For all of you who have sent someone off to college this fall...

Tears As We Say Goodbye

The drive was lively
Punctuated by poignant silence
The drive leaving childhood behind

Boxes, bags and suitcases
Pack the car to the roof
Cherished stuffed friend not forgotten

Sturdy institutional furniture
Draped in bright clothes
Roommate met, bed claimed, new home begins

Room full to the rafters
Family car empty
Throats begin to tighten

She turns to you
Eyes momentarily full of fear
You smile and pull her close

She clings, then separates
You let her go
And wipe your eyes

Eighteen years leading to this day
Leaving your baby behind
Silent ride home

Compassion is the sometimes fatal capacity for feeling what it is like inside somebody else's skin. It is the knowledge that there can never really be any peace and joy for me until there is peace and joy finally for you too.
- Frederick Buechner

If society prospers at the expense of the intangibles,
how can it be called progress?
