I have heard several opinions about this man but, only a few sources do I value, you guys would be one of them.

What do you think of the man?
What do you think of his works & writings?
Is/was he truly evil or are the stories about him just propaganda?

Aleister Crowley was many of the things that were printed about him. Many were his own creation. Yes, he was a drug, and sex addict. And loved ALL forms of experamentation of those things.
But you also have to look at what he did in the age that he was doing those things. The turn of the 20th century. When Victorian conservity, and pre 20th century expressionism were colliding!

His writings and studies on Magick is what should be looked at.

I personally recommend his book - 'MAGICK in theory and practice'

That is where I would start...... then maybe to '777 and other Quabalistic writings'

I only half answered your question. As a person Aleister was a little 'out there'. Even for todays standards.... Just think the stir he made back in his day! wink.gif But I think a lot of it was his own hype.
As an Occultist his writings are very text book, and precise. You can tell by his words that Magick was his passion. I like his works.... many have a problem with it...... It works for me......

I am fascinated with Crowley. You have to weed out they hype from the oh, how do I say it, serious things he did. he definitley had a narcissistic streak. Some of the stuff he did was pure baloney.

I think some of his best stuff was when he was with the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

I am mainly fascinated with his brain. I wonder how someone gets to that point.

You could say the man was a genius, you can also say he was a lunatic. biggrin.gif

*bounds in all happy Faceish* Great News, Barnes & Nobel had 4 Books written by A.C. !! I have ordered them and am now just waiting. Thanks Bardy babe, I appreciate the link, it gave me exactly what I needed hug.gif

*Looks for that song*

Genious or Lunatic huh? hmm sounds like Nikola Tesla but on a more spiritual plane. It is amazing to me how when these men were alive they were put down and made fun of. Their reputations ruined because of other men and their arrogance. Yet now in this day and age we find that what they said or did was actually fact & correct in alot of ways. Are we more open minded physically or is there a deeper spiritual truth being shown to us?

It's a good question, I think.

Many many hug.gif to each of you

I think it's a bit of both.

Today Magick is less Arcane, than in the day when, Aleister was practicing. At that time magick was done in 'secret' societies, ie The Golden Dawn. And he broke that mold, with his group O.T.O.

But I think his obsession with being an adventurer, took its toll on him. He lost his son to Scarlette Fever, while they were on one of his trips...... I think he was a bt obsessive about the things he was into. And that on top of his drug habits....... gave him some of his reputaion.

hmmmmmmm, you could be right, but even I get obsessive over some things.
Like my Art work
or my Dragons.

Heh Just part of being me I guess.

well, my father loved crowley so much he named me aiwassa- the a on the end to make it feminine!

Posted by: Shadows 15-Nov-2004, 11:09 AM
I find nothing about him or his works that even come close to true Magick or paganism... he was out to make a buck and a name for himself and he did just that! You "could" call him the father of these "dressed in black kids" at the malls that don't have a clue!

O'siyo,
~ Personally, I believe he was nothing more than a Master of Propaganda and a Master of Manipulation hitler.gif Far from being anything Magical in my opinion..oh and let us not forget he was a major drug abuser...claims he needed them for his 'visions' and to 'receive messages'....hmmmm don't buy that either! I believe he was a miserable, insecure little man..
