I was going through an old box of recipes I have and came across this. I totally forgotten about it. These are very tasty, and not very difficult to make.
Aberdeen Rowies
Rowies or "Butteries" are a bit like French croisants but more salty than sweet.
400g/ 14 oz plain flour
25g/ 1oz yeast
lukewarm water
115g/4 oz lard
2 tsp salt
3 tsp sugar
butter
Sift flour into a warmed basin. Cream sugar and yeast in a cup and mix with a little luke
warm water. Pour onto flour and mix well adding sufficient warm water to form a rather
firm dough. Cover and leave in a warm place for 45 minutes. Roll out, sprinkle on the salt,
then place lard onto the dough in walnut sized pieces and fold as for puff pastry. Roll out
(not too thinly), cut into small squares and turn in the corners. Cover and leave to rise for
a further 45 minutes. Put a knob of butter on each buttery and bake for approximately 20
minutes at 230C/ 450F/ Gas 8 until lightly browned. Ingredients
