Hello all!

This is my first posting ... well, if truth be known, this is my first posting in any on-line environment, so there is a little feeling of trepidation (trying something new), combined with the wonderful anticipation of meeting new people with similar interests ~

My home is Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada ... where I'm happy to report that the Celtic music (and the Gaelic culture) is thriving ... you may have heard of The Rankin Family, The Barra MacNeils, Natalie MacMaster, Mary Jane Lamond, Bruce Gouthro (Runrig), Rita MacNeil, Ashley MacIsaac ... and the list goes on and on ... with a musical "Mac" and "Mc" (complete with fiddle in hand) around every corner!

For those of you who enjoy good cup of tea, there is a saying in Cape Breton that goes like this: 'the doorknob is attached to the teapot' ... and it is true. And guess what? Our warm island hospitality extends to local culinary delights such as oatcakes, tea biscuits, pork pies and molasses cookies, butterscotch pie, and if you are really lucky, homemade maple walnut fudge (yum).

Over the next week or so, I'll do my best to complete the Celtic Radio profile, add photos and share knowledge, resources and ideas ... hmm, as soon as I figure out the appropriate forum spots in the community ... so thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. In the meantime, here is a link to the new Office of Gaelic Affairs in Nova Scotia: http://www.gov.ns.ca/oga/

Heads up: I interviewed Lewis MacKinnon (new CEO, Office of Gaelic Affairs) today on the healing qualities of the Gaelic culture in Nova Scotia (MP3 - audio). Lewis MacKinnon is fluent in Gaelic, sings and writes poetry ... so if anyone is interested in this type of information, please let me know, I'm always happy to share ~

Oh yes, for those of your who would like to know a little more about the Gaelic culture in Cape Breton Island, please go to: http://www.celtic-colours.com/aboutcb.html

Plus, here is a travel accolade: http://www.capebretonpost.com/index.cfm?si...d=104378&sc=145

100,000 "Thank Yous" for the opportunity to be part of your community ... and have a restful and relaxing evening!

Hello and welcome to CR Mildred,
I'm sure you'll find that the people here are as friendly as the one from beautiful Nova Scotia where my late father in law was born,Wolfville to be more exact.
My husband and I been around Nova Scotia 3 times now and still there are some beautiful areas that we haven't seen yet. We went to the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts & Crafts but unfortunately we could not visit that day but we'll go back for sure.
As for the language itself yes it is thriving and more so then in Scotland which is just starting to be teached again in schools.Don't know the language myself but would like to learn. If you're interested in one poem that I wrote about Scotland you can look it up in the forum Celtic Hearts and if you're interested to know more about my feelings on Nova Scotia you can look it up in World showcase on the Canada,Nova Scotia forum.
Hope you enjoy the site and look forward to your future posts.LOA cheers.gif

Hello Cape Breton!

For a "first poster", you've done a very good job of it! I'm happy to learn so many things that I didn't know about your area of Nova Scotia - I like the thought of hospitality - that's what Celtic Radio is about too. Although I'm not sure that "attached to every computer is a tea pot", we certainly have very nice people who make others feel welcome!

For now, have fun wandering around the site - lots of forums to experience - and if you have any questions, please post them! I look forward to reading your future posts!

Best cheers! Robbie

Good to have you, CBC. wink.gif Greetings from across the causeway. I'm in Goshen, Guysborough Co.; about twenty minutes from Antigonish in the Guysborough direction.

The Nova Scotia Highlands and Cape Breton in particular, come very highly acclaimed here, for contributions to keeping Celtic music and tradition very much alive. I've been to St. Anne's, and have been spending a fair amount of time exploring CB with my wife and kids over the last few years.

Please enjoy your time here, as I'm sure you will. king.gif

Hello again!

Many thanks for your welcoming words, warm wishes and kind thoughts - I am feeling very "at home" now, and looking forward to reading your posts, ideas and news ... hot cup of tea in hand!

Heads up: Since I mentioned Nova Scotia's new Office of Gaelic Affairs in my last post, I wanted to share that Lewis MacKinnon (CEO) has created a 100% Gaelic music CD called A’ Seo, Here. For those who enjoy reading CD reviews, here's a nugget from Celtic Heritage that speaks to the quality of the recording:

LINK: http://www.celticheritage.ns.ca/issues/nov06/1.htm

I also learned from Lewis (who is a wealth of information on all things Gaelic) that The Great Book of Gaelic will be on tour in Canada in 2008. For the Newfoundlanders out there, you'll be delighted to know that the North American tour will kick off in Corner Brook, Newfoundland at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in June 2008.

If you are looking for a really nice on-line shop that specializes in kiltmaking and other celtic goodies, please check out MacIsaac Kiltmakers & Celtic Gift Shop located on Cape Breton Island. This family business has a great motto on their homepage "Live Tradition. Respect Tradition. Wear Tradition"

Enjoy the day ... take care and stay warm ... brrr!

I have that CD. I picked it up at a tourist shop in St. Peters. Lewis also runs the Gaelic program here in St. Andrews at the Elementary School. Angela, Coira, and I had the pleasure of sitting in on one of his Gaelic Immersion exercises at Antigonish Highland Games last year, and it was awesome. There were people from all over, and no one was allowed to utter a single word in English while under the tent. Lots of fun, and the best way to learn.

We had tried to use MacIsaac Kilts for our wedding, but they had no Royal Stewart's that weren't already booked, and having four MacLean's made would have cost far too much (at any kilt maker).

The first time I ever heard of Nova Scotia was in grade school when one of our teachers used to remind us constantly that she was from there. When I went on to high school and her son was in my classes, I told him how his mom always told us about it. To this day, I think of her when I hear the words "Nova Scotia" tongue.gif

I'm down in the sunny South (although today it's pretty dismal). But my mom's side of the family was from Belgium and Canada. I don't know whereabouts in Canada, though. I should research it - their last name (a couple of generations back) was Poncelet.

Welcome to the family, Mildred!

Hello there!

For those of you who follow all things Gaelic culture in Nova Scotia, you'll be really happy to hear that on Monday, February 25, 2008 the provincial government is unveiling a new Heritage Strategy: "A Treasured Past, A Precious Future: A Heritage Strategy for Nova Scotia, 2008-2013".

In an email today, Lewis MacKinnon (CEO, Office of Gaelic Affairs) shared that "there are significant pieces in the Strategy that pertain to Gaelic in the province". Yes!

The good news is that that launch is open to the public, so if you are in the Halifax area, please consider supporting the launch at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (Small Craft Gallery) at 1:30 pm. To access an invitation and RSVP, please contact Christianna Williston at 902 424 7398.

In the spirit of great East coast hospitality, Lewis MacKinnon asked that this invitation be forwarded to "anyone who may be interested". Thank you Lewis!

On another note, thanks again to every one who has taken the time to read my 'beginner' posts and a special thank you to everyone who has sent me a reply post ... much appreciated ... and enjoy the day!

Mildred Lynn
