Man uses Barbie fishing rod to make record catch

ELKIN, N.C. — David Hayes' granddaughter just asked him to hold her Barbie rod and reel while she went to the bathroom. He did. And seconds later he landed the state record channel catfish at 21 pounds, 1 ounce.

Alyssa's father had bought the pink Barbie fishing rod for Christmas and she had caught a few bluegill before her grandfather hauled in the catfish.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported the catch Aug. 5 in eastern Wilkes County has been certified as a record by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

Hayes and his granddaughter have been fishing in the pond behind his house since she was big enough to hold a pole.

Hayes said his granddaughter worried he would break her rod. He landed the 21-pound fish on a 6-pound test line. It was 32 inches long, 2 inches longer than the rod.

I have never tried fly fishing but I have gone bass fishing. To me there is nothing as delicious as fresh large mouth bass to eat.

Losing my dad at an early age and a brother who was 10 years older than me, I did not get any experience fishing when I was very young. But when I met and married my husband the fishing began.

In my training years, I was in the middle of the boat and did a very nice cast into the lake but my lure didn't go into the lake as I expected. I wondered what happened to it and looked back to see it buried in my husband's neck.

Newly married, my husband was sooo brave not to shout and howl. We couldn't get the hook out because it was buried too deep, so a trip to the emergency room was necessary.

Yes, my husband does still take me fishing and I have outfished him sometimes!

I too love fishing and use to do a lot. I found that when going for the big ones dynamite worked best. Got some really big Arctic Char out of Hudsons' Bay one year. Good thing the local R.C.M.P. Constable was with us to sanction our activity as after we kept 4 for ourselves gave the other dozen or so to the local Inuit village.

My husband was reroofing our house. As all wives do, we start praying when our husbands take on such jobs that might require the ambulance.

Sure enough I heard a large wack and thought for sure my husband fell off the roof. Running outside and looking around there was no husband on the ground and he was looking up in the sky.

It seems a large osprey had a large shad in his grasp but fighting the wind become to much for him and we were blessed with the fish.

I fish regularly with the Grand kids. You can make it as relaxing or as vigorous as you wish. I like fly fishing but am not as steady in the water as I once was.

All true civilized people love to fish, right? And those of the highest spirituality love to fly fish. I've always loved that line from "A River Runs Through It" where he says, "There was a fine line between religion and flyfishing in my house."

I used to try other kinds of fishing when I was a kid, but I didn't really know what I was doing, so I got bored of it and went off and played. Then Dad discovered fly fishing, and I happend to mention once that it would be interesting to learn how to do it. For my next birthday he presented me with an eight and a half foot, six weight fly rod that he had made just for me. I've been addicted ever since, though I still don't much know what I'm doing.
