The Norwegian Metrological Institute has received hundreds of phonecalls from confused observers but so far has been unable to identify its origin.

Some experts have speculated that the phenomenon might have been caused by a Russian rocket launch. However, the Russian embassy insists such claims are completely unfounded.

Neither meteorologists, astronomers, or the Armed Forces have offered a solution to the matter.

The light was captured by amateur photographer Jan Petter Jorgensen while he was on his way to work at a salmon factory.

"The light appeared for 2-3 minutes. I could not believe my eyes, and got the shivers and was quite shaken by it", Mr Jorgensen said.

Strange light in Norwegian sky sparks mystery

Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? What do you think it is? Did someone inadvertently open a dimensional portal?

There appears to be a light source near the "point" of the blue trail which would indicate something in the atmosphere might be using that light in producing what the image shows. The sphere with light around it probably is an eclipse and also contributes.

Just guessing.

UPDATED: This unique photo taken in Northern Norway shows a Russian intercontinental missile flying into a spiral before it exploded in the atmosphare early Wednesday morning. The missile was most likely yet another failed test launch of a Bulava missile from the Typhoon submarine "Dmitri Donskoy" in the White Sea area.

I saw pictures on several web sites which portrayed the sphere in the picture quite differently. As a bright ball of light, not a sphere with a light ring around it.

This one would support the idea of a missile. The other was strange in that it appeared to depict several things.

You are right! If I would have seen that, I would have been looking for my rosary beads!
