Myself, I'd like to go to Ireland, Scotland (especially the Highlands), and the Galicia region of Spain. I've seen pictures on the Internet and that looks like it'd be a nice place to visit.

Hi Mike!

Before I took over the Brittany forum, I would have said Scotland first and then Ireland. Period. Now, Scotland is still first, but Ireland and Brittany are tied for second!

Scotland for me!

I Enjoy the Highlands, Snowdonia, and the Shannon River Valley.

I would enjoy taking a trip to all of the gaelic areas; especially Scotland where my ancestors are from and Ireland where my husband's grandfather is from.

Posted by: behan 15-Jul-2004, 10:07 AM
I am lucky enough to have been to al of them , great thing about living in europe is its so cheap to fly around europe

Posted by: oldraven 15-Jul-2004, 10:12 AM
Scotland, and then Ireland. And then, well, it's all good after that. Isle of Man has been looking pretty interesting lately. smile.gif (though, I don't know if that's considered a gaelic region. They speak Manx and English, right?)

Posted by: Ceciliastar1 15-Jul-2004, 11:08 AM
Well, I've been to Ireland already, but I wouldn't mind going back! Howver, I really really want to go to scotland since i haven't been there yet. Hopefully someday I will!

I would like to travel to the highlands of Scotland. Around Glenfinnin and Loch Shiel. Then to Wales where my ancestors came from.

The funny thing is that my family consists of red haired people and I have even found a tartan to match our family's name.

I have a sneaking idea that my ancestors from Britian raided across the border and picked up some Scottish/Gaelic serving wenches.

Scottland, no question about it. I would go there then I would swim over to Ireland for tea... tongue.gif

I have been to Britanny and Galicia in Spain...wishing dearly to visit Scotland and Ireland!

It's been a life long dream to visit Scotland. My grand parents grew up just outside of Edinburgh. I may have my chance in 2006. My pipe band is tentatively planning on going over to play in the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow.

I would also love to see Ireland. Got a wee bit of green in me, too.

Posted by: Gordon 15-Jul-2004, 05:24 PM
Scotland for sure. I'd love to see the land that my great-grandparents left behind. Maybe once school is finished next summer and I get my internship under my belt, I'll go there and see if I can't get a few tips from a chef in that area and maybe exchange some recipes. I have a few Scottish recipes that my grandmother still uses today but it would be nice to get a few more to try out.

My husband and I have been to parts of Scotland and Wales. In fact, the last time we were in Scotland I was 3 months pregnant with our eldest! We loved every minute there--took the train from London up to Edinburgh, then went on from there to Perth, rented a car and drove up to Inverness (beautiful!), and from there we took several (!) trains down to Wales-Portmadog (sp?) to visit Portmeiron and the Village from The Prisoner series (hubby's very fond of that series). Anyway, there is so much more of Scotland & Wales that we want to see!! Someday I'd also like to visit Ireland. We have a running list of places we want to see in our lives, and those three are right at the top!

I'm originally from the west coast of Scotland and have been here in the States for just over 5 years. Aragorn, you are going to need a good pair of arms to swim to Ireland. You may also need more than a cup of tea if you made it there. You might wanna take the sealink ferry and have a tea or a Guinness on the way!! biggrin.gif

Posted by: WizardofOwls 15-Jul-2004, 09:57 PM
WOW! Cool! Tim McGowan is here! I enjoy your music, my friend! But I must confess, I had never heard it until I found CelticRadio!

I wish to visit Ireland....Scotland as well but, first I must see Ireland! A friend of mine was telling me how beautiful Isle of Man is so must put it on my agenda. smile.gif

WALES! That would be my first choice, then Galicia in Spain, then Scotland, Ireland and Isle of Man. Ohhh...I forgot Brittany in there.

Mmm, I must confess to dreaming of dear England a great deal of the time! I've been there twice, but there is so much more to see... the north, the south west...

Ireland too, there's the north I haven't explored yet...

But I've never been toScotland and that's where my husband's family traces its roots back to. He says that when he retires, we'll go there for a couple of weeks and explore. I hope we actually get to do that!

Annabelle,

I think we should have a girls trip to Scotland. We could backpack around the country to see the sites.

There has to be several girls here that would like to go. One big slumber party.

My family identifies with the Uslter-Scots. We were Orange on St. Patrick's Day. We have been in The South since 1760.

Having done a 2 week tour with m'wife last year through the Ilse's. I now know what I do and do not want to see when we go back.
In Scotland I want to get north. Very north. The Orkney Islands just fascinate me to end. Not to mention the archeology dig sites and megaliths that are strewn through out the islands.
I would like to spend more time in Edinburgh as well. Such a great city.( Far better than London, and cleaner!!!!) Beautiful old buildings, not to mention very eerie cemetaries. ( I still need to develop those photos!!!! LOL!) I could spend a lot of time near the boarders/Central belt. Just beautiful. Mountains, and stone walls, mixed with fields of canolla( rapeseed) ...Just beautiful.....

In Ireland, I want to visit the western coast. The rocky shores, and old homes...great photo oppertunities.

The country side in Wales in just beautiful. I could sit there all day and be content.

I have never been to the Isle of Man. It has always been on 'My list' of places to go. More so now with the forum here on CR.net, and the beautiful photies.

As you I am sure you can tell the trip was amazing! And I am itching to get back.

Cheers all!

While I would love to say all of them. The one I would truly love to see would have to be Ireland. With my Flyrod of course. wink.gif

I would also love to take my guitar and play with some folk with some old folk songs.

I have already play the Scottish Reel with my Banjo accompanied with 2 Bagpipes. That was fun. biggrin.gif

Richard, you've got to record that and send a copy to MacFive so we can all hear. I've heard pipes and fiddle together, I'll bet the banjo sounds really good with the pipes too.

As for which area, I'd have to say Scotland, the far north. Stathnaver is the home of the Mackays. But would like to see the rest of Scotland also and Wales and northern England.

Sorry to say, sad.gif but when I was playing my Banjo to the Scottish Reel, we were in a Mountain Man Encampment. The two Scotsmen that came in had just come from a Pipe and Drum Competiton in Canada.

This was one of the spur of the moment things. I don't even think that there was even a Video Recorder there. Just about everyone that was in the camp got up and danced. This is one event that I shall remember always. wink.gif

This happened back in either 1987 or 1988 while we were at the Blue Jacket Long Rifle Encampment in Bellefontaine, Ohio over the 4th of July.

MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE PART OF THE UK IS SCOTLAND AND THATS ABOUT IT , I DO NOT LIKE THE MAJORITY OF ENGLISH FROM FIRST HAND EXPERIANCE BUT I FIND THE SCOTS AND IRISH FAR MORE CULUTRED , FRIENDLY AND INTERESTING THAN THE WELSH OR ENGLISH.

The Northeast of Scotland is definitely planned on my next trip. I've traveled all over Ireland and find it to be truely an island of wonder, but Scotland calls me.

Posted by: Siobhan Blues 26-Jul-2004, 11:27 AM
Just last year, my mother's cousin published a family history book about the Adkins-Scalf-Water-Ezell family heritage they share. To my delight, the Scalf name traces back to a woman who was from the Isle of Man! I thought 'ah HA - one more place to add to the Must Visit list!' cool.gif

It was cool then when my husband was watching motorcycle racing on the telly one Sunday afternoon and called me into the room to see the location of the race: The Isle! I promptly sat down on the sofa and watched the rest of the race with him. What a beautiful place, similiar to England and Iireland in some ways but very unique in others.

Posted by: CelticRose 26-Jul-2004, 12:50 PM
I have a special affinity for the Isle of Man too! One of my many great-grandfathers fought and died there during the Jacobite Rising. I would love to touch that soil too!

I only have about 5 more years before my children go off into the big bad world. Then I'll be free and I'm going to sell everything I own and buy a big rv and travel the world.

My first stop will be Scotland for sure.

It's called find a big enough cargo ship and drive the rv onto it. I don't care how much it costs. I won't have any kids to take all my hard earned money. ehhehehe

I would have to say the Isle of Skye, Isle of Man, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, well that should just about cover it.. *smiles* There are so many places that I would go to I can't just pick one..

Come to my Isle and I will show you sights that will make you gasp. Although the Isle is but 32miles x 16miles it is a place of beauty.

But please come before the whole Isle is covered in concrete.

If you have watched 'Waking Ned' that was shot in my homeland

Many films have been shot here, we have an unadulterated landscape for these things.

My place to visit would be Brittany and not only because Celtica lives there either.

I have met and fell in love with all the Celtic nationalists.

One of these days I will visit the USof A. I think there are more Manks there than there are here.

Posted by: celtica 24-Aug-2004, 02:01 PM
Oh Zéphyr, you arrived before me ! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Sure you won't believe me but I was saying to my collegues yesterday that my latest craze is to go to the Isle of Man because of all the amazing pictures I saw here ! smile.gif . And the culture would be an enrichment for me. Isles are always different, the atmosphere is more intense. And I would dream to listen to people speaking Manx ! smile.gif

Posted by: zephyr 24-Aug-2004, 02:34 PM
Celtica, not many people speak Manx over here.

It is my wish to learn the Breton language (I have to before next year)

If you don't mind you could give me a couple of lessons.

I can manage Bon jour as Bon soir as Bon Nuit. Outside of that I am lost

Wait a minute I seem to remember. Filles, Girl?

I will wait until you tell me I'm wrong.

Celtica I have an awful lot to learn. Teach me!

Posted by: celtica 24-Aug-2004, 03:05 PM
I'm so sorry Zéphyr, but I'm afraid I don't speak the Breton language...unfortunately sad.gif . So if you're already learning, you'll have to teach me ! tongue.gif .
But your french seems quite good wink.gif

Posted by: Annabelle 25-Aug-2004, 06:18 AM
Isle of MAN is my favorite. Beautiful place an the language is too.

Posted by: CelticRose 25-Aug-2004, 01:17 PM
I have a wee bit of history from the Isle of Man. One of my great grandfather's fought and died on there during the Jacobite Rising of 1715. So I have an interest in going there too.
