peace' so each tyme that we are having a 'difficult tyme' Grandfather Eagle brings them back to Mother Earth which in turn interupts their 'peaceful journey' so we must get over these 'selfish' feelings and move on..it's truly a beautiful thing, 'death' if you will once the tears and pain subside.. ~~Sty-U
