Hello all,

I'm originally from Indiana, and I joined Celtic Radio in 2005, and would spend a considerable amount of time having lively discussions with people, although I stopped in 2006. I've since moved to Florida and have been listening to Highlander Radio via my Alexa device for a year-and-a-half. This is my first venture back into the forums in quite some time. Hopefully I can start some new conversations and have a good time getting to know people.

Coffee in the mornings, tea only on fall/winter evenings. My wife and I seem to hit the same day for breaking out the tea in the fall, and putting it away again in the Spring. We're both just in the mood until it reaches a certain temperature.

Some of the scenes remind me a bit of northern Ontario -- the water, the wide open spaces. Only without the feeling that there are faeries nearby. Whoever the photographer is must have known what they're doing, despite the disclaimer on the website. Simply gorgeous. I'm putting one of them up as my wallpaper too.

A few favorites for me:

1. Scrubs
2. Family Guy
3. The Office
4. Simpsons
5. 30 Rock

Also, speaking of Scottish television (were we?) I've recently started watching Monarch of the Glen on DVD. I have the first six seasons on DVD, and my wife and I love it.

And for those of you who remember me from 2005, I'm back!! Howdy to the folks I remember, Carolina Scotsman, Maisky, Irish Stepper, etc. (And if I missed your name, I have an excuse -- it's been 2 friggin' years!!)

What most people haven't realized or commented on (not just here, but everywhere) is that Michael Schiavo is the legal guardian in this case. Whatever his motives were, the parents should not have been able to intervene. They could for all kinds of emotional reasons -- love for their daughter, etc. -- but legally, they had no right to.

And don't forget the politicians who sought to politicize the entire affair. The legal counsel for Senator Mel Martinez just resigned yesterday after it was revealed that he was the one who wrote the memo discussing how the Republicans could use this controversy to further their own ends.

Are we getting to the point that no person can make a speech if it makes anyone else uncomfortable? Do all public speeches have to be pressed through a filter and sanitized before the actual words can be said? Are we demanding that Free Speech become Bland Speech? Must our students be sensitive toward issues of sexuality whenever they speak to another student? Is it a bad thing to make another person uncomfortable?

Shamalama says: This is the liberal's Political Correctness run amok.

Hey, don't paint ME with that brush. I may be liberal, but I'm certainly not PC. tongue.gif

I am probably one of the few liberals who truly hates Political Correctness. It has created a sense of victimhood, perpetuated a sense of moral outrage over the stupidest issues, and has created a bunch of panty-waisted nancy boys (and girls) who would rather focus on the NAME of a problem than the problem itself.

What PC has also created is a bunch of people who are afraid to take a stand for fear that they'll offend the aforementioned panty-waisted nancy boys (and girls). Big deal, what are they going to do? Hit us with their man purses? Stamp their little Birkenstocked feet? Not buy a speaker's/writer's book/CD/product? They're so against capitalism and believe in the nobility of poverty anyway, it's not like they would have to begin with.

Or better yet, to couch it in their terms, Political Correctness makes me "uncomfortable" and I have certain "issues" with it. Does this mean they'll stop doing it?

"back in the day when management abused its workers with 16 hour work days, unsafe working conditions, and excessive child labor". ??? That never happened at Delta. That never happened at any of the companies I've ever worked for. Which of the companies that you've ever worked at has a history of such behavior?

I don't think Delta Airlines -- or in fact passenger airlines of any kind -- were around in the 1920s. And unless you're 100+ years old, I don't think you ever experienced the kind of working conditions I'm talking about. Besides, I'm management, so I've never had anyone require that of me.

You should read the history of the industrial revolution at the turn of the 20th century. Read John Steinbeck's "Cannery Row." Read about the history of the labor unions that their reason for organizing. Then you will understand what I'm talking about when I mean 16 hour work days, unsafe working conditions, and excessive child labor. You can't just base the need for unions on your own personal experience. You should understand the history of labor unions in general and the reasons they formed.

Good points, Brother MDF3530, but I highly disagree that it is because of the unions that any of those jobs with their specific employers cause the job to be any safer.

Delta doesn't have any unions (other that the Pilots). Do you fear the work performed by our mechanics? Can you describe the last time one of our wings fell off?

You're missing MY point though. The unions may not make those jobs safer nowadays, but they did 80 - 90 years ago.

So, the unions can't protect their members from themselves, especially when those members are morons like you described. But they did protect the members from management back in the day when management abused its workers with 16 hour work days, unsafe working conditions, and excessive child labor.

But is "offensive" protected by the 1st Amendment? And who gets to decide what's "offensive" - the courts, the state, the fed, the local community, an old lady in Montana?

Yes, "offensive" is protected, to a certain degree.

Adult magazines are offensive to many people, but they're allowed. Racist literature and speeches are offensive to many, but they're allowed.

However, the Supreme Court does make the distinction of "fighting words." That is, if I begin insulting a person to his face by calling him all sorts of racial epithets and he beats the crap out of me, he didn't infringe on my First Amendment rights, because I used "fighting words." However, if I make a speech that makes broad general statements about people of a certain race, that's protected.

It's a fine line and there are many assaults on it from both sides. That's why there are lawyers who specialize only in First Amendment issues.

QUOTE (Shamalama @ 03-Mar-2005, 09:22 AM)
Christopher Simmons later bragged to his friends that they could get away with it because they were minors. Sadly, because of this ruling, they will get away with it.

The Court now strikes down longstanding policies and practices adopted through the democratic process on the grounds that five or more Justices personally don't approve. These people are supposed to be interpreting the Constitution, not balancing it against Europe, or simply going on how they personally feel.

But they're not going to get away with it. They'll spend the rest of their lives in prison. It's not like they'll be released and allowed to spend their lives free.

It's a largely conservative court that made this decision.

You also say that five or more Justices are making decisions based on personal feelings. Did you hold this same view during the 2000 Presidential election and the whole Florida vote counting debacle? It was the same group of justices, and five people made a decision that some could say was based on personal feelings.

There are other instances where the Supreme Court has struck down "practices adopted through the democratic process." (And never mind that they're part of our whole system of checks and balances.)

They struck down Jim Crow laws in the South -- which were democratically adopted -- "separate but equal" schools for children -- which were democratically adopted -- and a host of other civil rights and personal freedom issues that we take for granted nowadays.

So, is it just five people making personal decisions or the highest court in the land trying to make sure that laws are fairly applied and justice is fairly meted out?

Nagging Concerns and Self-Doubt in Indiana
Laughing Stalk syndicate
Erik Deckers
Copyright 2005

It was a sad day for me this past Monday, when I read that Hunter S. Thompson, famed psychotic and drug-addled journalist, took his own life at his Colorado ranch. I've been a fan of the good doctor's for years, and have often imitated his style of gonzo journalism, the art form he perfected over the last 39 years.

Gonzo journalism is a style of writing that blurs the line between writer as a silent observer and story subject, between fact and fiction. It's also known as the Fox News Channel, but I digress.

Thompson's reputation as a writer was outweighed only by his reputation as a hard-core drinker and drug user. Some say his creative genius shone through in spite of, or perhaps, because of his week-long binges and day-long recoveries.

And I like to think that Thompson and I had a lot in common. . . except for the heavy drinking. Or the drugs. Or the penchant for guns. Or peacocks. Okay, we had nothing in common, except that we're both writers and we both wear glasses. And I'm starting to question the glasses part.

So it was a fitting tribute that I found myself in Louisville, Kentucky, his hometown, on the week of his death. And with my column deadline looming, I thought I would make this week's column a salute to Thompson, and his alter ego, Raoul Duke (who was the inspiration for Uncle Duke of "Doonesbury" fame).

But I wanted to re-immerse myself in his works, and reacquaint myself with gonzo journalism, so I could relate the experience to you, the Hunter S. Thompson novice.

The problem was that I left all my Thompson books at home. I needed one to write this column.

So I decided to go on a Hunter hunt at the local bookstores. But I couldn't go to one of the big book warehouses, because he would have probably hated those kinds of bookstores. He obsessively hated all things Establishment, so I shuddered to think what he would have thought if I bought one of his books at a giant book mall. Of course, I never met the guy, so what did it matter?

But still, it was important to the story that I remain true to Hunter's spirit and search for the book with true Hunter S. Thompson panache. So I grabbed my map of Louisville, tore the bookstore pages out of the hotel's phone book, threw the TV out the window, and ran out of my room.

I jumped into my rental car, slammed it into gear, and roared down the highway to find my book. It was 8:00 and my deadline was just two hours away.

I stopped at the first bookstore on the list. I wandered in slowly and looked around. The sign, "New Life Covenant Books" didn't tell me a whole lot about the place, although on further reflection, it should have. There were hundreds of Bibles, religious calendars, and "What Would Jesus Read?" t-shirts out front, so I figured they were having a sale.

I stopped a middle-aged woman walking by. Her nametag said "Bless you, my name is Caroline."

"Excuse me, do you have any Hunter S. Thompson books?" I asked her.

"Hunter S. Thompson?!" she shrieked at the top of her lungs. "The man was an alcoholic, a drug addict, and a sex fiend!!" Caroline's eyes bugged out as she flung holy water on me and began speaking in tongues. I blasted her with a fire extinguisher and raced out. Cries of "Heathen! Heathen" followed me to the car.

That's two minutes of my time wasted, two minutes closer to my deadline. The holy water turned out to be lukewarm coffee and it stained my favorite shirt.

I roared down Bardstown Street, weaving in and out of traffic to the next bookstore on my list. My attorney cackled in the seat next to me.

"As your attorney, I advise you to put club soda on that coffee stain," he suggested. Then I remembered I was actually traveling alone. My attorney vanished. Weird.

The rest of the evening was a 90 mile an hour blur, as I wrenched my rental car from bookstore to bookstore. "Inner Energy Spiritual Life and Bookstore" was no help, and neither was the "Book 'Em, Dano," mystery bookstore. The "Wish You Were Here" travel bookstore was a bust too.

Finally, I came to the last store on my list. It was nearly 10 o'clock, and time was running out. I flung open the door, ran inside, and hollered at the guy behind the counter: "Hurry, I need a Hunter S. Thompson book! I've got a deadline!"

He tossed me a copy of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." It was the movie printing ? the one with a deformed Johnny-Depp-as-Raoul-Duke on the front. I couldn't complain though. They'd had a run on all the Thompson books, and this was the last one.

So I threw some money on the counter, and raced out the door, stopping only to throw a TV out the window. I made it back to the hotel and sat down at the computer. I had the book. I could write the column, and finished it with just a few seconds to spare.

I never did get to reacquaint myself with gonzo journalism though.

The books included were meant to control what was believed and those left out were excluded because the control over the masses could not be with them in!

Rubbish! even a brief, but honest, study of how the Bible came to be would debunk that notion.

Actually, that's correct. There have been councils in the past that decided what books would go into the Bible and what wouldn't. A few books, such as the Book of Thomas, has never actually been proven to be written by the disciple Thomas. That, and it contradicts what the 4 books of the Gospel have said, so it was left out.

Other books were determined to have been written by people from that time, and were "Biblically accurate" (meaning they COULD HAVE been included), but they just didn't fit in with the overall theme of the Bible.

I wish I could remember names and dates, since that IS important to a discussion like this. However, I do remember studying some of this in one of my Philosophy of Religion classes when I was in college 18 years ago.

I was a band geek, definitely. I was also a Target. Several of us were also rather funny (although we were often the only ones to think so). Surprisingly, I was the least funny of the group, and my other friends were funnier.

Nowadays, I'm a successful humor writer and out of my "funny" friends, one owns a tropical fish store, another is a car mechanic, and a third is in prison.

NOW WHO'S THE FUNNIEST?!?!?!

Indiana Store Orders 30 Tons of Jumbo Jelly Beans for Festival
The Associated Press

WAKARUSA, Ind. Jan 18, 2005 ? Thirty tons of jumbo jelly beans would be enough to satisfy even the sweetest tooth. That's exactly what the owners of The Dime Store in northern Indiana are hoping.

The Wakarusa store ordered the tonnage for its 35th bean season far more than the 5 tons of the 1 1/2-inch candies it ordered in 1998.

The store in the town about 25 miles southeast of South Bend began selling jumbo jelly beans in conjunction with the Wakarusa Maple Syrup Festival 35 years ago. That first year, the store ordered 100 pounds and sold them all.

"When we first started selling jelly beans by the ton, people probably thought we had rocks in our head," store co-owner Deb McNally told The Truth of Elkhart for a Tuesday story.

I have been a humor columnist for the Wakarusa Tribune for nearly 10 years. In fact, I just wrote my 500th column last month for them. They gave me my start in humor column writing.

But for as long as I've been writing for them -- and even though I only live 30 minutes away from them -- I have never ever been to the Maple Syrup festival.

But trust me, they'll go through every one of those jelly beans.

This may not be the fix, but I recommend that you do this anyway, because it fixes a lot of problems for people (I work for a computer software company, and a lot of our callers try this and it works great).

Your biggest problem COULD be spyware, adware, and even viruses (virii).

Get Spybot S & D (search and destroy) -
www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Get Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Get AVG Anti-Virus - www.grisoft.com

All of these programs are free and will get rid of (and prevent) spyware, adware, and viruses, all of which could be causing your problems.

Spyware and adware are especially annoying, because they cause conflicts in ways that even their creators don't understand. And if your family members (or you) are visiting websites and downloading software that load these programs, your machine could be riddled with them.

Even if this is not the problem, I still highly recommend that you perform all three of these steps, because they will prevent a lot of future issues as well.

BTW, switching over to Opera or Firefox or Mozilla will also help, because those browsers have plugged a lot of holes that IE leaves open. IE is great for viewing pages with a lot of Java or Flash on them, but otherwise I recommend using one of the other three.

Good luck.
