Where are my fellow smilie_osx.gif Geeks? The lab I administer/teach in is stocked with IMacs and PowerMacs. My current computers are an Ibook and an IBM Laptop. (The University I attend is smilie_xp.gif-based). I must keep an IBM laptop on hand to access the reference library.

I am a convert to Appledom. I have found them to be the best and most relible.

I don't know very much about computers. I just got a gateway laptop for x-mas. clap.gif

Whatever gets the job done is OK with me.
At home, I use an eMachines T4130; nothing special but it gets the job done. At work, the company supplies me with a Dell P3 desktop and Dell P2 laptop. Not exactly state of the art stuff. I use my Ipaq 2215, with WIFI, at coffeeshops and occasionally connect to the web with the 2215, using my Samsung cellphone, when on the road. More rarely, I just use the browser on the phone, although it's too slow for regular use.

I am a Macintosh devotee from waaaay back (I programmed for the Mac BEFORE the 1984 release) and have one at home, but am forced to teach The Dark Side....

Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow
Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

I'm an Apple smilie_osx.gif geek too. It is what I learned on in school. I'll never be seduced by the Dark Side starwars.gif .

For me, a pre-built box just won't cut it. I build my own and get exactly what I want in them. My home LAN is a mix of Microsoft products and various distributions of Linux. I've been a Mac basher for a long time, and starting to soften up a little. At this point I'd like to add one to my network to see how it works and learn more about the platform as it exists today.

Yes, I swear by Linux, myself smilie_tux.gif But I don't recommend it for average Joe-off-the-street. I like to tweak things, get things working exactly how I want. Options for most Linux software are stored in config files that are edited by hand (a lot cleaner and more powerful than a GUI window if you ask me, but also more apt to scare someone who doesn't know it). Thanks to the structure of the system and how it is written, bugs are quickly discovered and remedied, and it will run on almost anything. single chips, an iPOD, PDA, MAC, Intel PC, Sparc Station, PS2, XBox, most PDA's, Cell phones, etc.... In addition, there are projects to make it a lot more user friendly, which have made great strides. The dependancy loops, however, are my main reason for saying it's not ready for average Joe's home desktop. You get ready to install app A, that needs app B, that needs library E, F, and G..... all of which should be built from source code (tar -xvzf ; cd
; ./configure ; make ; make install) When someone can find a way to make it fairly easy to work with those loops, then perhaps it will be ready for the average desktop. Currently, however, I can already easilly see it being used for workstations in an office. After all, it would eleminate the worry of someone soing something you didn't want them to when they don't recognise the system beyond what these few icons on the desktop do smile.gif

homebuilt.. firstly it's cheaper for me, and I can have the things I want in my machine.
I usually use 2 OS, Win2k & debian (linux), but since i didn't do much programming in the last time and use alot of programs not built for linux I resorted to just have Win2k on my comp

As I said, I am a convertf from the smilie_xp.gif dark side, however, I do have to flirt with it to do research. starwars.gif

I have owned about a dozen computers in the last 10 years. I have built 3, and rebuilt about 60 over the last 4 years. Since 2000, I have taught computer lit in two in under-funded schools. The best source for new computers was to take old surplus machines, salvage what you can, then using the good parts to make another computer work, or work better. It's actually a lot of fun!

My students love it when a computer breaks down, because they have the opportunity to take it apart and fix it.

I am hoping that a grant comes through, and we can get the new E-macs in the lab. smilie_osx.gif

My or I should say my Wife's Computer is a home built.

She works at Systemax Manufacturing as a Service Rep. and the people that works with her gave her a computer for all the help she gives them at her work.

Each one of the Techs she works with, went together and supplied some part and it was all compiled into one unit.

Me, I have not a clue when it comes to computers. I know the main thing and that is turning it on. biggrin.gif The Internet is a new toy to me. I mostly work in either Word or Excel, now and then in Access and check my email. Other than that is an experiment.

So I am neither an Apple Geek nor Computer Nerd.

In our house we have two HP desktops, a custom built Quantex, and a Toshiba laptop. I work for a major retailer and I bought both HP CPU's as closeouts for really cheap. Sometimes the deal is too good to pass up. I guess I could have voted a couple of catagories.

I'm computer addicted. Not a nerd or retard, just addicted! I find I can't go a day without talking to some special folks. Now I do all of my shopping on line. Hate to go to the mall. Can you believe a girl that doesn't like to go to the mall. I took a gender test and I came out a man. I think my hubby might not like that.

We have 3 computer's we use on a daily basis. I have a Dell laptop that I use for business travel with a GPS for travel here and overseas and business projects.

Our home computer is a 6 month old black case with a clear plex side. It has blue lights and 8 fan's. I don't know what the speck's on it are but it's got the neatest Spawn creature inside it. With the blue light's it's awesome at night. Cool computer.

I'm like Richard and Mailagnas maqqas Dunaidonas , I just want the darn thing to work. But I confess it was quite fun to crack the case and install more memory, a cd burner and new E drive.

We have a Gateway. It's what I worked with back in the dark ages when I got a paycheck. It works for us. GatewayGoBack has saved my butt more than once.

But my 'old' (four years) machine is starting to make some groans and whistles and I know the end will appear one day in the not too distant future. While the idea of building with what still works sounds great to my Conservation loving soul, I wouldn't have a clue how. Too bad you guys all live so far away. However, when it comes time to replace this dinosaur (sorry old boy) I know where I'm coming for advice as to what to get.

Annabelle:

You like fans eh =) At the last LAN party, my friend installed 2-4 Tornado's in his box, and at the one before that he installed a Monster Zalman heat sink on his video card! That box sounds like a jet taking off, and with the plexiglas on the side he can sit there and watch the cables being blown around. That box is a little loud for my tastes.

When he took his box home the first time, with the Zalman installed, he removed the video card for fear of breaking it off. The heatsink has a plate on each side of the card that is almost the same size as said card, with a 120mm fan hanging off the side of it! And that's just to cool the video card's GPU. Doesn't do anything for the video RAM. We've all decided that even a 2d card needs a Zalman installed on it. the thing just looks totally cool in the case. Weighs a couple pounds too.

As for my box, it's plenty loud enough with 3 80mm fans and the CPU fan in it. When I upgrade my video card here soon (currently got a GeForce 4 which I'm starting to actually use), what I get is sure to add a fan to the case. We shall see smile.gif If I'm wanting to take a trip to the isles and pay off my school loan, then I need to be careful atm on dishing out a couple of hundred here and there on computer hardware.

Dell at work, and a Dell at Home. Going to build my next one, as my home machine has been pretty heavily converted anyway. Gotta get a T1 at home. Cable don't cut it.
