I don't know, maybe its a Canadian thing but everyone here in Toronto is going absolutely hockey mad (myself included). The mayor even encouraged everyone in the city to start chanting "Go Leafs Go" 15 minutes before the last home game for good luck, and there is not a day that goes by where you don't see atleast 15 people in Maple Leaf Jerseys, and 30 cars with Maple Leaf flags attached to them. Is anyone else following the playoffs, and are people this crazy in other cities?

Oh, and for good measure GO LEAFS GO! thumbs_up.gif

My entire family are big fans of the Red Wings (with exception of a few) and so am I. We will all be glued eek.gif to the TV tomorrow night. It's a crucial game... They def will beat the Flames tomorrow! yes.gif

GO WINGS!

I'm so glad there's other hockey fans out there! The Leafs just lost to the Flyers 7-2 cry.gif in what has to be the most unlucky game of hockey ever (everything that could have gone wrong went wromg, but we still love you Ed!). Oh well, there's still 2 games to go... tongue.gif

Btw, whose your favorite hockey player of all time?

Posted by: MDF3530 02-May-2004, 08:02 PM
I'm a hockey fan, but I don't go to any of the Chicago Blackhawks' games. I hate "Dollar" Bill Wirtz, the owner. That man is so cheap, he throws nickels around like they're manhole covers. Instead, I go to the Chicago Wolves games. They're the American Hockey League affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers. It's cheaper and they've won more league championships (3-two Turner Cups in the now-defunct IHL and one Calder Cup in the AHL) in the past five years than the Blackhawks have in the past 40 years.

My favorites are Wayne Gretzky, Chris Chelios and Denis Savard.

Posted by: faolin 02-May-2004, 08:28 PM
I know what you mean about the NHL. Sometimes you just get so fed up with the fact that they are so concerned about money making rather than the fans themselves (yeah right I can pay $60 for nosebleed seats. I'm a student for crying out loud!). Those are the times you turn to the amateur league. But the Leafs always drag me back in biggrin.gif .

I'm also a big fan of Gretzky; he had so much skill and class. I also liked the old Hab (Montreal Canadian) players Boom-Boom Jefferys and Maurice "The Rocket" Richard. Oh, and of course Bobby Ore. Though I have to say that Tie Domi is earning a special place in my heart just because he tries so darn hard, even though he's really short and doesn't have any real amazing skills.

Who would you say are the biggest underachievers and overacheivers you've seen in hockey? My underachiever and overachiever, for a time, were wearing the indian head sweaters at the same time.

Underachiever: Eric Daze. He's missed the better part of three seasons with a bad back because of his poor workout ethic. He has size, but he tries to finesse his way to the net. Also, he's very predictable in his shot selection; goalies know he's gonna go low on the stick side before he does.

Overachiever: Bob Probert. Long regarded as the heavyweight champion of the NHL, people tended not to notice that he could score occasionally. He was willing to to do all the little things to help the team, like join a scrum in the corner for the puck and go to the front of the net to screen the goalie.

Posted by: faolin 02-May-2004, 09:18 PM
Underachiever would have to be Jose Theodore. I was in Montreal last year and saw him play, and I admit that I was impressed with him. He certainly had finesse, and he put on a soild performance as a goalie. Watching him this year, its hard to believe that its the same person. His goal tending was so sporadic - one minute he was unstoppable, the next he was making plays even a rookie could beat. He was definitely off his game for all of the playoffs, and I can only hope that he pulls it together for next season.

overachiever would have to be Mark Messier. I mean, the guy is 43 and still playing with and getting hit by guys half his age. Not only that but he can kick most of their butts! You gotta respect him for that, especially when he won the "sharp shooting" or what ever it was called at the NHL Allstars competition. Even if he does hang up his skates next year, he's still had a good run.

Whose you pick for winning the cup?

Posted by: Keltic 02-May-2004, 09:20 PM
I have to say that Ed Belfour got Toronto past the first round. If it wasn't for him, Ottawa would have been taking Philadelphia out of the playoffs as we speak.

The biggest underachiever bar none is Alexandre Daigle. The next "Gretzky" was too busy playing nurse instead of playing hockey.

Oh absolutely! Belfour was definitely Toronto's savior in the first round, but it was painful to watch the game today, as the Flyers scored again and again and again. For the first time during the playoffs Belfour was pulled and Kidd was put in. If we don't have Belfour, Philly is going to cream us!

I sort of lost intrest after the Habs got ousted. I deffinately want to see the cup come back home, but what choices do I have? The Flames or the Leafs? unsure.gif Sorry to dissapoint you obvious leafs fans, but neither of those teams do ANYTHING for me. I'm not worried about upsetting any Flames fans, because there aren't any. tongue.gif

I guess it's all part of that "Can't cheer for the Habs and the Leafs" thing, and seeing Calgary get into round two while the Oil didn't even make it into the playoffs is disheartening.

The last time I really cared about the playoffs was the last time the Habs won. Yup, that long. What was that, '93? sad.gif

Last game I watched that I got excited about, the NHL game that followed the Heritage Classic here in Edmonton. The Oil won the old timers game, which was expected, seeing how it was so strongly stacked in their favor. Most of the boys on the Oil's team were either still playing, or just retired. The Habs was packed with boys in their 40's-60's.

But, the Habs won the game that counted, and it was nice cheering for them again, while my brother, an Oil fan, was threatening to toss me out in the snow bank. Traitor. He lives here for eight years and thinks he can turn his back on the Canadiens. tut-tut.

I lost interest when the Kings finished out of the playoffs. Again. My husband watches all the games, though.

Ahhh, gone are the good old days when the Toronto Blue Jays were actually half-decent. With the Raptors going to seed, all we really have left is the Leafs and the Rock (I'm not going to even mention the Argos!)

Tonight, I went to an AHL (American Hockey League) game. I went to Game 3 of a best-of-seven series between the Chicago Wolves (my favorite hockey team) and the Milwaukee Admirals. The Wolves won to cut the series to a 2-1 deficit, but they didn't get any help from the censored.gif refs. The Admirals players could've been mugging the Wolves, and the refs wouldn't call it. However, if a Wolves player breathed on an Admiral, automatic 2:00 in the sin bin. About halfway through the first period, we started the "ref, you suck" chant. The officiating was so horrible, the Wolves announced at the end of the game that anyone who was in attendance tonight will be let in to Monday night's game for free.

Posted by: MDF3530 08-May-2004, 11:04 PM
Here's a statement directly from the Wolves:

QUOTE
Chicago and Milwaukee combined for 132 penalty minutes, provoking Chairman of the Board Don Levin to make an unprecedented offer: "Due to the questionable officiating which I feel is unrepresentative of AHL playoff hockey, any fan who was at Game 3 can present that ticket stub at the Allstate Arena Ticket Office, and receive a free ticket for Game 4 on Monday."

I just have two words to say about the Wolves' ownership: Total class.

Posted by: faolin 09-May-2004, 01:24 PM
With the Leafs now out of the playoffs, I have resorted to cheering to the last Canadian team still in the playoffs, the Calgary Flames. Though they can never replace the Leafs in my eyes, I still find it impressive how a team with no really big names or super-stars can make it so far in the playoffs using just strong team work and dedication. Hopefully this is an indicator of the future of the NHL!

It's always sad to see how badly poor refs can skew a game, and it's even worse when the best team looses based on poor calls rather than skills. Hopefully this will be cleared up soon!

I was just glad that there were no young children around me last night. They would've learned a few new words. I didn't even have anything to drink. You know how alcohol tends to loosen the tongue. That's how mad I was at the refs. My throat is still sore from last night.

Saw the other day in the paper that Sponge Bob Square Pants had higher ratings than games one and two king.gif

Posted by: MDF3530 04-Jun-2004, 09:11 PM
There could be a local access cable show of a guy using the facilities and it'd get higher ratings than hockey here in the US.

Posted by: BluegrassLady 04-Jun-2004, 10:20 PM
One city I know is really hockey crazy in the states is Detroit. They love their Red Wings. Even tho we moved from Michigan 12 years ago, we still keep an eye out for them. Had season tickets one year when our kids were still at home and we all enjoyed it immensely.

Posted by: BluegrassLady 05-Jun-2004, 05:39 PM
Well, peckery, I was born in Canada so I guess I really have no first hand answer to your question. I was only a child when we moved to the states and dear ol dad was a faithful fan of the sport. Lately I must admit that I mostly watch it when my dad is visiting. However, I need to keep track of the Red Wings throughout the season so I can talk about them with him. My sister and brother, who still live in Michigan are
big big Red Wings fans.

ARGH!!!

I just checked the score. Well, we'll see how it goes in Tampa.

I saw the first period, and a quarter of the second at the Atlantic Trap n' Gill with Ange. But we left to go catch a movie. And what a mistake that was. Van Helsing. Did any of you see that? I missed the thread on it, but I got nothing out of it.

Must have been some game though. Double overtime, for the missed clincher! Calgary can't afford to miss this. It's been 15 years, and I don't think they'll recover if they get this close and get sent home.

Posted by: MDF3530 05-Jun-2004, 11:10 PM
Game 7 of a championship series is always exciting. I remember when the Chicago Wolves (the minor league hockey team I root for) won their first championship. That series went the distance. Knowing that there was no tomorrow, we all had a nervous excitement vibe going.

You went to see a movie?? That wasn't very Canadian of you!! Only in Canada will you see the national police force (The Royal Canadian Mounted Police) guarding the Stanley Cup. There were more R.C.M.P. officers around the cup than there are in the Prime Ministers security detail!!

Anyways, it was a great game last night and game 7 is going to be better.

Posted by: oldraven 07-Jun-2004, 11:14 AM
Trust me Keltic, I'm well aware that it was the poor choice. sad.gif It would have been one hell of a game, and I was at the PUB! The Trap n' Gill, to boot. The only Maritimer pub in Edmonton, which is stock full of Newfs every night.

Yeah, I should have parked my arse.

Posted by: MDF3530 07-Jun-2004, 04:13 PM
I'm probably gonna stay home and watch the game on TV.

IMHO, hockey is not a TV or radio-friendly sport. The best way to view a hockey game is live at the arena. In person, it looks like they're going 100 miles per hour. On TV, about one-tenth that speed.

Posted by: faolin 07-Jun-2004, 08:03 PM
Tampa's leading 2-0 going into the third period. My fingers are crossed that the Flames are going to come from behind.

Well, the last five minutes was hockey, anyway. Why they couldn't have pulled like that in the first, I don't know. As soon as that power play hit, they were on their game. Not sure why they didn't pull the goalie in the last 20 seconds though. It's a last chance, so no goalie wouldn't have hurt, but an extra man on the sticks may have changed everything.

Why is a Kentucky girl a Red Wings fan? Just curious.

Posted by: BluegrassLady 08-Jun-2004, 11:31 AM
Well, tsargent62, it goes like this....

Many moons ago, I was born in Ontario. Then when I was just a babe, my family migrated to the land of the mighty Red Wings, where I resided for over three decades. Then the love of my life and the father of my two bairns decided it was time to make a change in our lives. We searched and we searched to find a new land. It turned out to be the commonwealth of the great state of Kentucky. We are very happy here, but, do you know that they do not have ANY pro sports!! That is a good thing, smile.gif but a bit strange to a lass who lived for so many years in the Detroit area with the Red Wings, the Pistons, the Tigers and the Lions.

So, the results are that I still follow the mightly Red Wings!!!

No disrespect intended to y'all who are dissapointed - but since my team (the LA Kings) didn't even make the playoffs, I was rooting for Tampa Bay - IMHO, every once in a while a team that hasn't ever won the Cup before needs to win, if only to prevent complacency.

Next year, in fairness, when the Kings don't make the playoffs (again), and if Boston doesn't make the finals (again) I promise to root for any Canadian team in the Finals. biggrin.gif

If there is a next year, I'd like to see the Blackhawks win Lord Stanley's cup. The last time they won was back in 1963, back in the days of Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita.
