QUOTE (scotborn @ 04-May-2008, 09:31 AM)
I think it is arrogant of christians to think that god is on their side. How do you now he isnt on the iraqis side. After all it was our countries that invaded them. Not the other way around.

God doesn't choose sides, we do. Our only job while we're here is to be loved. Some folks don't know what that means, and that's why they went to Iraq. It's not about some conquest of conversion, it's about loving people because they're worth it.

I have read the whole thread and the articles, so this may be a somewhat tangent comment. And at the risk of attracting the ire of both sides of the political isle and most of the western world let me ask a few questions...

What war?

Where in the world is there a flags in front, bugles in back, sabres up, and boots down fight going on?

To these questions I would reply, in reverse order;
"Nowhere"
"Oh, you mean the mafia style, gangland violence perpetrated by less than 0.1% of the resident population against any and all of their political rivals including, but not limited to, the United States' military?"

You see, I too have friends who have been over there, or are still there. I've been forced to attend two of their funerals. All of them have had the same observation about Iraq. Independent of our motives for going over in the first place, they have all said that the US military is the wrong tool to fix Iraq's problems. In the words of one, "It's like curing cancer with a blowtorch." I can only imagine what he meant.

Iraq doesn't need George Patton.
Iraq needs Elliot Ness.

(BTW...the draft is a terrible idea that will never be done well in a society that values the individual over the state, and no matter when we leave Iraq, the pooh is going to hit the fan.)

Thank you everybody. I didn't include much information in the last posting because the IMB is worried about what information gets out over the Web. I can now tell you that Donna Beth Clark and those with her did get in contact with US forces and managed to escape to Jordan. They are due to return to the US this weekend.

I used to live in Dallas, and you're right about the North Texas Irish Festival. We have a Scottish festival here in Tulsa late in the summer. I was only able to attend literally the last two hours, and by then everybody was pretty much packed up. So I really don't know how that one is.

A member of our church and several others with the International Mission Board (IMB) have been serving as translators in Iraq on a rotating basis for some time now. With the uptick in violence, they are currently trying to evacuate, but between the military curfew and the sporadic running gun battles (one of which was on their street on Saturday) they have not been able to get out. They don't have a car, but they've contacted US military forces and are hoping for an escort early this week.

I really can't give any specifics, but please keep our missionaries in your prayers.

His will be done.

I conquered the hill this morning!
My new seven mile route includes one of the big hills in south Tulsa. It's a 4% grade for about 3/4 of a mile. For you math geniuses out there, that means that the hill is about 160 feet tall.

Anyway, I think that the 24 miles a day that I'm working towards is looking promising!

...Besides I have to boil and color some eggs...

That's awsome!
We did that tonight (before the 4 lagers that I'm typing through), and my 3 year old about lost it when I took one and purposefully tossed it up and let it fall on my head. In total, I think we sacrificed about a dozen boilded eggs in our first family food fight!

Hey J.C., I still haven't watched the movie. Like said, I should get some free time this weekend.

As far as the tower coming straight down, I want to leave this image in your mind:
Stand up with you knees and elbows almost locked as your arms are extended straight up. In this position, a healthy young man should be able to hold up his own weight if he keeps from swaying. Kind of like standing on your hands.
Say for imagry's sake that you weigh 220 lbs. Now several of your friends climb up ladders that are on each side of you, from which point they gently lower a weight-lifting bar that totals 175 lbs onto your outstretched hands. That's 80% of your body weight.
You are now a column and your concentric interaction ratio (capacity) is 0.80.

Now imagine that rather than setting that same weight down gently, they climb another 8'-1" up that ladder. From there they drop the 175 lbs. onto your hands...

...after 0.25 sec. free fall, the 175 lbs. contacts your hands. The effective force that would be imparted should you be able to catch it would be 350 lbs.

...after 0.50 sec free fall: 704 lbs. through 16'-2"

...after 1.00 sec freefall: 2818 lbs. through 32.2 ft. (1281% of capacity)

[The bottom level columns were carrying about 3,500 kilo-pounds that had been falling fro several seconds.]

I will try to watch it this weekend. How long is it?

Before I watch it though, let me say, from the standpoint of how much mass was held up in the air, I've not seen anything in any of the videos I've seen that leads me to believe that the collapse was anything but a passive failure. Passive that is after the airplanes hit them. (And actually, the second tower probably wouldn't have fallen if the first one hadn't!)

Besides, if it was a government conspiracy to raise our rancor against the muslims, why go to such elaborate measures only to kill less than 3000 people? The load path of those towers was so concentrated and so exposed that four carbombs, packed with military grade explosives, detonated at street level would have brought the towers down much more quickly, and with everbody still inside! Ala OKC.

All liscensed structural engineers with high-rise frame design experience in the chat room please raise your hand.

(FamhairCloiche's hand is in the air)

I can't speak to the events of flight 93, but the collapse of the World Trade Center was not controlled demolition.
I've assisted in controlled demolition.
I've read the report.
I understand how the building was built, what it was built out of, and the magnitude of the loads involved.
And sadly, I have worked with uncontrolled demolition before. My previous employer (previous only because my wife and I decides to leave Dallas), did all of the real-time frame and element analysis of the Murrah Federal building via cell phone while the FBI and OKCFD were trying to save people's lives.
If you have any questions about the collapse mechnism of either tower, please feel free to ask.

I use to letterbox myself, havent done it lately, it's alot of fun, like jesstuss said, it's like treasure hunting, plus you get a good hike.

My family and I started letterboxing last summer. My three-year old really likes to get outside.

Speaking of hiking, outside, and Celtic, I just found my dream vacation at this link:
http://www.distantjourneys.com/travel-scotland/highland_way.html

It's a 13 day hike up the West Highland Way from Glasgow to Fort William! Now if I could only remember where I left that extra five grand.

"Who should be the next president?"

Someone who thinks that the US is a good place that is populated by good people. A person who believes that a man should be able to live his life free of the interference of his own government. Our President should believe that our way of life is the best, and our massif of civility be a rock upon which all men should marvel.

In short, no one who is currently running. Until we manage to rid Washington of its crippling drug addiction, we will continue to spiral down the drain of our own washtub.

That drug? Money.

We don't need a revolution (aka Obama's "change"), we need an intervention!

Reading thread has broken my heart, but at the same time, Esther Joy's perserverence and the evidence of the Lord's healing hand have given me strength and hope. Even just this morning her trials have been a ministry to my heart. I will add her to my prayers immediately. Especially since she's practically my neighbor.
