What ever will happen to the poor girl? Will she have to wear an orange jumpsuit too? It's really not her color. Will she get prison tatoos??? Will she hit the weights and come out all buff? Will she teach others to make shivs out of eyebrow pencils??? Will prison food under go a rebirth??????

I can just picture now the Cells all being spotless with handcrafted items on the walls. wink.gif They would be growing their own Fresh Vegetables to boot.

I hope she wins on appeal..

Yeah she lied.. like Wall St. is squeeky clean..

But let a football player kill his wife, and he get's to play golf..

Personally, if I had a lot of money invested into the Market and I hear that the shares are going to drop. Wouldn't I want to save as much of it as I could or should I have just sit there and be stupid and let myself go broke? These people are in there to make money, not loose it. Duhh. Where are their minds at? Were they one of the people who just sat on their hands and lost their money and are now upset because they didn't think of it first? unsure.gif

Maybe she can get a pardon from Betty Crocker

BINGO ! Richard ..

Not to sound like a feminist, but shessh, they say shes aggresive in bussiness..
Ever hear anyone say that about a man like its a fault?

*sigh*
The lack of compassion I see towards her makes my heart sad...

I guess it is because I think the took what was truely the OLDEST profession
in the world, housekeeping... no one just never made money from it before..
and raised it to something a woman could take some pride in..
As opposed to just being a homemaker...and what society used to think of that..
No she did not give off a warm and fuzzy vibe, but she made an amazing bussiness for herself.. I'd rather have her as a role model for my neices,
than Brittney Spears..

Just my two pence..

You're right Paula.
She just exhausted me and made my look at my house as a dump. sad.gif
I haven't followed the court case. I have to believe whatever she did, many others do as well. We watched Wall Street agian not too long ago. The lines between legal and illegal do seem a bit fuzzy, but that just may be because I don't understand the process, not having any money myself to invest. rolleyes.gif

Oh Elspeth !
oh dear.. that was not ment for you at all !
I KNOW how compassionate you are ...

I know she was taxing, and terse !
NO woman alive could have the hours in the day she did ,
or do it as well..
we don't have a crew to do it all for us ..

I loved to poke fun of her too..
All the , set the table with the silver you mined and then crafted this afternoon
on the flax table cloth you wove, this morning ...

But if you stripped away that ..
I loved the simple message behind it..
Put a few daisys in a jelly jar, and get your family around the table!
And be proud that you keep a house,,
Its WHOS in a home, not WHAT smile.gif

I just love the underdog I guess..
and hate to see her being punished for something men do every day ..
I just want to see women pull TOGETHER not APART ! smile.gif

regardless, Who ever you are, Break the law and you pay for it. And I know of a few who have gotten away with murder literally, Because investigators made mistakes or tried to "fix the evidence", but still they broke the law. I don't believe she will spend any time in jail, at all. I betting on 5 to 10 years probation.

Posted by: Richard Bercot 08-Mar-2004, 03:47 PM
I have heard estimates of 20 months. unsure.gif A lot better than 20 years that she could get.

Posted by: RavenWing 08-Mar-2004, 04:04 PM
She may get time in prison, yet The guy from Enron got away with everything. It is NOT right.

Then there is the other athlete being tried for killing his chaufer. Which he tried to make look like a suicide. The judge refused to allow a previous arms charge shooting at a security gaurd, and also killing his own dog on his porch then telling a teammate to get rid of the dog or he was next.

don't even get me started on corrupt businessmen that the government refuses to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. I have said it before and I will say it again random prosecution of the law is a total corruption of the law and it might as well not even exist. They congradulate themselves and pat each other on their backs for not letting MS get away. They couldnt even convict her on the charge just perjury.

Peckery..
For the record she never held a lisc ....
She sold stocks, so do I , daily when I trade as a private person..
Thats what blew a hole in the entire inside trading charge..

I've followed this case with interest, simply because Mrs Stewart's married name is my family name (someone told me she was Polish?)

She has never been popular in the UK - I have never seen any TV programme she has made - although someone here told me that one of her shows is on one of the minor cable channels here.

I think it's wonderful that someone should be able to make a fortune just showing people the 'nice' way to do things....! cool.gif

Posted by: Arianrhod 08-Mar-2004, 05:33 PM
She did work on Wall St. Selling stocks..
She never held a brokers lisc... or take the board to do so..
She was Polish, and from Nutley NJ...
from good pesant stock..
from a hard working set of parents..
When I look at her back ground..
I understand why she held on to money so tightly...
It was a DUMB mistake...
She got caught..
And I feel she is being made an example of ...

I think that covers it ! angel_not.gif

Actually Paula, she was fameous and made a mistake. Martha Stewart is someone you either love or hate. The conviction oonly upsets the half that love her. I find her annoying, but I'll wish her well, and keep her in my prayers.

She did the crime, and will do the time.
I can't help but wonder, though--is she being sacrificed to/by the Wall Street gods precisely because she is an uppity womanfroma peasant background?

I hate to argue with you, but what does it matter that she's a woman? And how do you know that there aren't a lot of women engaging in illegal trading activity every day? Please don't make this a sexist issue. She screwed up. She broke the law and should go to jail just like you or I would.

Posted by: Elspeth 09-Mar-2004, 10:58 AM
Hey Paula!
I love that part about using the silver you mined int he morning on the linnen tablecloth you wove in the afternoon from flax you had harvested the day before. biggrin.gif

But, if she was from NJ, she's an American not Polish. laugh.gif (sorry, in the mood to pick silly nits)

She was found guilty and she should pay the price, but the point raised by birddog is so valid. Random prossecution is so wrong and often has the appearance of a witch hunt. Not, implying that Ms. Stewart is a witch. rolleyes.gif

Posted by: tsargent62 09-Mar-2004, 11:22 AM
Is it really random prosecution? The only reason we know about the case at all is because of the notoriety of the defendent. I would be willing to be that there are far more cases of this than we know about. And I'm sure that the SEC has its hands full just trying to keep track of the billions that change hands on a daily basis. So the fact that we don't see people being prosecuted for insider trading doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

I'm a member of the "do the crime, do the time" chorus.

It can be argued that the only reason so many wanted to see her WALK is that she's famous and a woman. Had this been a regular guy, and having done exactly the same thing, he would have gone to prison quietly without anyone shedding a single tear.

If anything the "rich and pretty" should set examples so as never to become:
- randomly prosecuted
- sacrificed to/by the Wall Street gods
- being made an example of

Either way, good or bad, this trial is simply a media "flavor of the month". Six months from now we'll be discussing something else and most won't even remember Ms. Stewart.

Posted by: Elspeth 09-Mar-2004, 01:57 PM
I think the feeling of random prosecution comes when there are so many other 'celebrities' who never face prosecution at all. All high profile cases. All the media circus flavor of the months.

All these many months and I'm STILL ill about OJ. Such a travesty.

And I want Martha to understand that she did wrong. I do wonder if she comprehends this, or does she think that she is somehow above such mundane things as the law?

Any one with their right mind would bail if they found out their stocks were worthless and had a chance to get rid of them they would do it.

Now as to having someone on the inside to tell us is where the difference lies. We don't have that advantage that rich folks do.

But the moral of the story to me is, don't put all of your eggs in one basket! Spread them out and diversefy!

That is the safest way for anyone.

I'm going back to my valut and start counting my money again, sorry have to go!

Poor Martha. You've got to feel sorry for her.

She only has 5 or 6 million left after the catastrophy....

Get real, You lie, You pay! Still hurts. But to openly say her employee's are gonna hurt too is uncalled for. They are the normal people who have had to jump thru a hoop for her for sometime. Maybe this will give them a fresh beginning. I know all job lay off's hurt no matter what the cercumstances around it. Hopefully they will have sterling credentials and have a new job before she comes out of jail.

Dear sista girl, that is what makes this story so sad. Even if she would of taken a total bath on her Imclone stock, she would of lost only 3% of here total wealth. To risk it all for 3% when she new better is the act of a person who thinks the laws don't apply to them. king.gif

Certainly wasn't worth the risk if it was only 3%. How much does it affect her now that she has been prosecuted?

I find Martha Stewart a very arrogant person. Yes give her snaps for building an empire on housekeeping methods but when you do something you know is wrong, stand up and take responsibility.

Her quote was I will not spend any time in jail. I hope that they stick her with the max. No one should be able to get away with breaking the law. No matter who you are or who you b^&#w.

No regular Joe Schmo would have why should someone who has money be able to.

Just my opinion.

Go to jail. Go directly to jail. Do not pass go. Granted, others have committed similar crimes and weren't caught. That's rather like trying to argue with the cop writing your speeding ticket that others were driving faster than you were. Tell it to the judge - he'll just remind you that you can't catch all the fish in the sea.
