Just wanted to let everyone know that my son has landed in Kuwait. His unit will follow shortly. He has followed in a proud Irish tradition of going to a foreign land in the service of his country.

He left Alaska on Sunday it was a balmy 57 degrees. He says it is slightly warmer in Kuwait (113 at last check).

You may feel free to hold you head up high--with great pride and self worth. You have a fine boy on your hands, and my hat's off to you sir for a job well done in raising such a man!

There are some in this country, the number of which grows daily, that don't seem to understand what great a sacrifice many of us make in service to our country, and for those who are under our flag that oppose us. The service comes from pride, the willingness to put a life on the line for a stranger comes from love, and the determination to stand and face those who wish to destroy us comes from honor.

Pride, love, and honor; your son has all three.

The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

Madadh, I live in Fairbanks and I am assuming that your son is a member of the 172nd Stryker Brigade, in process of deployment to the Iraqi theater. The members of the 172nd have been described as being "Fit, fierce and formidable". Major General Charles Jacoby, speaking to the troops during their deployment ceremony said "You are fit, strong, confident, worthy of your families' and nation's pride, worthy of your commander's confidence, and worthy of your enemie's fears."

The turnout for the ceremony by civilian members of our community was considerable, a strong show of support for the young men and women we consider to be our friends and neighbors, and every bit as much a part of our community as the crustiest of "sourdoughs". I wish your son and all of his comrades Godspeed and safe return.

Thanks Guys,

Yes he is part of the 172nd. He was stationed in Anchorage.

He is from a long line of Wild Geese. We have served since before the Civil War.

They really are great looking kids. And strong-minded too, I bet, growing up with those huge hounds for playmates. smile.gif

May they do their job well and come home safe and sound.
