I have four mountain ash (rowan) trees in my gardens.

My husband commented at the weekend that they were taking a long time to come into 'leaf'.... and that the rowans in other gardens nearby were in full leaf....

Sooo, I went out and looked. DISASTER. They have been affected by fireblight and will have to be removed sad.gif All four trees are affected, although 2 are in the back garden and 2 in the front....

There are many superstitions about the rowan. It is a Scottish tradition that planting one will keep the witches from your door.... cool.gif

So, we've got a tree surgeon coming at the end of the week to remove the diseased trees (not a small task, as 3 of the four are over 25 ft high). The 'stumps' will have to be ground out before we can even think of what we can put in their place. Al, our gardener, as said that we should not plant rowans back in the same place.... sad.gif

Cat,
You should wait several years before planting any tree in those places, the blight effects more then just the ash.

Al, our gardner friend, has said that we can plant certain types of trees, but not in exactly the same hole as the blighted ones, but about 5-6 feet away should be ok....

I can understand your sorrow! I lost 2 American Elms to bark beatle, one was over 120 years old, and 2 Sugar maples to ants all in one year! It does tend to leave a gap in the landscape! I love trees, but I seem to be the only one in my area that does, all the farmers keep cutting and cutting the hedge rows. The pheasant that once were plentyfull here are all but gone and the only roosts for the feathered friends is my property. PLANT TREES FOLKS!!!! We need air to breath.

I'm sorry to hear about your trees. But, maybe you should contact, Mirri and she could make something for you out of your tree. That way it will still be with you in some way.

Speaking of Mirri, has anyone heard from her? She's been absent for a long time. I'm wondering if she had her baby and that's what's keeping her busy.

I spoke with her yesterday. She is doing well. Nesting as she said. Getting ready for the wee one.
She has been having trouble posting on the forums. I have contacted, Paul about it.

Well, that's good that the wood is going to someone, who wants it, or can use it.

I too have a tree that has not been in the best health. It's a hawthorn. I fornd out from the neighbors that it has been there less than five years. I cut it back in the autumn. It seems to be doing ok. Right now at least. It just flowered, and is getting new growth. I hope it makes it....
