I don't know what I'm gonna do this weekend, but I know what I'm going to try not to do: go near a suburb of Chicago called Joliet. Because of NASCAR being in town this weekend, there is an overabundance of Winnebagos, black Chevrolet Monte Carlos and mullets. It hasn't gotten as much press coverage this year than it has. Most likely because of the All-Star Game that is gonna be in Chicago at US Cellular Field on Tuesday night.

Speaking of the All-Star Game, I may go on Monday to the FanFest that they are having at the big convention center in Chicago. It's probably the closest I'll get to the All-Star Game. Cheaper too. $16 per ticket and it's all-inclusive (except for transportation & refreshments). I'll probably use public transportation to get down there and a $2.00 off coupon for the ticket.

I had a quite nice weekend with my parents. They 've been visiting Scotland for the first time and travelled round with the train covering the normal tourist route hehe, i.e. Edinburgh, Glasgow, Crianlarich, Mallaig, Loch Ness, Inverness and Pitlochry. While they were staying in Mallaig they came over on Thursday (doing stuff in Slèite, they were at Armadale castle and garden, and then we went together to Knock Castle, a nice ruin along the road to Broadford), and on Friday we did a tour round Trotternish (service bus under a more or less professional guidance dry.gif ), having lived for half a year in Duntulm smile.gif . On Saturday i took the train to Pitlochry , from Kyle of Lochalsh via Inverness (most impressive ride worth doing some time). We had dinner together at the Old Mill Inn and strolled thru Pitlochry to the Fishladder across the hydro electric powerstation. They were greatly impressed by that and the daylight still lingering at 11.00 pm ... On Sunday we went to see Blair Castle, the residence of the Duke of Atholl with his regiment (scotland's only private army). Was really nice and impressive with the luxury and the variety of styles in the various rooms. And then a stroll thru the castle grounds and the Hercules garden which made again a big impression on my parents and their friends with the intensity of the colour of the various flours and shrubs. And it was very hot, too, so they couldnae complain about the weather loool. Then it was good bye as they just caught the bus to Pitlochry while i waited for the train to take me back north .... going home biggrin.gif

The best way I've found to deal with hangovers is a combination of aspirin, sports beverages, and sunglasses. I dunno what you guys have for sports beverages, but on this side of the Pond we have Gatorade and Powerade.

We're going to have dinner with my sister and her family tonight. Otherwise, I don't know what I'm gonna do this weekend. Monday night, I may go to the Chicago White Sox-Cleveland Indians baseball game. I'm a White Sox fan and all Monday games are half-price admission games.

I don't know how it is in your area, but here in Chicago it is GORGEOUS today! Bright sunshine, not a cloud in the sky, and 76º. This is definitely a day to be outside (I say that as I am sitting here inside at my iMac)!

Posted by: Herrerano 19-Jul-2003, 03:04 PM
Hangover treatment, hmmmmmm, not that I would know anything about that first hand, but the best thing is this.

Realizing that 30 minutes of intense pain is better then hours of slow torture, the best thing is to engage in some sort of difficult, hot physical labor where you have to concentrate totally, with all your mind, or something serious will happen like sudden death. Examples would be like changing the transmission in your car, without any of the proper tools; or completely reroofing your house.

Or so I've been told.

I got two cures that will work.. guaranteed =)

First: Drink an awful lot of water and eat some fruit for breakfast.. or like Mike said: sportsdrinks instead of water to replace the lost liquid, then take a hot bath or sauna to sweat out the alcohol. It really helps =) I hate taking medicine if I don't really have to and I totally avoid aspirin, even when I have headaches... I hate that stuff

Second: Soak your brain in alcohol again. that's the festival choice, I love rock and metal festivals and you don't have the time/possibilty to take hot baths or such things wink.gif

Here weather is so 'n so... sunny. rainy, all in one, but quite warm

Today, I stopped at my local liquor store to consider my choice of libations to go along with my frozen pizza dinner and, much to my delight, found one of my favorite microbrews, Point Special. I saw that and was like WOOHOO!!! Next to Corona, that is my favorite! Here is the website: http://www.pointbeer.com

Had ACLS class all day today(Fri). For the nonmedical types, that's Advanced Cardiac Life Support. I am now fully requalified to attempt to restart your ticker if it stops ticking!
Have to work four 12hr shifts Sat thru Tues, 7PM to 7AM. After that I get 6 days off, WHOOHOO!

Posted by: 3Ravens 29-Aug-2003, 10:20 PM
Leo, how are you going to cook that beef? I assume from your title it will be on the grill in some fashion. Do you use sauce, or a rub, or what?

Posted by: free2Bme 30-Aug-2003, 06:55 AM
I plan to spend my entire weekend out here in the pool. I have moved into an apartment building that used to be a hotel in the 50s - very nice, solid concerete block construction (good thing in Hurricane areas) and since it used to be a hotel, there is a full sized swimming pool here. I like to tease and say I finally have my own "cee - ment pond!"

So I will put on my new swimsuit, rub on the suntan oil, baste every 30 minutes minutes or so, turning to lightly roast all areas, to lightly brown this milky white night-shift skin of mine. I sat out a little too long last weekend and wound up getting a bit scorched. I am enjoying working the day shift again. It is tiresome to work with people who are awake and depending on you, but much more enjoyable.

The swimming is working wonders for tightening and toning my muscles too! cool.gif

Posted by: Herrerano 30-Aug-2003, 07:36 AM
Ah ha, cooking the beef. (Actually this is in response to 3Ravens question, but then, it would probably apply as well if one wanted to try it while basting beside the pool. tongue.gif )

A whole filete weighs about 3 lbs. Carefully trim all of the white stringy stuff off (you will need a really really sharp knife) or have the meat cutter guy trim it if he knows what he is doing. Then cut it in slices about 2 inches thick, across the grain. Wrap each piece in good bacon, forming it into that nifty round shape. Make a sauce of butter, red wine, one entire head of garlic smashed (I smash mine with a smooth river rock) and salt. Be sure and let this cool off good, and then soak the meat in that for about ten minutes, being sure to coat both sides with lots of garlic.

Of course none of this is done until the fire is ready. I use the local charcoal which is not compressed or anything and is made from mangrove. I usually start the fire first with Nance (a local hardwood that has small yellow berries and is nice and aromatic), add lots of charcoal since this stuff burns faster then the briquet thingies that are impossible to light.

When all that stuff is done, then put the meat over the hot charcoal just a few inches from the coals, and cook however you want it done. I like mine just barely past the rare stage. (The beef we buy out here is almost all Brahma, which has a little different flavor then Angus, somewhat stronger and definitely tougher, although the filete is always nice and tender, this is all range beef too, even if you can manage to find Angus, which is only raised up in the Volcan area in western Panama.)

There it is, after that, you can throw some mushrooms in the leftover wine and butter and garlic sauce stuff and saute them a few minutes, if you want the sauce a little thicker then just thicken it however you normally would thicken sauce. It is good over white rice with the meat. Or heat it really good and throw in a few prawn or here there is a thing they call camarones del rio (which look sorta like crawdads, but aren't) and serve them as well.

A good salad with lots of olives and onions and tomatoes, and lots of really cold beer and maybe a few friends to munch along with and who can tell you how good it was, and some good music like Dorindo Cardenas or Alfredo Escudero, or Oswaldo Ayala with that neat sounding Panamanian accordian, and it is a perfect day.

Oh yeah, one nice thing is that filete is the most expensive cut of beef down here, it costs $2.49 a lb. biggrin.gif

Leo cool.gif , who is now hungry, and can taste that garlic sauce already.

Posted by: 3Ravens 30-Aug-2003, 02:21 PM
Yummmm, that sounds wonderful. Just what part of the cow is the filete?

Hi everyone!!!! Seems like I haven't been here in a week.
I hope that everyone had a nice weekend. Mine was great! smile.gif Friday my wife and I ate dinner and watched the Bengals pre season game. My wife (jody) is a HUGE Bengals fan.
Saturday, the band headed towards Wheeling, WV to play. ( About 30 mins outside wheeling) Had a great time!!!! The weather was nice and it wasn't very humid. It was nice to be near the mountains again. thumbs_up.gif This group of people we play for are BIG mead drinkers. Boy do they put it away! WOW! Fun people, love to dance!

Sunday I slept VERY late. Since I didn't get home until very, very late. Then me wife and I went shopping for flower bulbs. smile.gif Had dinner at a nice little Mexician rest. and came home watched the firework display that the local radio station has been doing for 30 years to end the summer. It was a really good display, and the soundtrack they had with it was great! Then watched Bowling for Colinbine.

That pretty much wraps up my little weekend.... laugh.gif

Two of my children are in their first jiu-jitsu tournament this weekend. Today was my 10th wedding anniversary which my wife and I spent in the hospital with our youngest child. Kaelan has been in since Tuesday and will hopefully be released tomorrow. So besides the tournament, we are just planning on spending time together.

Posted by: Richard Bercot 02-Oct-2003, 10:21 PM
Aon Daonna, sorry to hear of your Father's delay, I could not tell if was just delayed or involved. Hopefully everyone is OK and will be home with you soon.

Keltic, Congratulations on You and your Wife's 10th anniversary. I am sure you had better plans to spend the evening other than in a Hospital. Children are young and they bounce back quicker than we do. Hope all is well with Kaelan. At least you should not forget what you did on your 10th anniversary, Right?

May you both walk in balance with Creator.

Maggie,
If you have time, try to get to Crabtree Falls. It's beautiful!

Posted by: Keltic 03-Oct-2003, 09:22 PM
Thank you Richard for the wishes. The fact that we were together on our anniversary is what was important. We are already thinking about what we are going to do on Kaelan's 10th anniversary. Never too early to start planning. He was released today and has been given a clean bill of health.

Posted by: Richard Bercot 03-Oct-2003, 09:40 PM
Keltic, I am glad to hear all is well. smile.gif

I understand the time being with the Family.

We, ourselves had a Family gathering. My nephew is heading to Beijing, China on Sunday to teach English at one of their Universities. I think he wants to be a World Rover. Especially since he has been to France, someplace in Africa and Canada. We asked him if was offered a teaching position in Siberia, would he take it? His answer was "YES, IN A HEART BEAT". Well all I can do is wish him Best of Luck.

May you walk in balance with Creator,
Richard

Well, today I am going to an arts and crafts fest and tonight I am going snake wrassling! (thats a a 16 channel, 50 foot snake) Seems kinda pitiful doesn't it? I'm 51 years old, and STILL a roadie! Then I get to sell drinks and tickets and whatever else needs doing, AND I volunteered to do it all, AND I'm having a BALL!
Anybody want to come to Norfolk and hear Pirce Pettis in concert?

I sat out and watched three football games in the cold and rain within twenty hours.... HighSchool, ten year olds and eight year olds. Good thing I love football (that's the American version) Lost two, tied one.... sad.gif
Now, I'm planning on getting warm and staying that way.... Oh, I forgot two baseball make-up games tomorrow morning starting at nine.....
Do I know how to have fun or what? unsure.gif
It's interesting reading what adults do for fun. Been too long, I've forgotten.

Posted by: barddas 04-Oct-2003, 06:12 PM
Well so far this weekend I have not really accomplished anything I wanted to. sad.gif
I did see my niece play football( or soccer) today. She is 5 and a half. It was really a good time!

Now I am cooking, a whole chicken on the grill with peat. ( and listening to cartoon network) Then prob. watch a film, or rugby. That depends on what time rugby is on!!!!!

Tomorrow rehearsal in the morning, and hopefully bulb planting. If the weather holds out. I hope, I hope.... laugh.gif

Mike,
The sound check went OK, and the concert went OK, and nothing squealed, distorted, or fed back, so I guess we rassled that snake into submission. It was a pretty simple gig anyway, one vocal, one instumental and a DI. I can do setups, but somebody else has to do the board. They don't let me play with the knobs and sliders! sad.gif

Hello all...

I've been gone for a while -- several months at least -- but I'm back and I love the new look of the forum.

I'm on vacation! Weekend plans-- After taking part in a Living History encampment on Sunday, I'll be working in my shop on a new piece of furniture I've designed for my dining room.

The music sounds great. Keep up the good work.

Jason,
You know you enjoy being a multi-instrumentalist! You should do an east coast tour, then you to could have your sound setup done by me! Pierce actually had 3 guitars and a couple of harmonicas, and a little A-B preamp thingie on the DI, but it was EASY compaired to those 6 person 25 instument sorts of groups!

Hey where are some of these bands playing?
We have a pub called "Shamrocks" in downtown Macon, Ga that gets Irish or scottish bands occassionally...how about come down here.
We have alot of crazy people who love the music...only problem is they tend to throw the tables to one side and start dancing...it's great! Oh yea, Im not suppose to say that cause you will think I'm crazy too.
We have the Stone Mt Scottish Games the weekend of Oct 17th which is great for their music...
come down to Middle Ga and play for us!

Ok, you're right!!!! I guess it stems from my days playing goth/metal.. I used to bring 9-14 guitars with me each show. Some people call it an addiction, I call it A HOBBY! LOL!!!!!

M'wife asked me why I need so many guitars once. My reply was "simple, each one has it's own voice or sound. And that is needed, in some of the stuff that I play..." She just nodded her head and walked away... LOL!!!

I would love to play east coast!! But, unfortunately, this is a weeend gig when travel is involved. sad.gif I do have the regular 8-5 job too. And playing locally during the week. So to make it really worth while we would have to make a fair share of $$$$ to make ends meet.
But I would LOVE to play around you guys!!!! Put faces to the friends I only ever see typescript from.....

Do you have one of those dibble things that takes out a plug of dirt so you can just drop the bulb in the hole, or do you use a shovel? I was given a BUSHEL (literally) of daffy bulbs and I need to figure out the most efficient way of doing this!

Me wife bougght one of those. They are nice if you are doing rows. Which are *really* neat/nice looking. But I normally use the ol' shovel and put about 6 bulbs per 6 inch deep, 8-10" wide hole. Add a little dry peat , and cover it back up.
I'm really excited to see what pops up this coming spring!!! Since I was able to start with a clean slate after destroying the bushes.HAHAHAHA ( Sauramon like laugh....)

My birthday is March 8th. king.gif I have been fishing on that day for 31 years straight and I don't plan to stop.

Wait a minute Annabelle! I don't want to go to a chick flick. I want to go fishing! laugh.gif

Richard promises that even those of us of diminutive stature can fly fish.
I don't believe him for a minute. wink.gif

But imagine the fun of watching a bunch of anglers on the water, especially those like me who don't have a clue......
THAT would be more entertaining than any film. biggrin.gif

Fly fishing? My Dad tried to teach me and my brother when I was about 10. He put a hula-hoop on the ground at the end of the yard, showed us how to cast, and said when we could hit the hoop consistently he would take us fishing. Well, my 8 year old brother went fishing. I never did. But I didn't practice much either. Should have had a bigger hoop!

! like fishing in the bay off a pier or a boat though. Tried surf fishing, but there's that casting thing again.... rolleyes.gif My favorite pier washed away in the hurricane. sad.gif

You can have my share of it then.

I try to not eat anything raw. I had some sushi once that wasn't cleaned properly and I spent the night and half of the next day doing this---> puke.gif puke.gif puke.gif puke.gif puke.gif .

I know a few people who react badly to seafood even when it's cooked but fortunately for me I can pretty much eat any kind of seafood. My greatest memory was attending the annual mussel festival in Co. Waterford where you got 'em by the bucket biggrin.gif

And oh what a lovely rut to be in, Keltic, but that only takes up my mornings which leaves a lot of daylight to burn......in a manner of speaking....and then comes the cover of darkness. Like Warren Zevon said "I'll sleep when I'm dead."

"The Excitable Boy" is really just taking a very long nap, I'm thinking.

Sounds like fun, Bardass......I used to live on the Upper Mississippi and got heavy into steamboats. I DO miss The River! (When it's not humid or freezing cold).

Out here it's all about Harbor Festivals, Clam Festivals and the like. I think Friday night I'm going to a marching band field competition.......it's not gonna be as in your face as drum corps, but I'm curious as to what is being taught re: field shows. I'll just have to put up with the squeakier instruments.....like woodwinds.

Brass is best!

You, me, and John Phillip Sousa share the same opinion biggrin.gif !!!

What instrument did you play?

I played in the band in school. I was a baritonist/tubist.

I kind of have an idea about how those kids in the drum & bugle corps bust their rear ends. I played two summers in a summer marching band that was a combination of volunteers from two area high school bands-the Brother Rice/Mother McAuley band and the St. Laurence/Queen of Peace band (we had the same director). At the competitions we participated in, I carried around a 30 lb. brass Sousaphone for our 10 minute program. My shoulder hurts just thinking about it.

Today, I went down to the Loop (downtown Chicago) to seek employment opportunities. I applied at a high-end hotel (The Four Seasons), then I went to Water Tower Place (a high-end mall nearby) and applied at Marshall Field's and Lord & Taylor. The only thing I could afford at the mall was lunch at McDonalds. I used public transportation to get down there. That is much better than driving. The rates the parking garages charge down in the Loop, I have two words:

HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!!

Mike, I was a lower brass player, too. Tenor trombone in high school and a couple of college bands and baritone bugle in drum corps. I was the 1966 California State Open Baritone Individuals champ and also placed 4th in National Competition that year. (I can play a lot of instruments, some better than others.)

I'm mostly out of show biz these days, though. I just went "other directions" in life about 1975, but still occasionally do arrangements for brass and, well, other instruments, too. I've played rock bands, jazz bands, even had a few gigs as a fingerpicking guitar player ala Blind Blake and Rev. Gary Davis and Blind Willie McTell, that kind of stuff......had a way cool double-breasted Dick Tracy suit, two tone kicks and a fedora.......old girlfriend named me "Ragtime Daddy." Now I play pennywhistle, didg, whatever I can get my hands on.

Re: your trip to Da Loop......reminds me of that old Steve Goodman song about "The Lincoln Park Pirates!"

When next summer comes be sure to go out and see the Royal Airs Senior Drum Corps and Cavaliers and Phantom Regiment and all those other sweet Midwestern organizations.....and of course THE KILTIES SR. CORPS out of Racine.

If you were a baritonist, then there's a good chance you could play tuba too. I found the transition to be very smooth. The fingering is the same. I just had to get used to reading music an octave lower.

I try to get out and see the drum & bugle corps play. I love watching Phantom, Cavaliers and Santa Clara Vanguard. When I was in high school, one of my bandmates (the director's daughter) tried out for Phantom Regiment (Cavaliers is all-male). I don't know if she made it or not, but if she did, it was probably because of her grandfather, who was a very well-respected bandleader/music teacher in Illinois. Sinatra used to hire him when he'd appear in Chicago. She was an ok player but not good enough to get in on her own.

Mike, actually I am NOT a good tuba player.....my embrochure is not suited for the bigger mouthpieces.....I'm better going the other way into the mid voices (mellophone and flugelhorn) but don't have the chops to sustain lead trumpet work....I leave that to the diva-ates.

I'm sure you've heard the Tubas from Hell CD, eh?

Tomorrow, 19 October, is one of the biggest celebrations out here. A big parade that lasts usually four hours or longer winding through the streets, lots of beer, crowds of people, a rodeo Panama style with one of the funniest bullfights you could see anywhere (here it is a bull tease, more than a fight, and the bull gets to go home at the end of the day to keep procreating). In the night a dance with 'tipico' music, sort of the Panamanian version of country, but the dancing is a lot sexier then boot stompin' boogy. All in all a pretty big day and a lot of fun. Here in this part of the country this will kick off the patriotic celebrations that go on til the end of November. The 3rd of November is Panama's centenial celebration, 100 years ago it seperated from Colombia to became an independent country (and start it's love/hate relationship with the U.S.). Then the 10th is another patriotic holiday to celebrate the first call for freedom from Spain in 1821. And then the independence from Spain day is celebrated on the 28th of November. Lots of days off.

If anyone is interested in seeing pictures of the celebration in Chitré from the last couple of years, http://www.geocities.com/livinginazuero/chitrecelebrates, there are four pages of pictures on that topic.

Leo, who knows this has nothing to do with celtic stuff, except I live here.

Hello all ..
Went on a train ride to see the fall folliage in Oilcity PA yesterday,,
It was interesting, and I was amazed to see the crowd !
They run a few trips a day.. and every car was packed, the open car was allways too crowded to even get out to snap a pic ..
It was interesting.. but a long drive. so today.. just trolling this board , and listening to the great sounds !

Been awhile since this thread has been active.

I just checked the forecast for this weekend. I don't think I'll be going to the Chicago South Side Irish Parade this Sunday. It will be in the low 30s. People who do go either will 1) not be feeling it, if you get my drift naughty.gif beer_mug.gif , or 2) be thinking "forget the beer, where's the coffee?"

The Dunkin' Donuts on 104th & Western will be selling a lot of their exquisite coffee on Sunday.

On a serious note, the parade organizers and Chicago's Finest have done a much better job at curbing the consumption of alcoholic beverages by parade spectators. It used to be pretty bad. I do most of my drinking at home. I may look stupid falling off the couch, but I can't get a DUI for it.
