I was watching a show last night called Any Day Now. For those of you that don't know it heres a short description. Its about the lives of 2 women, one white and one black that have been friends since they were 10 yrs old. They grew up in Alabama in the early sixties (if I'm not mistaken) and have dealt with a lot of things especially racism. It really is a neat show. Anyways the black woman is a very well know lawyer (in the show) and she took on a client that was getting fired from her job as a teacher because the school board found out that she was a Wiccan.
Now my question to you is, If you found out that one of your childrens teachers was a Wiccan, BUT shows no signs of it and doesn't talk about in class what would you do?

It makes no difference, Wiccan, Satanist, Christian. Regaurdless of faith, I have seen many teachers that wear crosses while teaching. What would be wrong about a pentagram, or goddess symbol? Or any other type of "religious symbol".
It *shouldn't* even matter. Everyones religious preference is thier own. So the question of "what would you do" is really void. In my opinion. I could care less if my childs teacher worshipped a paper clip! LOL! But seriously, childern are there to learn from teachers. What they believe is no parents buisness. And if it is, send your child to a Catholic school or equivilant.

Invite her to dinner. I am much more concerned about the persons teaching and personal skill than her religious beliefs. We moved around a lot as my kids were growing up. They were exposed to teachers with a variety of religeous leanings (Mormon, Southern Baptist, Catholic, etc.). We monitored what was being taught in the classroom and talked with the kids about what they were learning. Usually when the teacher was laying the religious stuff on too thick, it was better to talk to the kids about it and about their feelings to counter it rather than to confront the teacher. More effective, especially since the population in the area normally reflected what was being pushed at them. The learned to think for themselves and let "indoctrination" run off their backs. Compared to some of the "Christian" stuff they encountered, Wicca is pretty innocuous stuff.

My only problem would be if the teacher is teaching their religious views in the classroom its self. While in the classroom, or in the role of teacher, they are there to represent learning. And from my point of view, learning needs to be things that stimulate the child to think. I don't mind different religious beliefs, in fact its one thing that makes people so unique, but I wouldn't want my child deciding on their religious walk just because they might curry favor with a teacher.
Now, if the teacher was leading a prayer to the goddess every morning before class, that would be something to reprimand, but if the teacher was just minding her own business and someone found out and pitched a fit... that's discrimination based on religion - which is unconstitutional.

I would do nothing!! If this teacher was not teaching wican beliefs in class. If this teacher was teaching religion of any kind in public schools that would move me to action.

I have got to agree with most of the people here. Religion has no place in a public school classroom, so why would it matter what the religion of my child's teacher is?

We wouldn't worry about it, either! We've always concentrated on the teachers' effectiveness in class, to their interaction with the students, and their overall demeaner with our girls. Their religion has never come into the picture, and shouldn't! It's really not an issue that needs to concern us.

P.S. Besides, I usually find Wiccans to be gentler people on the whole.

I don't like it when teachers try and imprint their religious views on those they teach.. I went through 13 years of catholic school, and they did it everyday. Which is probably how I developed my chritical stand towards all religions. May it be Chrisitan, Wiccan, Islamic, Buddhism or whatever. But when you send your child to a religious school that is what you get. The best schools in my area were Chrisitian schools. And then, alas, Religion and religious groups and oppinions seem to be a topic which makes people get angry very easily *shrugs*
As long as we respect basic human and moral values which are recognised all over the world, why should I care what religious background the man standing next to me, or the woman sitting on the bus next to me, has?

I forgot to add: there was quite an uproar about a young turkish woman (muslim) teaching in a primary school not too long ago (in Germany). She wore her (sort of broad scarf worn on the head to hide the hair.. how is it called?) in class and that sort of annoyed the parents of the children. She was forbidden to wear this in class by a court. She definitly did not try to influence those children, she just lived her religion as she was brought up.
Then a bit earlier there was a discussion about crosses (the catholic version with Jesus hanging on it) hanging in public schools in Bavaria, and parents battling in court about if it should stay or not.

What if I found out my childs teacher was involved in wiccan? i'd know I was in America. Christians arent allowed a point of view in this country. Worshipping a "paper clip" doesn't get you titled a religious radical.
What if I found out my childs teacher was involved in Wiccan? Id know the school taught "diversity" NOT "Unity"
What if I found out my chids teacher was involved in Wiccan? How can I find this out unless the point had been made? You cant even find out if your next door neighbor is a convicted sex offender in most communities.
What if I found out my childs teacher was involved in Wiccan? Ask them if their faith is innoccuous to them. Id say not.
What if I found out my chids teacher was involved in Wiccan? Id ask this person if they have the answers on how to stop teen pregnancies, pill-popping, dope-smoking, gun-running Id ask if they knew how to give our children a strong sense of self tied to self esteem. Id ask if they know how to put shame back into our lexicon along with personal responsibility. If they truly knew the answers, Id know they were Not Wiccan
