Does anyone have info ( books, web sites, etc. ) that delve more into the oil and candle magick ? I have been gathering info for several years but there seems to be a void .....somethings not being shared!

Buckland has a few, but I am sure you have those, right? I will be on the lookout.

Yes I do! Here is another one that has "some" good info, but not as complete as I am looking for. The medicinal ointments from this site are grand!

Scott Cuningham (sp) did a book called " Insences,Oils and Brews". It has many "recipes" for making home made insences, oils, tinctures, salves and stuff. It was originally published by Llewellyn. Good reference book. It will help with getting started in making them, and then you can start developing your own.

I believe he did a video to acompany the book. But, it might be his book on herbs that he did the video for.... HHmmmm

I'll try and find out...

cheers!

I will have to check these out. Candle magick just came naturally to me, so I never really checked it out. I can say it is a very effective method.

I was just thinking that the votive candles lit in catholic churches are a nice parallel to candle magick for those who are curious.

Ray Buckland also has a candle magick book. It's alright. It has many rituals, and how to guide lines. It also is published by Llewellyn. Just keep away from his 1970's book chant-O- matics!!!
Seriously a real book!!! huh.gif ohmy.gif

Well we digress... smile.gif

back to topic...

I have used candle magick for many years, but still can not find any good info on the combination of the oils with the candles for bringing about the desire results... I have had much success using oils alone, but ... ?

I make my own candles from pure beeswax and have an extensive assortment of oils, it seems to be the impowering step to the candle that I lack.

Any suggestions?

how are you anointing it?

At alter with it mixed with olive oil... cleansing my mind and trying to impower the candle with the oil's powers. I rub the oil onto the candle and invision the power flowing from the oil to the candle...

I can not say I have not been succesful but it does not seem to "take" most of the time.

With the oils alone, annointing myself or others it works well.

Is it just not "feeling" right?

Posted by: Shadows 25-Jul-2003, 11:46 AM
The feel seems right ...it just not seem to do what it is supposed to do...could be I am just used to the oils working on direct contact instead of through the candle, is there a decline in the powers using candles?

Posted by: RavenWing 25-Jul-2003, 11:55 AM
Well, I believe that magic(k) comes from inside you. The candles, etc are just a way of focusing and concentrating what is coming from within. So I am thinking that may be you need to make sure your intent is focused as well.

Does that help any?

Posted by: Shadows 25-Jul-2003, 12:03 PM
That is my belief also. Guess I just need more practice with the candle/oil combination. Like I said the oils and I work well in everything but candles.

Posted by: RavenWing 25-Jul-2003, 12:04 PM
Well, if it ain't working don't use it wink.gif

That is easy enough to say but I like to share and candles are one way to do that for friends. I guess I just need to work at it more .
Thanks

Don't ever make excuses for moods or feelings, they are real, you should go with them always.

I know I've entered this a little late.. BUT tongue.gif

I agree that the candle is just a tool. As is a wand, or any other impliment. Is it a must have? I don't believe so. But sometimes we all need something physical to focus on so that the "energy" can flow.... Does that make sence....

What ever makes you feel comfortable, and gets the right mood for what you are trying to achieve. That is what is right. Could be a bic pen, whatever....

This is the first time I'm reading this, so maybe I'm missing some thing here. I agree that the intent is really the most important part. You said you visualized the power flowing from the oil to the candle. What did you do to empower the oil?
Also oil and wax are not that different in properties. You could try visualizing the power of the oil melding with the power of the candle, instead of flowing into the candle. That way you have the strength of both.

Aside from your intent, perhaps you should be working with oils that correspond to the colour and type of candle you are using?

Maybe its the correspondences you seek? Agrippa's Three Books would be helpful, and Culpepper gives correspondences in his books for various herbs, which you might consider mixing with the oils to align better with the candle.

You could also try Michael Howard's book, "Practical Candle Magic".
