I'm my opinion is the best songstress to come out of Canada. If you haven't heard her before I recomend the song Dante's Prayer.
--------------------
Many times man lives and dies Between his two eternities, That of race and that of soul And ancient Ireland knew it all.
" To a Scot, the past clings like sand to wet feet, and is carried about as a burden. The many ghosts are always a part of them, inescapable." Geddes MacGregor
Hope, fear, false-joy, and trouble, Are these four winds which daily toss this bubble, His breath’s a vapour, and his life’s a span; Tis glorious misery to be born a man. ~ from a Cornish gravestone
"Now I perceive the devil understands Welsh.” "God defend me from that Welsh fairy, Lest he transform me to a piece of cheese!” William Shakespeare quotes "Onen hag Oll", One and All (Cornwall's motto)

Good call. She's got a talent for placing the listener in the song. I still can't listen to The Highwayman without being very frustrated by the end.
One thing I'll always regret it not going to see her when she played at the Edmonton Folk Festival a couple of years back. I think it was her first major show since her fiancée passed. I may be wrong in that, but I recall someone making that statement when promoting the event.

Caw "I am a Canadian by birth, but I am a Highlander by blood and feel under an obligation to do all I can for the sake of the Highlanders and their literature.... I have never yet spoken a word of English to any of my children. They can speak as much English as they like to others, but when they talk to me they have to talk in Gaelic." -Alexander Maclean Sinclair of Goshen (protector of Gaelic Culture) We need more Stan Rogers. jams

Speaking of haunting Ullian pipes- her song "Two Trees" is an excellent example-
Beloved, gaze in thine own heart The holy tree is growing there; From joy the holy branches start And all the trembling flowers they bear. The changing colors of its fruit Have dowered the stars with merry light; The surety of its hidden root Has planted quiet in the night; The shaking of its leafy head Has given the waves their melody. And made my lips and music wed, Murmuring a wizard song for thee, There the Loves a circle go, The flaming circle of our days, Gyring, spiring to and fro In those great ignorant leafy ways; Remembering all that shaken hair And how the winged sandals dart Thine eyes grow full of tender care; Beloved, gaze in thine own heart.
Gaze no more in the bitter glass The demons, with their subtle guile, Lift up before us when they pass, Or only gaze a little while; For there a fatal image grows That the stormy night receives, Roots half hidden under snows, Broken boughs and blackened leaves. For all things turn to bareness In the dim glass the demons hold, The glass of outer weariness, Made when God slept in times of old. There, through the broken branches, go The ravens of unresting thought; Flying, crying, to and fro, Cruel claw and hungry throat, Or else they stand and sniff the wind, And shake their ragged wings: alas! Thy tender eyes grow all unkind: Gaze no more in the bitter glass. Beloved, gaze in thine own heart, The holy tree is growing there; From joy the holy branches start, And all the trembling flowers they bear. Remembering all that shaken hair And how the winged sandals dart, Thine eyes grow full of tender care; Beloved, gaze in thine own heart.
