hey everyone,
I have been doing a bit of reading on my family's history and have found the original spelling of my family name Banks to be Ó Bruacháin. I would really like to know how to pronounce it correctly, and if anyone could provide a phonetic spelling that would be great. my best guess is o-brew-kane.
I looked at the pronunciation thread that is post at the top of this forum, but all of the tables are missing, it just says user posted image instead.
Also, is the name Breandán pronounced the same as the anglicized Brendan?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Only came across this, so far.

Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Bruacháin ‘descendant of Bruachán’, a byname for a large-bellied person. The English form was chosen because of a mistaken association of the Gaelic name with bruach ‘bank’.

Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press, ISBN 0-19-508137-4

Check this page out. It gives a rough idea of how to put the word together.

After working it out in my head a few times, I think you are pretty close to the pronunciation. thumbs_up.gif
