In ancient times Ireland was divided into provinces ruled by a King. These provinces were dynamic and their borders changed all the time. Today when the Irish talk about the provinces of Ireland they mean Leinster, Ulster, Munster and Connaught.
A good starting point for the history of Ancient Uladh (Ulster) is found at: Uladh.
A very good site with loads of info, thanks a lot Mailagnas. There's a good source of old Irish surnames that is very interesting. I recommend it highly to anyone who is interested in their Irish genealogy.
