Maggiemahone1, let's talk "red eye gravy" and Southern Cooking. For instance if my doctor told me that I could not have Southern Friend Chicken anymore I would find a new doctor. If you live in the South like me you know Southern Cooking. As for "Red Eye Gravy" it is easy to fix. First pan fry some cured ham. If cured ham is not available then pan fry a ham steak. Make sure the ham gets a partial crispy coating on each side. You are looking for the pan particles which the fried ham leaves in the skillet. Now I use a black cast iron frying pan. With strong black coffee you scrap the the bottom of the frying pan to remove and dissolve the particles stuck to the frying pan. The gravy will be thin. Wow!! The flavor from the cured ham and the taste of strong black coffee blend to give you that special "Red Eye gravy" It is good on grits and biscuit. You will have to do trial and error to find the taste and consistency that your family will enjoy. Hope this helps.
thanks coastman for your recipe..I'm gonna fix red eye gravy this weekend, along with homemade buttermilk biscuits. I'll let you know how it turns out...
I'm browsing around in the forum and drinking a glass of red wine to unwind from the day at work. All my family is in bed and this time is for ME time...
Maggiemahone1, I see you have the The Breast Cancer Ribbon displayed on your post. We have been breast cancer free for 11 years. We just returned from the breast cancer center in Savannah late yesterday. We have a spot on a mammogram. We go in for a needle biopsy next Thursday Nov. 9th. Just keep us in your prayers. B)
