We have some pretty bad cat allergies and after raising 4 children we always had the pet dog for the kids until our youngest really wanted a cat. She had to have surgery a few years ago so we thought this would be something to brighten up her day.

So we decided to bite the bullet and try a cat out and perhaps maybe our allergies would not be so bad.

Turns out - simply by luck - our new cat friend was a Maine Coon cat and is hypo allergenic because it has hair instead of fur. So no allergies - highly recommended!

A big thank you to everyone that helps support this website! Always amazing to us that every year we are able to make our goal and keep this site going now for 15+ years.

Check-in on the current fund raising stats shows we are about $500 away from meeting our goal. Whats amazing about this years fund raising is the number of donations - really a community effort and one that will have benefits for so many people.

To help get the push to the goal, we plan on offering some special discounts on our Celtic Mandala Calendars and our Celtic Castles hardcover book. More details to come later in the week.

As always we appreciate your support that allows us to continue to run Celtic Radio - something that we love to do.

Everyone have a wonderful rest of St. Patrick's Day - enjoy some Guinness with our music in the background. thumbs_up.gif

We will be performing an App upgrade sometime in April and are taking any suggestions for changes to the App.

Right now we are hoping for more compatibility with new phones such as the Galaxy and the Iphone X. We will also be enabling orientation so the screen will move depending on portrait or landscape mode.

Our vendor will be updating all of the behind the scene code, so we are expecting it to function better.

We have about a month until the upgrade so please let us know anything we can do to make it better.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY

<hr>St. Patrickís Day is many things to many people. For some it is a chance to celebrate their Irish heritage and remember their ancestors. For others it is a great day to plan a party and get together with both Irish and non-Irish friends. And of course many of us simply see St. Patrickís Day as an excuse to drink lots and lots of green beer.

No matter how you choose to celebrate St. Patrickís Day, the history of this holiday is certainly worth examining. The original St. Patrick accomplished much more than ridding Ireland of snakes, and he emerged from his pagan roots to become one of Christianityís best known figures.

2019 FUND RAISING DRIVE

<hr>Well, if you have not heard our yearly fund raising drive has started in earnest and we are already half way to our goal which is truly awesome! Thank you!

Our biggest expense this year was hiring a dedicated account manager for the Celtic Radio App which requires ongoing security enhancements and keeping up with all of the Apple and Play store requirements. We also purchased a new back-up server

As we have done in past years, we like to have a little fun with our donation event by offering "thank you" gifts. We also bundle with donations $20 or more a special coupon code for 1 year of Celtic Radio Premium which includes full access to our app. It really represents a great value and you get a really cool gift too!

This year we have a number of new packages such as our Celtic Castles which is an absolutely beautiful hard cover book with 224 full color pages:

Thanks again for making this website and music channels possible because without your support, we would have closed up shop years ago.

Background: This is a surname of either Irish or French orgins. If Irish it is a form of the ancient pre 10th century Gaelic O'Laimhin, which translates as 'the descendant of the son of the prince', although as to who the prince was is unclear. In the years before the Norman-English invasion of Ireland in 1170, there were as many as nine kings of Ireland, and no doubt at least an equal number of princes. The clan hails from the region of County Roscommon. If French, the name is occupational and residential, describing the ownership of a vineyard, the name being prevalent in those areas associated with wine such as the Gironde and Loire.

Variations: Lavin, Laffin, Laffan, Lavin, Lavine, Lavins, Lavan, Laven, Lavens, La Vigne, Leaven, Lavenn, Lavenu, Laveny, Liaven, Lavena, Laeven, lavene, Lauven, Laveen, O'Lavin, Hand, McGlavin, Glavan.

More Info: Read Full Family History and view the Coat of Arms

Discussion of this family is welcomed.

HAPPY ST. DAVID'S DAY

<hr>
Saint David was a Welsh bishop of Mynyw during the 6th century. He is the patron saint of Wales. David was a native of Wales, and a relatively large amount of information is known about his life. However, his birth date is uncertain: suggestions range from 462 to 512.

St. Davidís Day is celebrated on March 1st across Wales and the wider world. But who was St David? What was he famous for? And in which Shakespeare play is a character forced to eat a leek in his name?

Thank you for the feed back on the tshirts! Yes - we try to provide a good product and we have many years of experience with our presses.

The Fund Raising is delayed this year, mainly because of a number of behind the scenes technology upgrades that have to be done to support the site.

Will have more details soon, we have a new donation package that we think is going to sell out fast.

Thank you very much for your loyal support! It is much appreciated. We are up to about 367 CDs given away over the past several years. That does not include when we had a more manual system, we have probably found homes for these CDs maybe 1,500.

We should be starting our fund raising event soon this month. We have a new hard cover book on Celtic Castles that is surely going to sell out fast and some other cool packages. Hopefully will have up soon for added selections!

Thank you again!

AULD LANG SYNE

<hr>
In celebration of the New Year we will be playing 8 hours of Auld Lang Syne by the immortal Robert Burns. Tune in on Highlander Radio to hear this Robert Burns festival of his most famous poem and have a Happy New Year!

So you don't understand the Lyrics?

We twa hae ran about the braes,
And puíd the gowans fine,
But weíve wanderíd monie a weary fit
Siní auld lang syne.

Then read on...

The end of a year often signals new beginnings Ė gym memberships and dating apps see an uncharacteristic surge in sign ups Ė but one thing that has never, and will unlikely change, is Robert Burnsí Auld Lang Syne. Itís pretty much accepted that most donít know all the lyrics, but does anyone really know what they mean either? Here is a breakdown of each verse and chorus in the original 18th century Scots along with its translation.

Yes Virginia...

<hr>
Eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York's Sun, and the quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history's most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.

A stunning collection of classic tunes, performed by a talented, passionate ensemble of quality musicians.

Itís that time again! As we get closer and closer to Christmas, there is always room for more holiday-themed songs in my playlists. Iíve always been a big fan of how Celtic music intertwines with Christmas vibes. It is almost as if the ancestral, timeless feel of folk music has something in common with the spirit of these holidays, and there is something special about this combination. With their most recent release, The Selkie Girls did an amazing job at capturing this very special feeling....

TRAVEL MUGS

If you are looking for a unique gift for that someone special, consider one of our Coat of Arms products in the Celtic Radio Online Store.

Our newest product is the white steel travel mug. We also offer silver steel travel mugs, but the new white steel provides for 100% full color Coat of Arms. The silver steel travel mug does balance with the steel making for a lighter design. Both products are great gifts.

An example:

The Coat of Arms image above was actually created using a photograph of an old silver badge of the arms from the 1800s. The customer could not find this Coat of Arms anywhere using a number of online services, so we recreated the image using a photograph of the old artifact:

We offer free Heraldry Consulting if you are interested in uncovering your family's Coat of Arms. We can research your family name and also recreate any Coat of Arms from old photographs or pictures.
