I thought since only a handful get involved in our politics forum this might be better placed here.
As some of you may know recently the new National Do Not Call List came under attack by the courts saying this is protected speech because it is not equal (other groups can still call you) but all this is is telephone harrassment which is illegal not protected speech. So here is what I propose. In the past I have used airhorns the type you can buy at Walmart in their boat section and when a telemarketer calls blast them out. Enough blasting and they'll stop calling you. If the courts will not let us request these criminals to stop then we have to take actgion into our own hands and this is the next best solution and the next best deterant.
yeah figure if they want to harrass us we'll harrass them sort of fight fire with fire. Obviously the courts have decided they want to allow the telemarketers to make harrassing phone calls so this is our use of our free speech.
If you like this suggest it to all your friends soon enough we'll replace the 50 million on the do not call list with 50 million air horns blasting the telemarketers ears off.

Unfortunately, the guy on the other end of the phone is usually some poor sod trying to make a living, just like you and me. He doesn't deserve to have his ear blasted any more than we do. Now, if there was a way to airhorn his BOSS..... I have caller ID and an answering machine, and I just don't interact with them.

I look at it this way he/she knows his/her job is extremely unpopulor yet they chose to still do it. There are plenty of decent jobs out there and they chose the one that harrasses their neighbors. SO I have no problem with this.
It still amazes me though that this judge would rule that telephone harrassment is protected speech just because the law is unequal. Yes I agree it is and the other groups (Cherities and political groups) need to be added to this do not call list but telling these telemarketers they can continue to harrass us is unbelievable!!!
2) They could, however, cause genuine harm to a live person at the other end. Hearing is a fragile thing and can be badly harmed by even one single exposure to noise.
And, no, this can't be justified by saying "Well, they shouldn't have taken that job in the first place."
Using the air horn will only cause grief to that one individual caller. It will not stop the next guy from that company from calling you and will not stop anyone else. In other words, it has no more effect than simply hanging up, which is a lot easier to do, causes no physical harm, does not require reaching for anything during the call and requires no additional expense.
i still like the ar horn idea. I wish I had one last night. A person with a very thick accent I could barely understand called up asking for someone who didn't even live here. When I told them no, they have the wrong number they insisted on verifying the number, which was correct. They then asked if they could talk to the person who owns the place and I said "Not if you are selling anything". They couldn't come up with an answer so I hung up.
To me telemarketers are no better then common criminals because they use harrassment by phone as their weapon of choice. And an airhorn I will gladdly pay the price for and after enough word gets around that people are using such tactics the calls will have to subside. It may take one at a time but across the country those 1 at a time will add up. And as I said to me these are no better then common crimianls invading my right to privacy so I could careless what happens to them.
