Skully has given old Irish folksongs a new twist to bring them up to the 21st century!!! They are still the great Irish tunes everyone knows and loves, but he's given them a freshness that sooths your soul! I highly recommend this album!

mcnberry,
what a lot of nice things to say, you've hit it right on, the man is a genious. I don't know if you noticed, but there's a couple tracks on Irish Makeover are Skully's very own: Mardyke and Shirin, may have missed some, it's late and I'm tired. You know Metissue and Skully did the music on Dead Like Me. This guy is just to awesome for words!
take care,
darlene

I have my very own copy of IRISH MAKEOVER, signed by Skully. It travels with me to work. My staff and patients (I work at a health care facility) begged me to leave it there for the weekends. I finally caved in and left it there last Saturday. My staff got everyone up in their wheelchairs and had a IRISH MAKEOVER party out in the courtyard! The patients loved it! Guess I eventually will have to get a second copy.
If you like IRISH MAKEOVER, you might also like Skully's WITHOUT A VOICE album. It has a wonderful rendition of the Horslips tune "Trouble With A Capital T" on it. Very Irish indeed! At the moment it is only available at I-tunes, but I heard a little rumor Skully might release it on CD!

I don't know what I could add to the wonderful comments about IRISH MAKEOVER that were left by the others. I agree with every word they have said. Skully is a brilliant musician, a wonderful friend, and an all around genuinely good man. His music, in each of his project forms: "Without A Voice" (his solo work), METISSE, and IRISH MAKEOVER... has its own unique sound. And yet each is intrinsically SKULLY and completely amazing! IRISH MAKEOVER is a breathtaking work that will carry you away to a wonderful place in your heart and mind. I not only recommend buying this album, I recommend that you buy two! You'll want one for keeping to yourself... and one for sharing with others!

Sitting here on a very typical Oregon summer afternoon (cool and grey), listening to Celtic Radio. Skully's "Mardyke" just played. Although I have his IRISH MAKEOVER CD, I still get excited to hear his music here over the Aether! My poor son and the rest of my household has to listen to me screaming "Skully is coming up on the Radio!"
Oops, the two cats just jumped too!

Well Said !
Whenever I am here at CelticRadio and hearing one of the songs from Irish Makeover, it is exciting; I immediately went over Skully's Irish Makeover myspace page and sent a message, he probably thought I was , well, I'm not sure.

Just when I thought I'd learned a lot about Skully and all his truely magical masterpieces, I am enlightened with More on our Man ~ The Chapter House ~
Yes, it's our man Skully~If you are just a Wee Bit Curious go check out the official website at:
www.www.myspace.com/theofficialchapterhouse

The Chapter House

In 1985 two of Corks better known bands Porcelyn Tears (Irelands first all girl band) and the zany trio Real Mayonnaize split up, Freeing up model and Porcelyn Tears front girl Ann Redmond, and Real Mayonnaize electronic man Skully.
Ann and Skully were fortunate enough to nab one of Cork's finest drummers Paul Moore, and THE CHAPTER HOUSE was born.
In less then a year THE CHAPTER HOUSE bounced to national acclaim winning 2fm's Band of 86, battle of the bands, voted overwhelmingly by the public. The band played to capacity crowds at Corks land mark venue Sir Henry's.
THE CHAPTER HOUSE released their first single SCORCH AVENUE in March 1987, to limited radio play (Ireland's media was not yet ready for an indie band without guitars)
In late 1987 THE CHAPTER HOUSE made their first video for BYWATERS and MRS THOMPSON at Cork's old prison (before the building was renovated)
In 1988 THE CHAPTER HOUSE turned their attention to London's record companies, and although created huge interest, the all important record deal remained elusive, And so the trio disbanded.
In three short years THE CHAPTER HOUSE recorded many songs at Cork's legendary ELM TREE STUDIOS, a selection of those songs are now here for your enjoyment...

CASkullyFans,
As I read the last post last night; it didn't make since to me; I guess when I hit my head Sunday it left me a little, well, not able to post something that made sense. I meant to express how I felt when on this site and heard something from Irish Makeover, it gives you a giggly feeling know that, hey, I know this guy (Skully) and that is awesome.
Anyway, please people, check him out, it's worth the time.

Good Afternoon Ladies and CelticRadio.net Fans!

I'm sorry Darlene, for my prior typing error giving Berry credit for your post. sad.gif

Thank you Berry for all of your informative posts. wink.gif

Well Done Darlene! I love the comment for The Chapter House complete with slide show!

But most of all, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Skully’s magnificent music.

The radiance surrounding Skully on the “Irish Makeover” album cover photo is quite fitting! His creative composition of the instrumental layers in each track is captivating.
Kate Murphy’s harmonizing vocals along with Skully’s masterful work make “Blackbird” evocatively passionate. Mardyke”, "King of the Fairies" & “Shirin” are captivating instrumentations. “All around my hat” is upbeat, catchy and spirited.
Skully’s musical blend gives a breezy essence to the poignant ballad of “Molly Malone”. It is filled with fun sound effects: the sound of Molly dropping coins in her cloth hand bag, her wheelbarrow rolling across the cobblestone roads, the whistle of the grand cockle’s {yes they do, ‘I’ve been there’ -digging}, the gurgling/bubbling sound grand cockles make [in the sand], the cracking open of the grand cockle shells [CLACK], and my favourite [at the end] the ‘shwoooup’ sound of Molly’s ghost rushing past!
Each time you listen to a piece of Skully music, you hear a new instrumental effect that you missed on the prior listens. It’s NOT likely that you will tire of Skully’s music.

It is so nice to see everyone here; it shows true support and the highest respect for an all so talented man, Skully. Everyone's comments are very uplifting and should make Skully proud. While I know some of you have known him for a long time, I had the extreme pleasure of meeting him via myspace in the Fall of 2008, and feel very previledged. The things I say and are from my heart, the man is brillant; I listen to his music every chance I get; he wakes me up in the morning on the way to work and smoothes my soul with his music for the ride home.

I have my favorites such as King of the Fairies, and actually all the cuts from Without a Voice and I'm constantly finding out more about him and I am amazed.
CelticRadio has helped me to reach out to a lot of people who haven't had the chance to hear Skully's music; weather it be, Irish Makeover, Without a Voice,
Metisse or any other project he has done.

So I want to thank everyone who stops by, I truly appreciate your compliments, I want to see Skully really make it big so matter what road follows he certainly deserves it, he's a great guy and a fabulous entertainer.

I can't get into this album. The electronic sounds just make me cringe everytime I hear them.

I can't believe that a person who drinks Guiness would have that kind of opinion about Irish Makeover~ Guiness and Newcastle are amongst my favorites and I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but, personally, I think you may not be that familiar with true talent ~

Hello ridgeback77!

Thank you for your input!

Here is an excerpt from Celtic MP3 Music Magazine:

"Well, well! An Irish makeover indeed it is! You can take traditional songs and redo them, but it typically doesn't turn out well unless there is an overall vision for doing so. There is here. Right off the bat with track 1, "Molly Malone" you hear a new sound that works. I bet you didn't think this song could sound "cutting edge"...but it can, and does here. And the vocals are as smooth as butter. The electronic feel to some of the tracks might throw hardcore traditionalists, but for those who like to mix things up a bit, they'll be right on target".

Skully knew that he was taking a risk by "revamping" Traditionals.

Here is what he had to say on the CD cover of IRISH MAKEOVER:

"When I started recording this album, I wanted to take these beautiful old Irish songs and push them as far into the twenty first century as far as I could without altering their beauty or the emotions they evoke. Although these songs have been performed in many different ways throughout the years, from the sean-nos singer beside the fireplace in an old Irish cottage, to massive Hollywood orchestration. Pop, jazz, reggae, and even punk versions have been made, and yet their beauty lives on. There is no correct way of performing them, they are timeless, masterpieces passed on from generation to generation."
Skully

On his Myspace page:

.... "And so two years ago I set to work creating Skully versions of these beautiful old Irish songs. Although very electronic (after all that is what I do!) I strove to maintain the powerful emotion that these timeless master pieces possess."

So ridgeback77, do the electronic sounds bother you, or is it the use of old Irish Traditionals?

Take for example Enya's Oíche Chiúin (Silent Night) from her "And Winter Came" CD. A traditional Austrian song, sung in Gaelic. What do I hear in the intro and throughout the song? You guessed it! Electronic sounds! Do I as a German cringe when I hear it? No. I think it is a beautiful song remade into something fresh and just as beautiful.

As a matter of fact I detect a lot of "electronic sounds" in some of the wonderful music played here on Celtic Radio!
